Winter comes early in Hawaii with arrival of 50-foot surf
GrindTV ^ | October 10, 2012 | Chris Mauro

While skiers and snowboarders are waiting breathlessly for a new winter to arrive, those who get to feel it first are actually surfers in Hawaii, and if you ask them, they'll be the first to tell you winter arrived with a bang on Tuesday, as 50-foot swells generated from the first north Pacific storm of the season slammed the north shore of Maui.

Drat! We just visited Maui & missed the big waves. And I lived on Oahu for 6 years. Whenever I got over to the North Shore, or Waimea Bay, it looked like a wading pool for kiddies - no waves. Just my luck...

The waves probably are big, but we suffer from the volcanic dust for several days already.

We visited Pearl Harbor for a day and then flew over to the Big Island to see the volcano. Dust and SO2 was so bad that a park ranger came out of the bookstore, wearing a gas mask and ordered all of us inside.

Wow! We visited the Big Island several years ago & went to see the volcano. Things were quiet then.

When we were on Oahu, we took a day tour of Pearl Harbor including the Arizona Memorial & the Mighty Mo. Those guns are still intimidating!

In downtown Honolulu and on the beach near our hotel, large numbers of young people sat under the trees, looking out at the ocean, doing nothing.
I’d like to qualify for one of these gigs...

I used to want to be a beach bum. I ended up with a husband, 2 kids, and have been a business owner my entire adult life. Now I’m thinking about the beach bum gig again...

Well, hopefully after January 20, 2013 Obama will be just a “beach” bum. Of course he will “retire” to Oahu with an expensive beach house that taxpayers will be funding on his presidential salary!

Winters almost here. Six inches of snow fell here in the High Sierra of California on Thursday.

Alki Beach in Seattle would work for me.
I’d be close to Duke’s Clam Chowder Emporium.

Alki is very cool ..so much like California when the weather is good. And agree about Dukes!

I’m hoping that one of these days that the rats have done all the damage they can do to California and it will flip back to normal and be safe to go back there...if I can live that long. I have relatives there who are doing fine.

Don't worry about not getting to the North Shore when the surf was up. We lived on Oahu for 4 years too, but knew the area up there became a jammed parking lot when the surf was up, so just avoided it then.

Swell is up a bit here on the Kona coast, caused some issues on the swim leg of the Ironman today for some. Helluva race again, luckily saw it streaming on the net. We can see the turn around of the swim, and it is an awsome sight, all those people in the water at once. Called the "Blender" for good reason. The pros do the whole thing in just a bit over 8 hours. Incredible.
