In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
velleity \vuh-LEE-i-tee\ , noun
1. Volition in its weakest form.
2. A mere wish, unaccompanied by an effort to obtain it.
Fortunately it did no more than stress, the better to mock if you like, an innate velleity.
-- Samuel Beckett, Molloy
My guess is that instead of being men of decision we are in reality men of velleity.
-- Thomas Merton, Conjectures of a Guilty Bystander
Have you come across the word velleity? A nice Thomistic ring to it. Volition at its lowest ebb. A small thing, a wish, a tendency. If you're low-willed, you see, you end up living in the shallowest turns and bends of your own preoccupations.
-- Don DeLillo, Underworld
Velleity stems from the Latin word velle which meant "to be willing." The suffix -ity is used for abstract nouns.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

WFB's attempt to emulate us ; ) No pushing at the door please!
Rise and shine!
Obama’s recently revealed 20 page “plan for recovery” could be construed as nothing but velleity since it offers nothing new and lots of full page pictures of the O.
mere velleity to repeal obamacare is not enough. Immediate action is necessary!
Obama can claim a Pyrrhic victory with his put down of horses and bayonets, but Romney's yare campaign is working hard to win. Marines were happy to pitch in with irrefragable proof they still use them. Let's hope Romney's enchiridion has a few more plays in it to close the deal.
What a joke that was. He didn’t dare put it out before the debate where Romney could debunk it. Desperation flop sweat is all it is.
In the face of the dire exigencies facing our Beloved Nation, the Kenyan-in-chief marshals nothing but sheer, unalloyed velleity.
Which is matched, in its turn, by Putin and his sur-velleity.
Wow. I heard a bunch of drivel about what he has said off the record as being awesome, so this is a surprise. All good for Romney so far. Who will they endorse?
“Perversion,” known to liberals as “gaiety”
Part of left’s homo-geneity
“We’re all just the same
No questions, no blame”
An agenda more than a velleity
Here’s hoping our arch rival brings only velleity to tonight’s big game. Playing the season finale against the arch rival on TV on Thursday night (only game in town), with a home playoff game on the line, on a day flirting with record high temperatures should make for a very crowded stadium.
The candidate was a man of velleity, to telleity a man of pride swelleity, of courage jellity, himself no selleity, all is good and welleity. Barber Shave.
bump and a ping request?
The absence of the merest velleity at enforcing the law, or protecting the sanctity of the election polls, is the legacy of this union-backed Racine judge. This is the outrage of the day, IMHO. The very idea that the (now exonerated) perp’s defense that the lady poll watcher was “not used to the language of the community” (swearing and threats at election workers) is unconscionable.
Crass tells. Obama trying to be cool? Just makes him look ghetto.
Was the geographical error where they said that the ad was bleeding into Western Ohio?....
Yes. We have a winner.
I'd say that if he gets that from a childs innocent words of encouragement........then Romney is doing a great job of HAUNTING Obozo's every waking minute and taking up a lot of space in his head.........and that puts a BIG smile on my face.
If you want to know what liberals are up to, see what they accuse others of.
imagine inauguration day when Obams has to hand the keys over to Romney, whom it’s already been said he despises. xshub was saying this AM, wouldn’t it be nice seeing MOOchelle’s fat behind put on a helicopter and sent out of Andrews AF base?
Sometimes this late, in the week, you start to think you're hallucinating...... when is the weekend going to get here........and where's that pot of coffee...d@mn it!!!
New student ping.
Unfortunately we're going to have trouble getting a clear shot of MEshell's But-tocks because O'dumbo's swollen head and flapping ears will be blocking the shot......
I've been wondering if the O'dumbo faithful White Hut minions will be removing all the 'R' keys from the computer keyboards and stealing the White House treasures as well?
I also hope Romney calls the British consulate in DC and asks to have the bust of Churchill back while apologizing for Obozo's horrible behavior......
already added the Mime ; )
Spelling and accuracy is just opinion says my editor.
xshub said that Romney would probably need to have the place checked for anthrax, O’s minions will sabotage everything.
I added you to my Wednesday Ping List.
We'll partying heavily here on November 7th while I'm getting my teeth polished by the Dentist.
I hope that’s not a euphemism. ;-)
I’m really surprised and pleased at Romney’s efforts in this election now that we’re headed to the wire. It’s a welcome sight after witnessing McCain’s lackluster velleity four years ago. Now if we can keep the momentum.
.......exterminated, bug bombed (the electrical kind), washed from top to bottom and sanitized too....but I don't think the presidential sink will have to be replaced this time.
But the Justice (Brothers) Department and State Department will have to be totally gutted and rebuild from scratch.
A+ for you. I have to go back and read yesterday’s thread. You do such a good job with it and I was out and about all day.
A for you. Are you able to go to the game?
Isn't that always the way it is with the Comrades at the Politbureau of the Democratic party? Lenin would be proud......So is Alinsky......
You’re cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs, you are. A for you!
I’m happy to oblige. Please add Loud Mime to your ping list.
Oh, absolutely. I’d go rain or shine, so this is going to be beautiful. My wife is picking up some Italian roast beef from the butcher shop in town for sandwiches for dinner tonight.
Unconscionable is right. A+ for you. You need to post that as a thread of its own to get more attention. Seriously.
A+ for you. Who even reads that rag?
Already posted, and I’ve pinged it to the Wisconsin list TWICE. Little response so far.
I thought intimidation at an election was a Federal offense. But, I guess that’s just for Presidential elections. It’s no wonder that Racine is the ONLY district in Wisconsin where the recall succeeded. (A Senator was recalled, but there were a lot of questions about the vote.)
A+ for you! C’mon PA, vote for America!
