ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -
My small dogs bark at everything outside. I hope they would alert to an intruder.
I have a 10lb maltepoo and his 4 lb daughter. Both would raise hell, but both like people too much and would probably be carried out. My boy MIGHT bite, but how much damage would he do?
Without even watching, I bet I know the answer.
:)
Have two shelties here . . . I’d think they’d bark their heads off . . . like they do for the quarterly bug man, and others who enter our home or descend upon our front steps. They serve as my alarm . . . then I’ll grab my gun.
Are they bringing bacon as an offering? Venison? Smoked Squirrel? Stewed woodchuck?
If the intruder were quiet, then my Goldendoodle wouldn’t wake up. If he did, then the intruder better be ready to deal with some serious licking!
Could the experiment be flawed if the burglar does not exhibit anxiety or hate while committing the crime? Don’t dogs pick up on the demeanor of a person to determine if they pose a threat and react accordingly?
My parents had this old mutt for around 15 years. He was half German Shepherd and half mutt. He was the most easy going dog I have ever seen.
I can remember my two year old daughter ordering him around and he immediately cowered with his head between his paws. I can remember some of my nieces and nephews playing with him and he would let them literally cover his coat with spanish moss without even shaking it off until they went away.
One day two of my Mother’s Sisters stopped by to visit but my parents happened to be gone. One of them needed to use the bathroom so they went to the front door.
They later told Mother that the dog got between them and the door and absolutely would not let them approach it. He growled and barked and generally acted vicious.
That really surprised all of us.
They originally did this study with assistance by the local police department. Unfortunately, the dogs’ reactions were not measurable — the cops shot the dogs as soon as they entered.
My Springer would bark her head off while they are outside and want to curl up in their arms when they made it inside. Watch dog, not a guard dog.
More worried about how a damn cop intruder would react. They shoot all furry moving things.
Bring a sausage and mine will shake hands.
The German Shepherd was a total coward.I have a German Shepherd that I would like to loan them if they want to rerun the test. The intruder might want to look for a helmet with face shield before meeting Hannah.
Exactly.
In his latter years, my Dad had a big, tough looking German Shepard. I thought somewould would have to be crazy to break in with that thing around. And one day, in the middle of the night, someone did.
The dog did absolutely nothing.
My dog definitely reacted to Kevlar’s barking (the German Shepherd). Unfortunately, I think he would react to an intruder the same way Kevlar did. “Can I help you carry anything out? Got any treats?”
When my neighbor goes away from town we walk her dog for her. She gives us the key to her place so we can fetch him. If we let ourselves in we have to hunt all over the house until we find him, usually sleeping on a bed. Now we ring the bell and he comes running down barking up a storm. So if the burglar was quiet the dog would be pretty much worthless.
My little Maltese barks at anything. We’ve changed her name from Clio to Doorbell. My Siberian Husky (mostly an outside dog) looks like a wolf and growls at every stranger that nears our door. She has never attacked anyone, but I think she would if provoked. Between the two of them, I feel protected.
Too bad Australian Cattle Dog is not on the list. Our one is especially aggressive towards any stranger, and always barks at anything in the range of her senses.
My Dad’s German Shepard was absolutely useless. It didn’t bark at the intruders. It only started barking when he scuffled with the intruders, but did nothing to really protect him.
Our Shih Tzu might bark a little, but she considers every visitor to be a new best friend so she’d probably roll over on her back for a tummy scratch.

