Millions to take part in largest ever-earthquake drill

Families from Los Angeles to New York will dive for cover at 10.18am in each timezone as they rehearse what to do in the event of a major quake.

Local radio stations will simulate news announcers warning that a 7.8 magnitude earthquake is about to strike, while ominous rumblings will play in the background.

The en masse rehearsal is being coordinated by Shakeout, a Californian group set up to encourage awareness among people living on the San Andreas fault, a tectonic fault line that runs along the West Coast.

Major earthquakes are expected to strike the same area every 150 years but it has been nearly 300 years since southern California has been hit, prompting fears of a long-overdue quake.

Lance Webster, one of the drill organisers, told the Daily Telegraph: "The natural tendency of people who live in risk areas is to downplay the danger or ignore it. The goal of this is not to frighten people but to give them positive things they can do to prepare and survive."

As well as practicing what to do during the initial tremors, Mr Webster said people should prepare emergency supplies of water in anticipation that a major earthquake would disrupt water pipes and road links.

More than half of the 9 million Californians due to take part are students, as schools and universities along the West Coast practice their safety procedures.

Oh...good reminder. Thanks. [Note to self: pray periodically for the big one to happen soon and take out all of the trash.]

“Ominous rumblings will play in the background.” Beano can help you with that.

I’m prepping for the “earthquake” when millions of liberals bang their heads on walls simultaneously on Nov 2 when Odumbo loses..

You just know that somebody’s not going to get the word that this is a drill.
“Yep, Governor Brown, I’ve worked for you for several years and I’ve never liked you! So here’s some pee on your desk to wash away your stupid ideas! Here, I’ll write my name on your carpet! What? It’s a drill? Ooooooohhhhh...l.took too much medicine. Where am I?”

Aw, you’re welcome. But I’m an equal opportunity hell wisher. There’s also the economic collapse, increasing likelihoods of nuclear exchanges and much more. Oh, and I’m on the Rockies. We have the extended minimum, ice age, or whatever kind of fun that’ll be.

max americana, millions, yes. And that’s something to look forward to. Too bad, though, that it won’t be more than about half of the socialist liberals banging their heads either way. ;-)

"Families from Los Angeles to New York will dive for cover at 10.18am in each timezone"

Dive? dive? really?

Why is NY involved in this experiment? I'm not worried about a 7.8 earthquake. "Diving" anywhere won't protect me. I'm more concerned about the 100 year flood in this area. We've had five of them since 1996, which makes me over 500 years old. Now, if the earthquake and flood happen simultaneously, I'll dive.

Silly me, I should read more carefully. It says "families". I get to sit out this experiment. LOL

I think there is a Democratic congressman who will warn against this drill. According to him, if all the people rush out, LA may tip over and fall into the sea. If if could happen to Guam, I’m sure it could happen to LA since it is closer. Hey, it’s not me, it’s one of those intellectual Democrats.

We had an earthquake here in New England at 7:10pm last night. Not a big one 4.6 but for us it was big as we do not normally get them.

"According to him, if all the people rush out, LA may tip over and fall into the sea."

LOL. Last summer I was working on my roof. Decided to take a break. As I entered my house it shook. "Oh come on, I don't weigh THAT much!" I said to the house. As I walked into my library, I saw the dog in the doorway. That's when I realized it was an earthquake.

Here's a thought. If millions dive at the same time, won't that cause an earthquake?

Hey, wasn't there some crazy experiment a few decades ago that everyone had to jump at a certain time?

May JR be perched on his own safe island, after the rest of Cali slides away. ;-)

Kart, for years I’ve read about California people keeping their earthquake preps close to their door - they are the most prepared state for an emergency. The two emergency backpacks I have came from a California company who makes them mainly for California folks.

When an earthquake hits, the first thing to do is grab the backpacks and leave the house immediately and go to a space without buildings around.

The backpacks I got from there are designed to give a person cover, such as tarps with rope attached to each corner so they can have a covered space, space blankets, and separate packs of individual use water for three days, and a long list of everything they would need for that three days including food and first aid - my backpacks have everything I would need to stay out in the open if need be. That California company makes the best prepared backpacks.

I clicked on this article and there is a picture of people under flimsy desks. In reality, people are told not to do that. A desk will collapse and you will be squished dead. Get outside and if that is impossible, stand in a doorway as that is the strongest place to avoid being squished by falling/collapsing objects.

Here in hurricane land, we prepare our houses - in California, they leave the house immediately with survival gear. If their car survives, that may be their house for days.

Someone mentioned Jim Robinson living in California - he’s going to end up in Texas one of these days. I hope he gets out before the “big one”.

Did anyone hear how the big toilet flush in Italy (?) came out the other day?

We’ve also had more than our far share of 100 year floods. Ok, so the earthquake takes out the dam up stream and knowing the perfect swan dive might come in handy. There’s only one way outta here and most other places around here, so I’d need enough advance warning (not likely) to get the heck outta Dodge. If not, then there’s no amount of practice drills that’ll save many souls. BTW, the life of most dams are 50 years... we’re past that.

Think I’ll pass. Did the live duck and cover 23 years ago today during Loma Prieta, I know how to react.

Besides, the arthritis in the knee has been acting up lately, so getting down will be easy. Getting back up, probably not so much.

I don’t know about Italy, but a month ago a synchronized toilet flush was scheduled in Zimbabwe.
