VANITY: Recommendations on moving to Idaho or Montana... or elsewhere?
Third Person | November 10th, 2012 | Third Person

Hi FReepers...

For the last year, my wife and I have been giving serious consideration to moving our family out west.

We are born and raised New Englanders. We're a homeschooling family that enjoys outdoor mountain activities and also the arts and sciences.

We are looking for a conservative area [low taxes, less government, personal freedom, family friendly] and were wondering if anyone out there might have some recommendations. I have focused on Idaho and Montana, but am receptive to other suggestions.

I plan on making a trip out early next year to investigate... thanks in advance to all who reply!

I built a cabin near Fernwood (near St.Maries) back in ‘72 and lived there for 6 years. I used to go to Sandpoint to ski (Schweitzer Basin) and Athol to skydive. I found the people to be very self-reliant.

Can’t help with that. Don’t know of the demand in Idaho. SE Idaho the population is only around 500k

I don’t think there is a swimming pool in our county, but there also isn’t a traffic light.

Wherever you happen to land, do not start thinking how you did things better back home, and if you just changed this one way, everyone would be better off. We have it set up the way we want it, and leave it alone.

Did anyone report news on Rush Limbaugh announcing he was moving to Costa Rica? My husband texted me from overseas and said he heard this and that I had to read his statement. I came right on here thinking I’d see it but I don’t see anything anywhere about it. LOL Now he’s sleeping and I can’t ask where he heard this...maybe it was from when he threatened to move to Costa Rica in 2010?

"Not a lot of high paying jobs here."

A Huge indirect Mountain Tax somehow suppresses wages.

IDK which would be better but if I were seeking to move I would move South. They have a stronger tradition of state's rights, and experience dealing with a tyrannical federal government. Nowhere in the US can be considered an absolute sanctuary now, but some places will hold out a lot longer than others. Go South, young man.

Some years ago I spent time researching about where I would like to live if I could just get up and go, the number one place I came up with for many different reasons was, Kentucky.

I live in the Spokane area. Whatever you do stay west of the Rockies. The snow blows off the mountains and keeps going until it hits the great lakes.

Idaho is great but they have income tax. Eastern Washington is good, no income tax, but high property tax and they tax the hell out of everything else. If you live close to the ID border you can avoid the state income tax and cross the border and avoid the stupid retail taxes. Everybody I know does.

Yeah. I hate the Californians that move here and want to “improve” things to be more like CA.

Very interesting post. My wife and I have made the decision its time to get the hell out of here (CT). We are not an ATM for state unions. We are looking at Texas and Oklahoma if they will have us. I am an mechanical engineer and she is a registered nurse.

I came here through the Navy, assigned here as a submarine officer and married a local.... well. Now this election and 2008. I am not impressed. Its time to move to a redder state.

I live in Shelley, Idaho. Just outside of Idaho Falls, on the southeast side of the state. Snake river half a mile away. 3000 + - pop. I’m from Idaho and like it. Good rock collecting. Good fishing. Good hunting. GOOD NEIGHBORS. And yeah, most of them are Mormons. But the thing is, is you are a product of your environment. Good air, good outdoor recreation, good neighbors. And this state be red.

Might want to look in the Roanoke, VA suburbs. Beautiful country, nice climate, very conservative, lots of outdoor activities, some arts and sciences in Roanoke, but only a few hours from D.C., Richmond, and Charlotte for all the arts and sciences you could want. Housing and cost of living are reasonable.

Decent job opportunities - not booming, but not depressed either.

High-end swimming pool construction, service, and maintenance. A family business... the entire family is considering relocating, in stages.

Look what's going on now in the areas that you are looking at to relocate - get onto a satellite map site and look for blue dots in backyards :>)p>Are you now installing (experienced in) high-end indoor pools?
