I was watching poor souls sob out their sorrows to Gov. Christie on Fox. What the hell? Is he Oprah? I won't blame the criers for spilling their emotions on tv; maybe they didn't notice the cameras, thought it was the only way to talk to the Man (not that the have to), were overcome by emotion, or just don't know better. This is not even about bucking up and taking responsibility for overcoming misfortune. My question is why this is what we expect from politicians.
It's all propaganda, I realize. But does it have to take this particular form? As if their job is to play therapist for individual citizens whenever something bad happens. Why not send real Dr. Phil's, if nothing else.
I hear ya on the grandstanding part but cut the affected citizens some slack here. They just got walloped and their lives are in upheaval. At least Christie is on the ground with his suffering constituents.
You’re just seeing real life, people suffering. This was not scripted. No matter how many preparations, human effort is no match for a storm like this.
People along the Gulf Coast cried on Bush’s shoulders after Katrina, and he hugged and comforted them, too.
The people of New Jersey are hurting. Christie’s concern is appropriate, and he is doing his job to get what help he can for his state.
I take it you’ve never survived a natural disaster, have you? I cried after Andrew went through in 1991. And I was not nearly as affected as those 50 miles south of me.
They’re in shock and their emotions are raw.
Seeing their state’s Gov. there probably just caused them to break down, as they are so close to the edge.
I don’t think that’s as bad of a sign for our society as having millions of people believing the government owes them to take care of them from cradle to grave, just because they exist and not because they got wiped out in a storm, like these people.
What’s happened to Christie?
I can barely watch the guy without cringing.
Yeah, I get it, big storm, terrible damage.
So, roll up your sleeves, provide political leadership.
Has the National Guard been brought out, or are they in Afghanistan making sure the Taliban can run for office?
Just do not send Boehner, he’ll flood the place, again, with tears

If you’ve never lost everything, you can’t understand how these people feel. I have been there and I understand their loss of composure. When you’re in shock, you can’t always control your emotions. It would be nice if the media had the decency not to film their emotional breakdowns, but remember “Dirty Laundry”? They live for moments like this! My heart goes out to all those who have just lost everything, their homes, their clothes, their family photos, letters from deceased loved ones, etc. It will take years for them to recover.

If you have never been through devastating floods and tornadoes I can see your viewpoint but, these people are a bit shell shocked and lost quite a bit of their lives.
I’m gonna cut em some slack.
BTW, it isn’t just they lost their homes and possessions but the devastation is everywhere and probably overwhelming.

Sorry, what you are seeing is the political reaction of Christie instead of being a Governor. He is NOT the one to go one on one with the individual cases (sure does look good for politicians though), he needs to have an expansive outlook for the State and act as such - not on an individual basis.
For those that think this is appropriate, let’s send him around to everyone who is grieving and see how much time he has left to tend to the State’s problems!
It looks good and feels good but does nothing for the State in general. It’s political!
I guess Pres Bush with the bullhorn at ground zero was grandstanding. Most of FR may not like Christies politics but he needs no lessons in governance from any here or from Rush. Like Rush most here seem to have forgotten that the conservative roots, people like Goldwater, Buckley made empowering local and state govt an important part of their agenda to return power to the people. Christie governs NJ well and he sees that this catatstrophe is not just limited to the homeowners and business people but to the future well being of the state’s economy. Summer tourism to the best beaches south of Long Island is a driver of NJ’s economy and taking any help to restore it is his job 1.

I believe I spent most of my original post doing that. My beef is with the spectacle, which is caused by politicians and the media.
Actually Bush’s bullhorn at ground zero was grandstanding a bit but was for the Country, not for an individual. If you don’t see the difference, then you are naive.
When politicians go for one on one political grandstanding then it is just that (ie. photo ops)! I am sure that you actually see the difference but refuse to understand.
Now if he had stood on the Jersey shores and proclaimed that we would overcome, then that would have been for the State.
This is per Todd Schnitt, host on the Schnitt Show on radio. It's 4 PM as I post this. Schnitt is checking it out during the break...wants to see if it's true and if it only affects devasted areas, not the whole state.