I have a black lab that weighs in at about 120 lbs, he loves people and when you look at him he smiles. It is creepy and freaks out strangers, he wags his tail and bares his teeth at the same time, kind of a silence of the lambs thing.
We were burgaled a few years back. We had our small beagle/basset mix in the back part of the house with the doors closing off that part of the house. She’s a small dog with a big bark and the burglars didn’t enter that part of the house.
Years ago I read an article on guard dogs and hope it was not an Urban Legend. Some guy saw a German Shepherd for sale - CHEAP - in a local classified.
Intrigued, he visited the owner, who ran a small country general store. The owner had been burgled a couple of times and bought a “vicious” German Shepherd to guard the place at night.
Sure enough, one night a buglar broke in and ransacked the store. The dog slept through the whole thing.
When the Sheriff came to investigate, the dog woke up and bit him.
Hence the low sale price.
LOL, Kevlar the Shepherd is a big baby!
We don’t have a dog, but my sister-in-law had a gorgeous German Shepherd for protection. He was trained in the Schitzhund (sp?) method. He would likely have killed a real intruder.
With family, though, he was a sweetheart. I miss that dog.
Showing some tooth as part of the Happy Smile is not big deal. It's when the lips are retracted and the hair rises that it becomes a concern (like my part Chesapeake).
My Black Lab has big white teeth (that's all they can see, 'cause NO light is reflected by the dog) that scare folks (who obviously don't know Labs) when she smiles the Happy Dog Smile.
I don’t know how our dogs would react. Our newer dog is a chow mix but she’s pretty cautious and I would not put it past her to at least bark and growl. Whether she would bite I don’t know. They alert to anyone walking by the house. Our Rottie/GSD mix is big and intimidating but he wants to be everyone’s friend. He did growl at someone he saw approaching the front door. How he would act once they were in the house I don’t know. The problem with pets is often they are reprimanded against barking or growling at anyone in your home, so unless they are trained, they aren’t likely to do anything to anyone once they’ve entered the home IMHO.
My wee angels? They bark, but that’s it. Not a bit of threat to anyone, ever.
Of course I’m the one with the trigger finger.
We make a good team.
I’ve read that about ACD’s, they’re on my list of possibilities if and when I get a dog.
For now, my cat rules the roost. And she is one heck of a guard cat, too! Some workmen were fixing the electicals on the side of the house once, as soon as they got near the porch she turned into a snarling, yowling monster. Which was quite a surprise, because she’s usually such a people-cat.
It’s always a question of getting the right dog.I tell the breeder what kind of personality we want, and so far he’s provided the right dogs. The parents have always been Schutzhund rated, their offspring have had what it takes.
My poochies(Nemo-half Pomeranian, half maltese) would bark like crazy, then flip over for tummy rubs..Maxie(Pure bred Shih tzu) would just bark but do nothing
My dog Goober treats each doorbell ring initially as possible fresh meat and if she doesn’t recognize you, you probably will be!

My dogs, two shelties, continue barking until I tell them NO BARK. When they bark, whether it be thunder, or a package left on porch with bell being run, or whatever, they usually will not stop until I get up, go look and tell them it is ok and good little guard dogs. :)
That said, I hope I never have to find out. I spend a lot of time at home alone these days, I’m a SAHM, so I love having them and they give me a bit of a sense of security, not as much as my various guns do, but again, hope I don’t have to use them. I will though.
I know right now what would happen. My Shiatsu-Yorkie mix would yap her ass off till they got in, the 60 pound border-collie/lab would not bark would lick attack and then show them where the silver was.
Like others I count on he little one waking me then I grab my bedside gun.
He's thinking, 'Got a link?'
If someone broke into my house and we were home, and that person threatened any one of us, no doubt in my mind that dog (Jerry) would've protected us.
Jerry died 6 years ago, and now we have a Labradoodle (hey, he was a shelter dog, we got him for free and he's a great dog.) The only problem with this dog is, he's a lover - not a fighter.
Someone breaks into my house, this dog will show them where all the good stuff is! I swear it's true.
Unfortunately after I shot them dead for breaking in, I still wouldn't have the heart to shoot the dog.

He’s a goof!
Sunday the neighbor behind us was getting some limbs cut down and a worker was in the tree next to our fence. Our pit bull / red heeler mix went out the doggie door with his fur standing up from the tip of his nose to the tip of his tail.
I guarantee if that guy had fallen out of the tree he would have been dead before he hit the ground. The rest of the dogs just barked.
However when guest show up PitStop is as happy to see them as he is to see us when we get home. He is as gentle as a lamb with the grand-babies too.
My last dog, a German Shepherd/Golden Retriever mix had what was called the 'Shepherd Smile.' When he 'smiled' it looked like he was snarling and ready to bite.
He'd wag his tail, come right up to you with that 'Shepherd Smile.'
I happened to love it when he did that. Folks who were just meeting him for the first time or service people who came to the house didn't have a clue and were terrified of him -- I liked it that way. :-)
One time some unsolicited salesman came to the door and was acting like a jerk. I whistled for "Jerry" to come running from where ever in the house he was. Sure enough, he came running with his 'Shepherd Smile' showing at which point I opened the front door and said "Get 'em!"
This jerk had no clue all Jerry wanted was to say hello and get a pet or two as he ran screaming down my driveway for his car. LOL!!!
I miss that dog. He died 7 years ago. Best dog I ever had, and I've had dogs all my life. Funny, every dog I've ever had has been great in their own way and they all have a special place in my heart. When I pray, I ask the Lord to send them to come get me "when my time comes." I miss 'em all.
That’s it, my three dogs just advise when it’s time to get out the shotgun.
That’s a photo of your dog? What a beauty! I’ve never seen a black lab with such light colored eyes. Is that unusual?
I agree. To make some stupid point they obviously picked wimp dogs.
They are welcome to try this at my house if they want a different outcome.
This is Chloe having a good time in my yard. She is still a puppy. She is the worst one I have ever seen to chew everything she can get her teeth on.
