Word For The Day, October 30, 2012
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
the working of wonders or miracles; magic.
[172030; < Greek thaumatourgía. See thaumato-, -urgy ]
A little appropriate music for the day:
Christie is praising the big zero for doing his job. Let’s see if those words translate into something useful, like rapid clean-up and help getting power restored. It’s not thaumaturgy to do the right thing.
I’m not sure what role the POTUS has in getting power restored. It seems to me to be standard procedure for utilities in non-affected areas to send crews to affected areas. I’m assuming they have standard reciprocity agreements to do this.
and Only days until Christmas.
The vaunted Obama thaumaturgy failed to prevent the rising of the seas.
He can free up money for helpers to be compensated. Indiana sent 20 staffed ambulances to help with evacuations and Gov. Walker sent help as well. Three phone calls seem like a small response to me.
There will be lots of references to God’s thaumaturgy this morning. And then there will be reports of tragedy. I hope all in the path of Sandy are relatively unscathed.
They closed my grandson’s college at noon yesterday — SUNY Fredonia. He was wondering how he was going to eat, if they had a power failure. No thought to studying, of course.
I need to check with 3 of my kids — NY, VA, and SC.
As for me, Gov. Romney’s planned rally here last nigiht was canceled. We’ll soldier on. We’re ore concerned with nursing my precious dog who came down with Lyme disease SUDDENLY this past weekend. He looks a little better this AM, but I was afraid we were going to lose him this weekend.
I have dentist this AM for somem major work after the dog gets his meds and breakfast. Then I have to see my doctor for an extension of my handicap tags because my knees are not getting better. Life goes on. For now. And my mother complains that the staff of her elegant, cushy, assisted lilving home have “early Altzeimers” because they don’t respond to her requests fast enough. (They are all in their 20’s). Has it ever occurred to her that they have 80 other residents to coddle? She wants her typewriter ribbon replaced. Now.
Considering the “immensity” of the Category 1 storm, it’s still a thaumaturgy that more lives weren’t lost. My understanding so far is 3: a man in NJ crushed by a tree limb, the Captain of HMS Bounty who remains missing after she sank, and a crewman who also died. There may be more, but so far, this is all I have heard.
Osama bin Laden donates to Obama campaign.
I also heard a boy got killed by a tree branch and a man died while pruning some of his trees for the storm.
Much goings going on. Stay sane!
For the economy, Obama’s traumaturgy while he worshipped at the throne of Keynesian liturgy was instructive to the masses ... but not to his ever-so-literate ivory tower socialist theorists.
well of COURSE, i am sure there are a plethora of Muslim names from outside the US on his donor lists!
A young boy was out walking around the house in the storm and was hit by a falling tree limb. Died on the scene. Very sad.
Report from Richmond VA this AM. Public schools closed, but Catholic school in session. Daughter has to teach today and SIL has to stay home with the kids (long story as to why they are not in Catholic school any more). High winds and lots of leaves blowing around. Not much else happening.? Thaumaturgy?
no, actually its from some movie, and there was much fun with it on twitter yesterday as they put UFOs shooting from the sky next to Lady Liberty, as well as sharks coming up in front of her and the STAYPUFT man standing next to her. JonahNRO tweeted that the staypuft man was not to scale, and staypuft man tweeted back that he was actually much bigger and much NICER in person, LOL!
Spooky picture. That sort of brings to mind the image of God’s wrath on Obama. Sodom & Gomorrah.
One of our major suppliers is in Cape May. Luckily our most recent order has been shipped and is on the way. Hopefully UPS got out before the storm approached. There is no other place where we can get these special parts. We’ll be out of business without them.
i think it may actually BE from Independence day.
I heard 16 lost this morning. May they R.I.P. They won’t ever have to go to the dentist again, God Bless them.
That can't happen here, since the public schools provide transportation for all.
Really? People are idiots. I saw it on FB. Still represents the storm in American politics.
Hey... That's 16 appointments I 'handled' in the last 2 days that I can collect for... and they're not here to say they didn't. Thanks for the idea!!
“I’m hoping for a thaumaturgy on Election day giving us a Republican majority in the Senate.”
That too, of course, along with a landslide victory for Romney/Ryan and a super majority of real conservatives in the house for a bye-bye Bonehead.
In Obama’s view of Healthcare, political thaumaturgy trumps trauma surgery...
This thaumaturgy just might be how Ol’Renfro tells his wife to get ready for Thanksgiving: “Thaw muh turkey”, says Renfro.
Of course this thaumaturgy could mean magic too seeing that Renfro and his wife don’t ever, never eat feather meat of any kind. Then again...Maybe it was the chaw of Workman’s made him sound that way. Or Metalturgy like they teach in shop class. Or Mentalturgy....
My decendents, on me mums side, were here prior to the American Revolution from Ireland.....probably indentured servants or worse....don't know for sure. They landed in South Carolina and bounced back and forth between North and South Carolina for almost 100 years before heading west to Tennessee and then to Kentucky.
I was in Catholic elementary school when that changeover happened, early 60s I guess? My first few years we had Catholic school buses which transported us. Bc st James was in Armstrong co. The catholic bus took us to Paulton elementary across the Kisskiminetas River in westmoreland co.
September, with Obama’s surge, he
Led by magic, thaumaturgy
Now we see November nigh
And Romney’s riding pretty high
Perhaps that day I saw my clergy
Began the liberals funeral dirge, he
Told me I should kneel and pray
And now I do so every day
I pray that Mitt will win the race
And Barry’s minions taste disgrace
As we approach the final hour
“O” can’t abuse a Higher Power
A joke being circulated is that Obama is blaming the hurricane on a youtube video.
My apologies for my impudent remark about dentists. I survived the “debridment” this AM. Only 5 more appointments scheduled, although I’m going to have a different hygienist for the last 2. The one today stabbed me in the tongue.
Yes.... as we requested of her. She’s getting an extra $250 cash for that little favor.
Bright, sunny and 67 here-I almost feel guilty-
Obama’s precious snake oil
Just like lipstick on a sow
Wore right off after Bengazi
And will be of no use now-
The driveby media can call it
Thaumaturgy, if they wish-
But just after a hurricane
Crow is a pretty cold dish
The emperor just doesn’t care
There’s no electricity for you-
But he says get on the internet
To find out what’s best to do...
I was expecting you to refer to a favorite Doors tune-
“Riders on the storm
Riders on the storm
Into this house we’re born
Into this world we’re thrown
Like a dog without a bone
An actor out on loan
Riders on the storm”...
“Hey that tag of your’s...for real?”
Yup, for real. And some 24 ancestral relatives with same surname as mine fought in the Revolutionary War. One was with a detachment of Marblehead seamen from Glover’s Regiment who helped get Washington and troops across the Delaware for the Christmas Day attack on the Prussian troops at Trenton.
Two brothers came in the early 1600’s, one from Germany, one from France (some with my surname went to Germany from france during the Thirty Years War - explains how one came from Germany, one from France.
Of course we do.
Had a baby shower in the hometown with family on Sunday. My SIL (yeah, the lib one) was lamenting the fact that the “Water Celebration” was canceled due to rain and the upcoming storm. I had to ask her...she said it was an anti-fracking event. OMG I think the whole room rolled their eyes. No one engaged her further on the topic.
