A 15-year-old Alabama boy is in critical condition today after he was shot in the head by a friend during prank that police said went terribly wrong.

Jesse Rainey, 15, and seven male friends were spending the weekend at an unoccupied home that belonged to the grandmother of one of the boys, when a few of the teens decided to prank their friends by faking a home intrusion, Colbert County Sheriff Ronnie May told ABCNews.com.

“One of the young men cut the lights to the house, then a few of the other guys snuck back inside, wanting their friends to believe there was an intruder,” May said.

The teens were in the process of using flashlights to find the switch box, when Rainey jumped out of a closet.

His rattled friend immediately dropped a video game and fired a shot into Rainey’s head with a .38 caliber hand gun.

Being a dumbass sometimes hurts a lot, but I hope the kid is okay.

Sorry for what happened but there are some pranks that are destined to go terribly wrong.

BTW, what was the kid doing carrying a handgun to check the circuit breaker panel? Was he doing it for protection (hard to believe that 8 healthy teenage boys would need a gun at granma’s house)? Or more likely was he farting around and carrying the gun too impress his friends.

Maybe it's just the cynic in me, but I'm thinkin’ this story's gonna fall apart.

“Well, officer, there I was, in the middle of a pitch dark house. I was walking with a video game in my hand, and my pistol — securely holstered, of course. Suddenly, I heard a sound — like a burglar jumping out of closet — I turned, dropped to one knee, drew my gun, and sent my first shot directly into the head of the shadowy figure on the other side of the darkened room. All I can say is, I’m glad I’ve been spending so much time at the range. Anyway, I sure was shocked when the lights came on and I found out that I had shot my dear friend Timmy. And by the way, officer, those rumors that Timmy has been seeing my best girl are completely untrue. He was a dear friend and he would never do such a thing to me. Anymore.”

Stupid kids and a story that makes little sense. I think your instincts are accurate. Cover story will probably crumble.

Regardless of what actually transpired, in the case of the brain injured person (and the rest of the merry band of ‘pranksters), said brain was arguably not being used anyway.

I guess we cynics unite.

There is little I would put past a group of stoned or drunk teen aged boys involving “stupid pranks”, but the article clearly states no drugs or alcohol were involved.

It's really not quite adding up right, yet. IMHO.

This seems fishy, but then again, it could have been a "lucky" shot. But then again, maybe there's more to the eye here.

Hmmm... what's the over/under this fall on the number of stories of hunters not watching where they're swinging their shotty and popping their buddy hunters getting a collection of bird shot freckles because 'the dog stepped on the trigger?'

“still trying to figure out why he was carrying a handgun and a video game.”

Video game was his impromptu flashlight.

I hope the boy will be OK. The other boys did the right thing by calling 911 and rushing him to an emergency crew.

But... yeah, the story does sound suspicious. Then again, it sounds so suspicious that maybe it really is the truth.

I apologize in advance.

I was coming out of the store just after midnight headed for my Jeep when a kid jumped from behind the dumpster with a paintball gun. He damned near died right there.

He and his friends had no idea that playing war games in a business district wasn't a good idea.
