Mexico facing a diabetes ‘disaster’ as obesity levels soar

MEXICO CITY — With each bite into a greasy taco and slurp of a sugary drink, Mexico hurtles toward what health experts predict will be a public health crisis from diabetes-related disease.

A fifth of all Mexican women and more than a quarter of men are believed to be at risk for diabetes now. It’s already the nation’s No. 1 killer, taking some 70,000 lives a year, far more than gangster violence.

Public health experts blame changes in lifestyle that have made Mexicans more obese than anywhere else on Earth except the United States. They attribute changes to powerful snack and soft drink industries, newly sedentary ways of living and a genetic heritage susceptible to diabetes, a chronic, life-threatening illness.

The results are evident at public hospitals, where those needing treatment for diabetes-related illness, such as blindness and kidney dialysis, clamor for help.

“The first time we came, we had to wait 12 days for my husband to get dialysis,” said Marta Remigio Jasso, who spoke on the grounds of the General Hospital of Mexico, a public unit of the Secretariat of Health. “I slept under my husband’s hospital bed.”

Already, some 150,000 Mexicans receive kidney dialysis, but nearly the same number are denied treatment for lack of insurance, said Dr. Abelardo Avila Curiel, a physician and expert in population studies at one of Mexico’s most prestigious medical centers, the Salvador Zubiran National Institute of Medical Sciences and Nutrition.

“A fifth of all Mexican women and more than a quarter of men are believed to be at risk for diabetes now.”

Stunning stat because men generally have a higher metabolism than women. I am always stunned to see a man with more fat than a woman. Woman naturally have a little more fat than men, but not Mexico City...

That's right, it can't EVER be the fault of the consumer.

Well, this will be the U.S. in about two years in part to lots of your peeps coming over here. So yeah, just deal with it!

Well of course Health Experts would blame capitalist industries whose goal is to make evil profits.

But the real culprit (if you discount personal choices) is crony-socialist government that causes high unemployment which leads to sedentary people with nothing but time and cheap food on their hands (made possible by capitalist industry).

People that have to work for a living have less free time to eat excessively and probably are more active.

What a massive load of crap.

Cuba and North Korea don't have an obesity and diabetes problem.

This is a problem created by rising wealth and personal choices.

Lazy people do not get wealthier and have more to eat.

Diabetes not a big problem in Sandinista run Nicaragua either.

The move from an agricultural and industrial to a more service based economy causes a sedentary life style.

That is because the green apple quickstep is not just a gringo problem. Bottled or canned anything is the safest way to get fluids. Unfortunately you suffer the consequences, obesity and dental caries.

Oh yes, once we are a socialist paradise we will not have to deal with obesity and diabetes and our people will be so much better off. (All hail Obama)

We might have to deal with rickets and scurvy but on the other hand we will all be shorter so fewer people will bump their heads going through door ways.

Didn’t Hillary Clinton talk about a need to reduce the worlds population by 75%?

They can have the first ‘Lady’ Ma Mooooochelle to forcibly regulate their diets. As a package deal we’ll throw in her skinny Kenyan model pet as a bonus. Viva May-he-go. Hey most Mexicans voted for him anyway-—they own him so take him away to the Madreland.

So, what's the big deal?

In the very near future (if they are not already doing so) our DHS, HHS, FDA or some other Gubmint Agency will be (in Mexico) advising our "neighbors" to the South not only how to apply for (and receive) Food Stamps Benefits (as well as Section 8, etc) they will be reminding them that with Obamacare if they should "decide" to "immigrate" they can be assured of FREE Health care (if not Citizenship) for life.

Got to keep adding new RAT "voters" to the 12-20 Million already here, donthca know?

I’ve traveled all over Mexico from an early age-mostly by car-to archaelogical sites, not to the “tourist” areas. I never had a problem finding bottled mineral water-Penafiel was a common brand-for myself, husband and kids, or diet Sprite, if anyone wanted it. People drink the sugary crap for the same reason they do here-they like the taste (gag!)

So, help me understand this --they are all getting fat, obviously have ample food and sit around watching soap operas all day to which our corrupt government advertises to them, urging them to come here for "free" stuff...

Then what exactly is drawing them here? The free stuff? Looks like they already leading a life of leisure.
