Prehistoric 'Kennewick Man' Was All Beefcake
NPR.org ^ | 10-21-2012 | Anna King

For nearly a decade, scientists and Northwest tribes in Washington state fought bitterly over whether to bury or study the 9,500-year-old bones known as Kennewick Man. Scientists won the battle, and now, after years of careful examination, they're releasing some of their findings.

For starters, Kennewick Man was buff. I mean, really beefcake. So says Doug Owsley, head of physical anthropology at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History, and the man who led the study of the ancient remains.

Owsley can read the bones like we might read a book. He looks for ridge lines that indicate which muscles Kennewick Man used the most, and what he was doing with them. First off? He had muscular legs like a soccer player — likely from running, trudging and hunting....

Obviously Asian, and strangely, some people are really bothered by that. Get over it. American Indians do—well, at least those who aren’t steeped in the political correctness of our western states. Oh...and many oriental Asians freak on the fact, too. ...can’t accept that we part-barbarians might have come from their oh-so-civilized neighborhood.

I may be wrong but I think asian and american indians had very little facial hair. Although my brother in law, Scilian countn’t grow a beard or mustache. But had a great amount of hair on his head, thick and black and hard to get rid of bed head...he wore a silk stocking for a cap at night to keep his hair from getting too bed headdy....great guy, passed away in his 70’s without any grey hair..

“Jean Auel will be very upset.”

Johnny Cash would feel vindicated. “He pulled out a knife and cut off a piece of my ear ...”

I’m not entirely certain that the epicanthal folds and skin tone that has you saying “obviously Asian” isn’t just a fanciful, PC inclusion. DNA says otherwise. That’s why people are bothered.

On the one side, we have the claim of native tribes jeopardized. On the other, caucasians who have been somewhat embattled by diversity efforts over the past three or four decades find it more than a little ironic.

Must be some huge salmon if they can eat a seal.

You got me:) Wounded but not mortal:)

Since the seals seasonally follow the huge salmon up river, I’m guessing Ken followed the seals. Locals thought he was trying to set up a casino and stuck a spear in his hip.
The local indians harass white bow hunters to this day.
(The bows are not white)

Ken’s strong right arm was from pulling the one armed bandit. A second possibility is from throwing large spears at seals

Good one....P.S. I have been to Bonneville Dam and seen the seals and the salmon. I have also been below the locks in Oregon City— saw lots of seals and lots of salmon fishermen.

Reminds me of that unique Japanese aboriginal group - Okinawa? They look different from the other Japanese in facial hair and nose type. I was watching a youtube video on Okinawans and saw them moving through tidal waters to cast nets for fishing. Their stride was short and they had considerable resistance from the tide. Could that account for the leg muscles?

I think you're thinking of the Ainu (remnant on Hokkaido, not Okinawa).

Kennewick man was described as being Ainu-like years ago, by the anthropologist who first examined his remains.

Some of the photos are even reminiscent of Australian Aboriginies in the nose, etc.

Yeah, they just can’t take deivery of the idea that this guy was not European.

Nobody who’s studied him (including the original anthropologist who misidentified him) has called him european. There is no DNA and the physical features resemble most closely Asian populations like the Aniu, Jomon & Polynesians.
