Thursday, October 22, 1942 www.onwar.com

American artillery on Guadalcanal [photo at link]

In the Solomon Islands... On Guadalcanal, the Japanese attack again over the Matanikau River with a strong force of tanks and infantry. They are thrown back with heavy losses due mainly to the effectiveness of the American artillery.

On the Eastern Front... The first snows of winter fall at Stalingrad.

In New Guinea... Australian troops land on Goodenough Island. The Japanese have mostly left the island after the battle at after Milne Bay.

During the evening General Maruyama reaches his deployment line, 4 miles south of Henderson Field. He is actually 6 - 7 miles south. His division is strung out over approximately 18 miles of rain-soaked trails. Despite some serious doubts, the attack is scheduled by HQ 17th Army, at Kokumbona on the coast, for the 23rd (tomorrow). The Japanese plan an attack of two prongs from the mouth of the Matanikau early on the 23rd. Col. Oka and Col. Nakaguma will command these. That night the attack south of Henderson Field will have a right wing attack under General Kawaguchi (of Bloody Ridge), a left wing under General Nasu and the main attack under General Maruyama.

This is a big weekend for movie openings. “Flying Tigers” and “My Sister Eileen” also make their N.Y.C. debuts. We will have reviews for all three tomorrow.

If we can’t stay here alive, then let us stay here dead.

Well that's inspiring. Sounds like something from Monty Python.

The USS O'Brien had actually been torpedoed by a Japanese submarine back on September 15, during the same attack that sank the carrier Wasp and damaged the battleship North Carolina. She was given temporary repairs and was limping back to the West Coast when her keel suddenly split, resulting in severe flooding. The crew abandoned ship and she ripped in half and went down a short time later.

The USS Meredith was attempting to escort a fuel convoy to Guadalcanal when she was caught in open water by a full strike force from the Japanese carrier Zuikaku. Hit by at least fourteen bombs and seven torpedoes, she went down in minutes. Only seventy-three men survived the sinking and the ensuing shark attacks.

October 22, 1942:

"When news reports about the mass murder of Eastern European Jews first reached the United States, the American Jewish community was ill prepared to deal with the impending tragedy.
The lack of organizational cohesiveness and the disparate character of the American Jewish community prevented a unified response to the genocidal campaigns of the Nazis.

"The U.S. Jewish defense organization, known as the American Jewish Committee, used quiet diplomacy to deal with the Nazi onslaught.
As the crisis in Europe escalated, the committee joined with seven other organizations to form the Joint Emergency Committee on European Jewish Affairs.
This group submitted a rescue proposal to the Bermuda Conference and sponsored mass meetings to publicize the murder of European Jews.

"The creation of the American Jewish Conference in August 1943 was an attempt to promote Jewish unity and offer a unified response to the growing disaster in Europe.
The conference's focus on postwar Jewish policy, however, limited the group's efficacy.
