I’m not putting down preppers. In fact, we know where you are and we will be coming to your place with the useful items we have.

There's almost always someone like you on these threads. I assume your defense is that you were "only joking".

But if you were NOT joking, here's what your statement implies:

1. You are willing to take what I have by force. We know that, and we're ready for you to try.

2. Beneath your thin veneer of civilization, you are willing to kill and steal. Is that really the person you want to be?

My front door is metal. It was put on this house when it was built in 1983 - that could mean it’s a stronger metal than metal doors made today. I’ve examined the door as well as I can, and it appears to be two metal sheets, each 1/4 inch thick, and I suppose there is blank space between the two sheets.

My question is, what caliber bullet would it take to go through that door? Would a 38 hollow point do it, or would it take a larger caliber to do it? Since I’m on the inside, I’d like to know what someone outside would have to shoot to go through the door where I would be standing.

I’m sure some of you gun guys know the answer to this question.

“If your neighbor breaks in to your house to steal your food for his children, will you shoot him?”

Yes.

I have some canned meats, but will check that site out and order from them.

Many, many thanks for the tip!

You must have some stout hinges on that door. If it really is 2x 1/4” plates, then it’s going to weigh about 350 lbs if it’s a standard 30” door, and over 400 if it’s a 36.

I certainly hope your version of the SHTF is the right one. If so, we’ll come out of this just fine.

The key to your scenario it that government will eventually ride to the rescue. How? Like with Katrina, only nationwide?

I hope you are right, but I think you’ve underestimated a key variable: What happens if the power goes off, nationwide, for any extended period of time?

With no power, how long will it take for the cities to run out of water? What happens when millions of people have no water?

With no power, how long will it take for the distribution of gasoline and food to cease?

With no gasoline or food, and chaos in the cities and surrounding areas, who will restore the power?

With no gasoline, food, or power, what happens to that year’s crops?

The longer the power is off the more difficult it will be to turn back on.
.
.
SIDE NOTE: If power is off for an extended period we will see many civilized people turn into animals. We even have a poster on this thread who says that is what he plans to become. The animals will eventually be weeded out, and society will be better off without them. But how much damage will they do before they are gone?

It's not 1/4" plate, I'm fairly sure. It's a piece of steel over a wood core.

Any rifle round will go through it. Some pistol rounds will.

True story. I had a '73 Lincoln Continental Mk VI, lovely old blue boat, you could land an aircraft on the hood of the thing.

I drove the hell out of it for years until I turned a piston sideways in the 460 dumptruck motor under the hood. I made it home with the bottom of the oil pan completely gone, and parked it out in the back acre. It never moved again.

It became the target/backstop for light arms practice.

At point blank, the heavy .45 pistol rounds would not penetrate the door. They rocked the old boat, but they didn't enter the passenger compartment.

A .22 rifle round would easily pass through the door and usually got stuck in the far door from a range of 50 meters.

This is just another Y2K scare that never happened.

Don’t fall for it.

Save you money.

I would like to think you are right, but I don’t think the debt incurred by our irresponsible government can be sustained. There will be a tipping point. How bad it gets is anyones guess.

JRandomFreeper ~ still no running hot water, since 2008

Born to Conserve ~ Do you have internet access?

Kartographer ~ Here's your sign.

It's a fair question. He FReeps, but he doesn't have running hot water???

That would be as ridiculous as spending money on internet access, yet being too poor to have a bathtub.

(pause) oh wait. *blush* (pause again) I don't have a bathtub.

*nevermind*

“Any rifle round will go through it. Some pistol rounds will.”

There is a metal piece on both sides of the door.

A zombie would likely have a hand gun rather than a rifle. To be safe, then, I shouldn’t stand in front of the door. There is a door to the laundry room immediately inside that door, so I could stand in that doorway and be out of the line of fire if someone shot at the door.

This has been bugging me for some time - was it safe to stand in front of that door if someone knows I’m there and shoots at the door. The answer is, from what you say, I’d better not stand there.

Even if there is no shtf moment a person could save a lot of money by prepping just because the prices of food are going up so fast.

I don't pay for internet access. I barter for it. Laptop I'm on is old equipment that was part of the equipment I repo'ed for the leasing company and took in lieu of pay, when the leasing company ran short of cash to pay me.

I am NOT paying $250 bucks for a water heater right now. Maybe next year. I get by just fine without it. Running hot water is nice to have, not need to have.

I've lived at the edge of disaster since 2008. You develop skills to cope. ;)

I think the mormons do a pretty good job of preparing for this level of unpleasantries. And it doesn’t become an all-consuming task. So, why re-invent the wheel? They’ve already given it a great deal of thought.

I think a Mormon president would be a good influence on the country in this, even if no other, regard.

I understand that lower-level government will be completely gone. Family first. What I was saying is that the federal government has prepared for a SHTF situation for a long time. They are prepared to sustain the pinnacle of the government, and that’s something I don’t see any preppers really considering. Everyone seems to assume that every member of the armed forces, every legislator, and everyone in the executive branch is going shake hands and say “gentlemen, it’s been an honor,” before they all go home and tuck their handguns in their waistbands and light a cigar.

No one considers the possibility that the government will be around after the dust settles. It would probably speed recovery, too, depending on the political tide at the moment the SHTF. Liberals would try to grab guns and probably start a civil war, while conservatives might use armed citizens to help rebuild.

Prepping for the SHTF often seems to be a way of preparing to live as we live now instead of learning how people managed to live 200 years ago. It seems that instead of buying 30,000 boxes of Oreos, it might be wise to learn animal husbandry instead. Hippies and their organic farms are useful to learn from here, too. Maybe knowledge is the most important prep.

I prep for tornadoes and other bad weather, mainly. After 2008, I've used stored rations to overcome a very local and personal economic disaster.

Disasters come in all shapes and sizes. Sometimes, losing a job can be a personal disaster if you aren't prepared.

I save about 15% on average by buying in bulk when stuff is on sale. Up until about 40 years ago, many people went into the fall months with a large store of food put back.

I know that the tuna I have put back isn't going to get cheaper over the next year.

A quick, merciful death for your neighbor, or slow, agonizing starvation for you and your kids.

Tough call...

I woudn't stand there, but in my situation, I have a way to deal with those that approach the front door. Heck, I don't answer the front door today, I generally flank that area and see what the knockee wants. Scares the crap out of most of them. ;)
