“Choosing a theme of Yankee exceptionalism”

‘Yankee Exceptionalism’ rather than “American exceptionalism”... Can you guess where this is going?

It’s easy enough to figure out if you know of Larry Schweikart’s bizarre claim that the 19th century American South was filled with Marxists. A claim which stands history on its head since the actual Marxists of that era, the ‘48ers, had settled in the North just prior to the Civil War and were enthusiastic supporters of the Radical Republican cause that led to civil war. Having failed in their attempt at revolution in Europe they fled and brought their progressive army to America. Today’s Progressives in Wisconsin and other points north are the descendents of those 48ers.

By the mid 1850s Yankee culture had left its Protestant roots far behind, embracing Transcendentalism, Unitarianism, and the gnostic heresies boiling out of the Burned-over District. A secularized social gospel appealed to them. And so no longer believing in the faith of their fathers they instead believed that they could immanentize the eschaton, bring about heaven on Earth through politics. The murderous John Brown was heralded as their substitute John the Baptist, leading the way for their political Christ. And as with other secular heresies of this sort it quickly led to killing on a vast scale.

Yankee Exceptionalism is certainly at work even to this day. It just doesn’t happen to have much in common with the America of the founding era.

the pitfalls of viewing American history always with a glint of the prism of racial injustice somewhere casting a shadow over it all

it's like organic constitutionalism with a ladle of racial justice gravy on top like hot fudge on a sundae

it can blots out the vanilla ice cream

Beck does this big time...to the point of adoring folks who only get a pass for being black or dead and praising legislation that is anything but conservative from the 1960s

Rush does it too...Levin..barely..he is a Lincoln worshiper but isn't completely stupid about the social engineering of the 1960s

the conservatism of Reagan, Goldwater and Buckley...the one we grew up with...is largely dead

On the opposite side we have this charictature of politically correct history which is basically one big fantasy of minority grievance

and on our side we simply have something more tempered but still obliging over race

these sentiments are bad enough in their effect on our own governance but also paralyze us in dealing with foreign threats that involve mostly brown people and what is to us a minority religion

the political correctness about anything minority here has it's birth in the over compensation to blacks and the ignoring of certain realities to accommodate them

“Beck does this big time...to the point of adoring folks who only get a pass for being black or dead and praising legislation that is anything but conservative from the 1960s”

When you have 1960’s Civil Rights liberalism being repackaged as ‘conservatism’ that’s what you can expect. From what I’ve read Larry Schweikart is someone Beck uses as a source.

How old is Glenn Beck? I’m certain that he’s too young to know the Kennedy and Johnson years firsthand. I was a teenager living in Washington DC and remember it all very well.

Conservatives of that era would be anathema to their current namesakes who have fed on political correctness more than they know. If you were to offer Beck and his like the words of Lyndon Johnson and Hubert Humphrey I’m sure that they would hail them for their enlightened ‘conservatism’. Whereas the words of Goldwater, Reagan, and Buckley circa 1964 would get them denounced as ‘racists’.

There is little appreciation for limited government anymore. Barry Goldwater opposed the Civil Rights bills. He did not believe that national politicians and their judicial enablers had the right to interfere in the lives of American citizens, no matter how unenlightened they believed those citizens to be. The freedom of the un-progressive American to his life as he wished just couldn’t be allowed to continue.

Conservatives who praise the Civil Rights bills really have no ground for objecting to the social engineering that the Left continues to push on the American people. The ‘right’ for progressive elites to use the power of the national government to remold American culture is in those bills.

What American history has been is the progressive centralization of power into the national government. The States Rights championed by Madison and Jefferson in the Virginia and Kentucky Resolves of 1798 died when Lincoln turned the simmering sectional conflict into total war. 100 years later the right of American citizens to live their own unenlightened, anti-Progressive lives came to an end in the Great Society legislation.

So does ‘gay marriage’ violate your religious beliefs? Well get used to it, because I can’t see any way that it will be stopped. It’s one more of the ever expanding civil ‘rights’ that politicians and the judiciary now have the power to impose on you. There will be other “rights” following that one. I don’t know what they will be, but I suspect that they will involve Sharia law.
