Wonder what she thinks of Polish cuisine.
i luv Nigella! she is beautiful and she loves food! good food... yummy food! and so do i!
She prefers “even English cuisine”? I thought that was an oxymoron. I have yet to find anyone with live taste buds who prefers English cuisine to, well, any other cuisine! The French are obnoxious, but they sure know cooking. Heck, if you buy an ordinary random sandwich in Paris, it just might be the most delicious sandwich you ever had!
Anyone who knows French cuisine well knows that modern French cuisine came from the work of August Escoffier, who's work on codifying French cuisine is well-known. Unfortunately, Escoffier's most important work, Le Guide culinaire, has a very extensive emphasis on sauces and less on the natural taste of food you get from other cuisines.
Me too. I prefer simple foods that haven’t been overcooked. Some Asian cuisines seem to have more nutrition; they eat more veggies.
The only unhealthier cusine must be Czech (ooodles of meat) and perhaps Ukrainian :)
But Polish cuisine is looked down upon even in Poland -- here in Warsaw the most popular to me seem to be Sushi joints :)
French sandwiches -- I'd agree with you except that it's also true of food in Italy.
The English have some great vindaloos and biryanis.
Nigella’s my favorite tv cook. I recommend her cookbooks as well. She really can cook. And she’s dropdead gorgeous.
I’ll take simple, straightforward Northern Italian and French Provence-style cooking over the stereotypical heavily-sauced Parisian style any day.
There’s a great Bourdain line in the No Reservations episode in Venice where he says something along the lines of “the key to great Italian cooking is to start with great ingredients and try not to screw them up”, and I couldn’t agree more.
The best English food is typically foreign. At least based on my limited stay in London.
English food has really changed over the last 20-30 years. They have great restaurants, great supermarkets, excellent outdoor markets. At Christmas time I order all of their great items: Christmas Cake from Bettys of York, mince pies, Fortnum & Mason’s relishes, sauces and chutneys, Turkish Delight. And wonderful dishes like Toad in a Hole, Bubble & Squeak, sausage and mash, Eton Mess, Sticky Toffee Pudding, Queen of Puddings. Oh my, gotta get out my Nigella cookbooks...
My great-uncle said, “You go to Italy for the history, the people, and the food. You go to Ireland for the history and the people. You go to England for the history.”
English cuisine is actually extremely good. It has a bad rep because most people have never been exposed to the real thing (for a variety of reasons unconnected with the food itself).
Thats probably because you wouldn’t be able to find much English food in London. The best English food is always found in people’s homes, never in restaurants.
You h ave nailed it for all eternity. Northern Italian is indeed underappreciated.
A friend of mine used to cook it for dinner most nights and eating at her place was an experience that I will never forget. I used to hang out there for about a decade and a half.
What was my favorite? Tomorrow’s dinner, what will it be?
As a casual European traveller, from best to worst:
German- not what we would call that style but the attention to quality and detail in the prep/presentation across the menu.
France - yes the baked goods are the best in Europe, and very good quality elsewhere on the menu.
Italy/Spain -you have to eat at the most expensive restaurants to get quality.
England - stick with offshore styles like Thai, Asian Fusion. I ordered pork pie at a pub once. It was Spam within a pie crust, and cold.
Don’t forget the Fish & Chips!
