In an effort to get residents to wake up and pay attention to Hurricane Sandy, the governor of Connecticut just said that Sandy might be as bad was the worst hurricane ever to hit New England--the hurricane of 1938.
The 1938 hurricane hit Long Island and then moved on to Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont, killing 600-800 people along the way.
The hurricane was so devastating that several shore communities simply disappeared, along with the people who lived in them. Providence, Newport, Hartford, and other cities were hit with severe flooding (see below). And the death toll was made worse because no hurricane warnings were issued: Forecasters expected the hurricane to turn east and proceed out to sea.

Providence, R.I.As the Wikipedia article below illustrates, the 1938 hurricane was similar in some ways to Sandy, but, so far, anyway, it was far more powerful (Category 5 versus Category 1). It also moved far more quickly, which increased the perceived speed of the winds on the eastern side of the hurricane. The center of Sandy is also projected to hit the Jersey Shore, not New England.

You said it, Moose. What makes this storm particularly troublesome is the storm surge and higher than usual high tide during the full moon. Here in New Jersey they’re evacuating the barrier islands along the entire length of the state — mainly because the 5-10 foot storm surge (and that doesn’t include the waves themselves) may be a record storm surge and will likely cover much of the Jersey Shore with several feet of water.
Some of you don’t get it. The major problem here isn’t the wind, it’s the flooding. I am in danger of losing my house.
The three houses next to me have no chance of surviving without at least very major damages. Depending on which end of the tide ranges being predicted I will have either no damage or major damage.
And then we have one idiot talking about the wrath of God. Unbelievable.

Same here. We live directly on a creek. Our deck is actually built over the creek. Our old house was built in 1813 and was a grist-mill so it has been time-tested.
I’m extra worried about this storm and have spent the last week prepping. We’re still repairing damage from last year’s battle with Irene & Lee! Still have many bridges and roads out in our area (upstate NY) from last year.
It’s gonna be an interesting few days. Stay safe.
There is a lot of problems with this storms. There will be thousands of trees down. With them the power will go down. People will be without power for a few days to over a week. It gets cold at night, and there is a potential to have a cold front come through in that time.
There is the ability to flood as you said.
Many people don’t understand that not ever storm needs to be as powerful as Hurricane Katrina to create a lot of destruction. Thankfully it won’t be that powerful. Hurricane Irene created a ton of flooding in Vermont, and even in Ct it took over 2 weeks to restore power in many areas. It was a massive “cluster”. Luckily for New England that was when it was still warm. They are not so lucky this time.
I know that. I lived in Va Beach for near 10 years. I also know the hurricanes over ocean don’t get much more powerful when the water is colder than over a warm source.
I’ll wait and see. Sandy passed by our coastal area in SC where we were warned to tie everything down, “be prepared for high winds”, heavy rains, local flooding, yada, yada. We saw some gray clouds pass over. Experienced dangerous wind gusts of 16 mph, and the birds still came to the bird feeder. And not ONE DROP of rain. Yeah, it was really epic here. My point is, there’s a storm and we know where it’s headed (for days now). But let’s pronounce it an epic storm of the millennium AFTER it happens. Give out real info not media hype. Nobody is believing this stuff anymore...and that could be the most dangerous part of this storm that is YET to happen.
Then you know wind isn’t the only danger.
