Despite a strong first half and some great character material, "Skyfall" craters thanks to a boring second half, lackluster villain, and plot holes galore.

The movie was it’s own spoiler. Terrible. Bring coffee. Lots of coffee.
The wife and I saw it and we thought it was better than some of the other Bond movies. If you are looking for just entertainment with action this one is not bad. It does refer to some of the earlier Bond moves with the Aston Martin, For Your Eyes Only and a few other lines of dialogue.
I don’t think it was that bad, but I agree the third act was kind of a downer. I suspect it was an issue of budget. During the making of the movie, the studio went bankrupt and production was halted for something like two years. Then the studio was bought and production restarted. I don’t know at what point production was halted, whether anything had been filmed yet, but the third act is considerably cheaper in production costs than the first part of the film. I think they just ran into budget constraints and did the best they could.
A few other homages to earlier films that I noticed: the apparent “death” of Bond in the pre-title sequence(”You Only Live Twice”), the villain’s sacrificial lamb girl in Macau and her shower scene(”The Man With The Golden Gun”), Bond chasing the bad guys atop a moving train(”Octopussy”).
The second half: “Home Alone IV”.

Are all the film critics glowing reviews that this is one of the best Bond films ever, just flat out wrong?
The ejector seat button (Goldfinger) The glass panels mirroring the killer and Bond in the sniper scene in the high rise (Man With The Golden Gun).
Nice to see Moneypenny and Q even if new faces.
Reference to exploding pens (Never Say Never).
The yacht motoring up to Silva’s island seemed to be an homage to a similar scene in Dr. No.
The ending reminded me of some of the later Roger Moore Bond films where he was trying to prove that he was still young enough to handle the role so there was a lot more hand-to-hand combat, running around, etc.
At the Q&A Daniel Craig made it clear that despite what happened to all of the other characters he definitely wanted to remain as James Bond.
SF’s very well-made and an improvement over its predecessor. But I don’t see it having a lot of rewatchability value. I’m biased of course but when I want my 007 “comfort food” movies to re-watch, I tend to prefer the films made in the first quarter century of cinema Bond’s existence(1962-1987) to the ones made from 1989 onwards.

I think Severine seemed to be a recycling of the doomed Andrea Anders, Maud Adams’ character from TMWTGG.

That creeped me out as well. Though I think it was supposed to be an example of Bond and the villain trying to psych each other out.

That worked for Sir Rog in MR, FYEO and OP. But with AVTAK, he went one time too many IMHO.
