Long Island residents experiences : Cash : - is king. But, we made the mistake of keeping large bills ($50s )....... Heat: I live in a house with oil heating. Without power, the heat turns doesn't work (the hot water follows suite)....... Fuel:- We topped off the tanks, but weren't expecting the gas shortage that ensued. ....Communication:- Phone lines were down and cell phone coverage was affected. I need to come up with a plan for communicating that relies on alternate sources of energy. ......Protection: - Every night I feel as though we're in a fishbowl. With no curtains on the windows, the entire world can see in and I can't see out. .....Training: - we need to be better prepared as a unit. I was the only one who knew where the flashlights and batteries were. I'm the only one who knows how to throw the main breaker or turn on/off the furnace. I will also need to make sure my wife is trained on whatever protection we obtain (shotgun, rifle or otherwise) in case I am incapable of protecting the family.....

Don’t forget about the “Water BOB” that fits inside a tub. About $30 and it’ll hold about 120 gallons of water, IIRC.
I have some surplused USGI 5gal/20L plastic cans bace by Scepter. Tough to get replacement parts, but the best cans ever made.

One thing that many folks forget about when they buy a shotgun for home defense....hearing protection. You let loose with a 12ga or a 20ga scatter gun, it is LOUD. It will damage your hearing in close quarters.
I use the electronic headphone type of hearing protection and have a set right next to the Mossberg. There are many varieties and some are downright inexpensive.
These will actually enhances your hearing of ambient sounds in a house at night and will mute the built in microphones when it detects a noise above something like 60db. Beats the hell out of earplugs.

My parents live in a rural area and have well water, which doesn’t work during a power outage. This beats filling up gallon jugs in preparation for a storm.

I’m a retired army vet. On the firings we always used hearing protection. I have never had time to put on hearing protection when facing hostile activity. To hesitate that long might just get you killed. Arm yourself first, make the weapon ready to fire, assess the situation, put yourself where you need to be and then put on hearing protection. Protect life first.
I use this type of hearing protection now while on the range but no other place.

That stove is interesting but only as a backup to your backup. Get a liquid multi fuel camping stove that burns reg gas, a multi fuel lantern and a propane lantern. Then get the converter that allows you to burn propane in the same stove. Buy the hoses and lager bulk propane tanks and a couple of indoor rated heaters that will also run off of the propane tank. Add an upright distrabution pole to the tank and you got it all together. A stove to cook on, heaters, and light. Two to four 10 gallon propane tanks will last you for a couple of months if you watch how much you use everything. Keep the gas in reserve and use it in the stove and the multi fuel lantern if the situation is prolonged.
The best advise I can give to the “city folks” is to become avid campers. Go places that have no electricity or bathroom and see what you need to survive (fuel, warmth, food, sanitation, and water) then see what you want to add to be somewhat comfortable for two months. This will be the least of the amount of equipment and supplies that you should have stashed.
If this storm has taught the city folks anything at all it should be that they need to ready to take care of themselves and not leave it to the government to bail their butts out.

Last Christmas, I went to a movie with relatives who were visiting. Had not been in a movie theater in years. The sound was so loud, it had to be destroying people's hearing (and I didn't have those ear plugs with me). I thought the people in there are going to have hearing aids in the future. If I had been my myself I would have left. I never want to go to a movie theater again. If you haven't been in years, don't go as the sound will kill your ears.
