Things have changed some since I went to the Watkins Glen GP in the 60's. (My next door neighbor was the Chief Timer and Scorer.

(I got my Dad to drive the family Station Wagon 'round the course some months off of the race w/e.)

" A SCIENTIFIC HAY BALE

"It seems reasonable to assume that, for racing purposes at least, a 'scientific hay bale' can be built—a large, low-density penetration barrier which would absorb the speed of a runaway car while being penetrated by it. The center of gravity would be higher than the car's to prevent climbing and overturning. Perhaps straw and broken cornstalks mixed with a tar binder would provide the desired characteristics. No one really knows; this is a problem for the physicist and the chemist. Continue Story"

A few of my local pals, here in the general MetroMess area, are headed down this weekend. It is all any of them have been talking about for a while. Good on ‘em, I can only hope Tilke has built a gooder ‘un.

Go Alonso, make Enzo proud. I’ll be on a 64 mile mountain bike ride up north, along the Rio Rojo. Catch up on what happened when AutoWeek drops in my mailbox next week.

Tifosi Up!

I have a bunch of slides taken just outside of the garage near the middle of the track.

I remember the "scream" of the high revving Honda as it smoked 'round the track.

Much less security back then.

I met Jackie Stewart a couple of times much later.

I think so. The cylinders were real small and the thing ran at such high revs it was like a bee buzzing about.

None of those cars idled well, so they were always blipping the throttle on the road between the garage and the pits.

Party sponsored by Lamborghini tried to airlift yacht into Austin lake for F1 race

This was the kind of understatement we didn't expect to encounter in the Lone Star State: on our way into Austin to attend the Grand Prix of the Americas, the man sitting next to us on the plane – an Austinite born and raised – said, "There's gonna be a lot of wealthy people here." You know, as if Texas didn't have its fair share already.

Wealthy people need wealthy things to do and not-as-wealthy people to arrange such things for them. Case in point is My Yacht Club, which follows the Formula 1 parade and other rah-rah events around the globe, hosting guests and parties on yachts. In Austin the event group has had to change its schtick; there's no way to navigate one 150-foot motor yacht into Austin's Lady Bird Lake. MYC principal Nicholas Frankl told KUT News, "We spoke to the Army Air Corps. They couldn't lift it." We believe he meant the Army Corps of Engineers, but no matter, they couldn't lift it either.

So MYC has switched to a land-lubbers venue, The Long Center where Ballet Austin, the opera and the symphony perform. In case you readers are worried about how guests will manage without chiseled Italian deckhands in epaulets, not only has Frankl promised that "the elements of decadence and luxury and coolness and exclusivity are all there," guests will get to guzzle 24-karat gold-infused champagne. Because the stars at night just aren't as big and bright without it, obviously.

Pole at the Austin GP will be 1:37.53

That is the calculation made using OptimumLap simulation software by OptimumG a vehicle dynamics consulting and data acquisition company based in Colorado and boasting a client list that reads like a who's who of international racing and automobile manufacturing.

Watched both practices today. Very good. I don't play arcade-y type games, so I've yet to drive the COTA (a friend is working on a conversion for RACE 07). I have watched a few videos, though. I can tell you that lack of visual cues along the race track make it very difficult in determining brake points.

T1 is an obvious one, being at the brow of a hill, but the track is so open (good for spectators) it is hard to learn the track quickly, but I guess that's why the drivers are called "professionals", huh?

I hope to see a good race Sunday. Vettel against Alonso. Would love to see a good battle to the finish between those two!

Watched Speed, track looks pretty sporty, but wish they would have made it downhill at the end of the straight instead of uphill (Road Atlanta-esque).

Angling for a shot at working the MotoGP depending on who they have as staffing agent for the grunts.

damn straight!!! it should run clockwise and downhill to the finish... that would be one hell of a rush coming out of the last turn and diving down that hill

best of luck with the Moto-GP

The main straight at Mid-Ohio goes sharply downhill at the end. After a couple of laps it was always a thrill pumping up the pedal down the straight and wondering how much brake there would be.

Track is nice, but whoever is in charge of the race here is clueless. Nothing marked to get in/out, huge lines everywhere, GA sections are unseeded/unsoded. Not sure if the cash-only at all of the booths is just F1 or if they had satellite issues, but was not hearing many good things today - except for people saying it’ll get better because it’s the first day (but of course - also the day with the fewest people).

I’m sure it’s a huge challenge to open up a built from scratch facility with your biggest event. All your working grunts are pretty much neophytes.

When they had F-1 at Indy it was small potatoes, relatively, 100k people vs 250k for the 500.

I know at Kentucky last year they had Sprint Cup for the first time, they had 10 yrs of experience with smaller crowds (30K for Indy and Nationwide) when the 100k showed up it was still a disaster.

Austin has been clueless about managing traffic for decades, no surprise there. Eventually they’ll figure it out. Hope you have a nice time while you’re here.

That was a great race, lots of good battles up and down the grid. T1 and then those esses look incredible, especially with some of those wide TV shots.

Gonna try to go next year, always best to let them shake out some of the rookie problems (learned that from 1st MotoGP race at Laguna Seca).

Great crowd, great race.
If it follows the pattern, F-1 will bow out in 5 yrs and Austin will have the best SCCA track around.

BTW Keselowski just gave a great drunk interview on Wind Tunnel.
