Report: Smith Informed Kaepernick Will Start
NBC Bay Area ^ | Wednesday, November 21, 2012

Colin Kaepernick will start Sunday's game against the New Orleans Saints over Alex Smith, according to a report.

San Diego-based Sports Illustrated writer Jim Trotter tweeted Wednesday evening that Jim Harbaugh informed Smith of his decision and that it was not due to the former No. 1 overall pick's recent concussion.

Just over an hour after Trotter's tweet, a producer with ESPN followed up with a tweet that complicates matters:

Trotter Tweet:
BREAKING: Jim Harbaugh has informed Alex Smith that Colin Kaepernick will start Sunday, per source. Said decision not based on health.

Seth Markman:
Alex Smith just told @TDESPN that Harbaugh told him Kaepernick would get 1st team reps but door open to start game based on practice

Trotter:
i have great respect for @TDESPN and alex smith, and stand behind my report. harbaugh to alex: "I'm going with Kaepernick. Alex, I'm sorry."

In his first career NFL start last Monday, Kaepernick passed for 243 yards and threw two touchdowns and no interceptions in the 49ers' blowout win over the Bears. Smith has passed for 1,731 yards and put together a 13/5 TD/INT ratio before sustaining a concussion in the 49ers' tie with the Rams on Nov. 11.

thank you for sharing your thinking on this... i hope you’re right! but i’m feeling nervous... i wanted the Niners to play the Falcons... i believe they are the superior team... but like you said, sometimes they don’t show up (a la Rams)... i want them to play muy well...

Go NINERS!

It is not possible to beat a team in the playoffs when the team take a 17 point lead at their home. Especially if they are a #1 seed.

(Unbelievable)

I kept saying, even if they were down, the 49ers have to stick with their run game. Thankfully, they did. 29 rushes for 149 yards. They set themselves up for victory.

i still can’t grasp how the NINERS won this game... i watched it in agony, even when we finally pulled ahead... i have to watch it again without all the frustration... but i am happy!

so what are your thoughts on the Super Bowl? i’ve been watching ESPN and just about every commentator it seems thinks the Ravens have this... first they set it up as the NINERS being the better team... the younger team... the team that has so much on so many levels... but in the end they say the Ravens will win this... “peaking at the right moment” seems to be the reason...

They are saying that? The Ravens do look better than they did during the end of the regular season. But the same can be said of the 49ers. Their last 2 game impressed me as much as any all season. I think the 49ers have what it takes to win. I hope they run Gore early and often.

I think Justin Smith will be healthier. I heard Brooks injured his shoulder in practice, but not sure if it’s bad.

I really thought the play-calling on offense was the best it's been all season in the last two games.

I think it's interesting. They didn't run Kap at all the last few games. Then they did in a major way against Green Bay. Green Bay was unprepared for that. Then the Falcons spent a lot of time preparing for that, but the 49ers barely ran any designed plays for Kap.

this is what makes them dangerous! and Kap's coolness under pressure... throwing that early pick in the Greenbay game--but not letting it define the rest of the game... down 17 points against the Falcons, but coming right back... he's got the makings of someone who's been doing this forever...
