Alex Rodriguez and Robinson Cano are using these playoffs to make a powerful case for avoiding a mega-long-term commitment to Cano.
Rodriguez is just now at the halfway mark of his 10-year, $275 million contract and to say he looks helpless against righties is an insult to the helpless. The Yankees don’t want to see five more minutes of this, much less five more years. He is the cautionary tale about erosion during the life of an extended deal.
Cano is supposed to be the logical heir to A-Rod as both middle-of-the-order thunder and top-of-the-pay-scale wage earner. Brian Cashman had even hinted during the season about breaking Yankees’ policy and trying to sign Cano long term before he actually reaches free agency after 2013.
But the Yankees will have pause now with Cano and also Curtis Granderson. Plus, if there was even a lingering thought of retaining free-agent-to-be Nick Swisher, that has probably evaporated, too, in yet another postseason to forget.
The foursome has been so woeful that Raul Ibanez and Russell Martin were Joe Girardi’s choices to bat 4-5 yesterday in ALCS Game 2. Still, within that failing heavyweight quartet, the biggest responsibility belongs to Cano.

agent—how did that work out in the ratio of wins to millions? But...they kept him away from signing with the Yankees!

—This Yankee lineup in 2012 is the worst hitting team in Yankee history by far. These foul foursome of idiots that is Cano, ARod, Granderson and Swisher deserve a ticket out of NY, it is shameful to see these idiots wearing the pinstripe uniform that has been honored with some of the best players in the past 40 years. This team needs to be broken up and reconstructed with hard nose players not all of these primadonna basters. —The Red Sox were lucky to get rid of their$275 million dollar boat anchors..Not so the Yankees. After what A-Rod stuck them with, one would think they would never offer long term contracts again...Look at the Angels after signing Pujos, the Phillies...it goes on and on with guys sitting back after looting the cookie jar.

Who's that swinging and missing again? It's Robbie Cano, didn't ya know! Maybe they're OK in the reg. season, but postseason? The Grandy-Man is 3 for 25.. A goose egg in the run column for the Yanks at home. Must have really been fun for the fans who paid big $$ for seats. On Sat., the park quickly emptied in the late innings...there was the comeback though, but they lost in extra innings.
It was so...quiet.
They’ll face the National League strike out leaders this week in Detroit with Verlander and Scherzer.
I think most of us Tiger fans would be happy to see Granderson back in Detroit if the price was right.

Cano makes good money, but every team in MLB would take him with his salary. His salary isn’t in the top 25 but he’s certainly a top 25 player.
Granderson makes about average money for a starting outfielder. Maybe worth it, maybe not, depending on the team.
A-Roid’s contract was always stupid.
He killed it in 2009 when they won the World Series. Other than that year, no.
They - the Yankees - beat my Orioles so yes I will enjoy them getting knocked out by the Tigers. You see, Detroit has something the Os and Yankees do not: Justin Verlander!
Reggie called out one of those suckers during the season and was bared from the team activities thereafter. I guess they cannot handle the truth. The truth is some guys are money players, like Jackson and his antagonist Martin were, and some are not like A Roid, Cano, Swisher (perfectly named) and a few others.
The Yanks are done, not just for this season but it is looking like a return to the period following 64 when they were old, broken down and had nothing in the farm system to bring up. Both the Red Sucks and the Yanks have fallen from the upper tier and will be missing for a while as they try to rebuild the dynasties again.
No buy-out clause in there? Maybe he still has value as a situational hitter, but that's an awful lot to play for a role-player.

It’ll take ten years to come back from this fiasco of a team. It’s a slow motion train wreck and we’ve seen this coming for the past few years. Great regular season, post-season collapse and their inability to get as much as a hit against slightly above average pitching with runners on base is legendary. They slowly became too comfortable and it’s biting them in the ass.
As a fan of the game, the Baltimore, Detroit match-up might have been a better series just because of the statistical over-performance of the Orioles and the under-performance of the Tigers.
Meh. On to football.
For the ML minimum, he could beat out Berry or Bosch for a job on this team. That's it.
Folks do know that the ownership of the Red Sox are RABID leftists, who, back in 2004, offered their personal jet(s) to John Kerry for a potential recount in OH, amongst other things, right?
OTOH, the Yankess were/are owned by Republicans, specifically, George Steinbrenner, who was a big time GOP backer. The president of the Yankees, Randy Levine, I believe has $upported and endorsed Scott Brown.
While I root for a few (very, after this past season) players on the Red Sox, I won't $upport them. I will never pay to go to a Red Sox game nor pay for NESN as part of my cable package...starve the beast.
