OXNARD (CBSLA.com) Police in Ventura County are investigating an officer-involved shooting that may have claimed the life of a young man returning from a run.
Family members of Alfonso Limon, 21, say he was an innocent victim who got caught in the crossfire between Oxnard police and two pursuit suspects Saturday night.
The shooting occurred around 10:15 p.m. when a vehicle carrying three men led Oxnard police on a brief pursuit following a routine traffic stop, Ventura County Sheriffs investigators said.
Two of the three suspects bailed from the vehicle on foot and engaged in a shootout with police.
Suspect Jose Zepeda, 24, and Limon, both of Oxnard, were killed in the shootout, authorities said.
The other foot chase suspect suffered a non-life threatening gunshot wound. A third was arrested after surrendering to police.
He was coming home from a run at Pacifica High School with my other brother, and they were walking home and they encountered the pursuit and they were caught in the middle of everything and my brother was killed, Limons sister, Rebecca, said.
Authorities are awaiting the results of an autopsy to determine if Limon was fatally shot by police or the suspects.
The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave, officials said.
The shooting is being investigated by the Ventura County Sheriffs Office, the Ventura County District Attorneys Office and the Oxnard Police Department.
Authorities will hold a 10 a.m. news conference where they are expected to release additional details.
Hopefully the criminals being pursued will be charged with murder under the Felony Murder Rule.
Agreed.
Three fatal shootings occur when a vehicle flees from “a routine traffic stop.” I hope there is more to it than that.
Oxnard, known as “Snard” to most in Ventura county, is a cesspool of mexican gangs. Good chance the cops knew they were following gang-bangers.
The police are not your friends, particularly during a chase or a shootout. Crime scenes are not safe zones, and gunfights are not a spectator sport.
Summation: When cops with drawn guns appear, hit the ground. Think cover. DOUBLE DOWN ON THE ABOVE WHEN BULLETS ARE FLYING.
And especially on that side of the tracks. There are a lot of newer home developments and strip malls around Pacifica High, but that side of town is more known for the Hispanics, and gangs. “Back in the day”, that particular area was all agricultural land; and further to the west was “the barrio”, or what we called La Colonia. You did not want to be on that side of town at night.
I had forgotten about La Colonia. Been away from Ventura area for years now. Did see a lot of the gentrification starting back then along Pleasant Valley Rd when heading down to the harbor.
Ah, was thinking of Ch. Islands Bl. Used to get screwed up down there with that jog I had to take. No quick way in, had to go through the barrio or way up north to Victoria and back down south.
