'Mom, go upstairs. We're all liberals.'

Ouch. Monday night was the first time I heard my daughter apply that label to herself, and the word didn't please me. She and six friends/coworkers were about to watch the final Obama-Romney debate on the large-screen TV in our suburban basement.

These twenty-something kiddies were enjoying our hospitality because it was free. They're a company (founder, partners, contractors, trainee), part of the start-up trend whereby young persons hang out at coffee shops, staring into laptops, trying to start the next Foursquare or Fab and make a billion dollars. Until that happens, they can't afford things like airfare or hotels. So in order to attend a conference in the city near us, they had driven cross-country in a minivan and were staying at our house for four and a half days.

Up to this point, neither my husband nor I had said a word to them about politics or cultural norms in general. When they brought in large quantities of beer and liquor and stayed up late consuming it, we said nothing. We did not inquire about the marital status of the couple cohabiting in the main guest room. On Sunday, we went to church but did not try to recruit them to go with us. We were not merely nonjudgmental, but supportive, stocking up on groceries to meet their various dietary needs and keeping quiet while they occupied the kitchen, "co-working."

Tolerant I am. But being told to leave my own basement did not cut it.

Madame, with all due respect, I assume your name and your husbands or on your mortgage? The moment your daughter told you that I would have said, as my parents always made it plain to myself and my other siblings, “There’s the door!’’. “This is MY house, MY rules’’!

I might have said (but didn’t), “Obama’s economic policy is the reason you guys don’t have a real job!”

oh...there are plenty of other reasons...

I wouldn’t put up with that sh!t. This is what happens when parents let schools run by unions raise their children.

I have young adult children. My daughter lived at home during the summer back when she was still in college, and my son is living at home for the next few months until he departs for basic at Parris Island. Neither of them are anything but right-wingers, but if either had ever, ever accepted my hospitality and treated me that way, they’d be out on their ear within 24 hours. If that.

The reason this woman’s daughter behaves this way is because she allowed it. She has made herself a doormat. Her daughter is a liberal because Mom and Dad allowed her to be a taker. Imagine laundering the bath- and bed-linens of selfish young people like that—! I’m filled with disgust.

I never blame a dog for being a dog. I blame the master for not knowing how to train it.

Fortunately my daughter studied business in college. She’s no flaming conservative, but she could see through every lie Obama was spewing ...

The lady fought the good fight and I think she will be rewarded with her perseverance at some time in the future. With her daughter and perhaps with a few of the “house guests”.

A lot of young people go thru a liberal, idealistic stage in their lives. When they actually get in the real world it becomes evident to them what is real and what is not.

That's not supportive - that's pandering. Show 'em the door!

Daughter, go to your car, and take your friends with you. You’re leaving. Perhaps Obama will give you a place to stay, food to eat, and free bandwidth. . . .

What a nasty, impious daughter! I guess “liberals” don’t believe in honoring their mother and father.

Parental weakness when the kids were toddlers.

Too bad the clock can’t be turned back to give the parents another chance to pound the slobbers out of the little cherubs.

I would have asked them if they’d ever seen CHANGING PLACES with Eddie Murphy. Then I would have told them my favorite Eddie Murphy line in the movie was “Get the f... out!” And I would have kicked their butts to the street. And that includes the daughter.

I think that’s part of the problem in this country. Parents won’t make kids grow up. Why should they face reality when Mom lets them crash for free and cleans up after them. She’s teaching her daughter to be a liberal.

“This morning, the kids packed up the minivan and drove away. On the way out, three of them thanked me for our hospitality. The other four, including the anti-Romney tweeters, said nothing.”

Typical impolite, entitlement-feeling liberals!

The mistake she and her husband made was sending their daughter to a liberal college.

“Too bad the clock can’t be turned back to give the parents another chance to pound the slobbers out of the little cherubs.”

Parents can only do so much. Kids are mostly influenced by their friends in school, not their parents or the Sunday sermon. The most important thing parents can do is to send their kids to good schools where everyone is on board with moral values.

well said. my daughter is a true blue conservative...she became that at age 17 when she was working during her senior year of high school. She wasn’t earning all that much ( limited hours etc because of her student status) but the first thing she noticed was A) the amount of taxes withheld and B) the amount of union dues they withheld. She has hated the unions and big government ever since.

“I also felt defeated because my daughter has turned out to be liberal. Either she’s been that way for a while and hidden it from us, or else she’s given in to the left-wing culture that surrounds her in the blue-state city where she lives.

***

My OLDER brother is a bleeding heart idiot liberal. Never spoke with him unless it’s really, really necc. but I did greet him a happy birthday this year.

An excellent cautionary tale for what happens when you fail to instill conservatism in your kids from DAY ONE.

Here is another, far more disturbing cautionary tale of what happens when parents surrender their daughters to the evil, depraved culture: Porn Before Puberty? Film Explores Childhood, Parenting in Sex-Saturated Culture.

My kids are nasty, in their own particular skillsets, and certainly not pious, in an ecclesiastical sense, but they damn sure are polite and carry their own weight.

Nothing like having the DI let your youngest daughter get a phone call out so she can tell SSgt Dad that she 'scored expert with grenades and got to throw 2 live ones!'.

Training will tell.

I am polite to my (now adult) children, they are polite to me. 3/5ths of the grandkids are respectful and polite to grandpappy. All of them watch their mouths.
