Computer Glasses: The End Of The Smartphone Era Is Coming (Google and Micorosft are ready)
Business Insider ^ | 11/23/2012 | Nicholas Carlson

You've heard that Google is working on computerized glasses. They're called Google Glass, and developers can already buy them.

It turns out Microsoft is working on something similar. It filed some patents on the project and Unwired View dug them up.

There's a big difference between what Microsoft is working on and Google Glass, though.

The most recent word out of Google is that Google Glass isn't going to use "augmented reality" – where data and illustrations overlay the actual world around you. Google Glass is actually just a tiny screen you have to look up and to the left to see.

Microsoft's glasses seem to utilize augmented reality. In a patent illustration we've embedded below, you can see that the glasses put data on top of a live action concert and a ballgame.

Both gadget concepts are very interesting.

Lots of people disagree with me, including other BI writers, but I think something like Google Glass or whatever Microsoft is working on could end up replacing the smartphone as the dominant way people access the Internet and connect to each other.

First off: something has to. Disruption is inevitable.

Secondly: The trend is obvious. Computers have been getting smaller and closer to our faces since their very beginning.

First they were in big rooms, then they sat on desktops, then they sat on our laps, and now they're in our palms. Next they'll be on our faces.

(Eventually they'll be in our brains.)

By the way, you can bet that if Microsoft and Google are working on computerized glasses, so is Apple and Jony Ive.

Healthwise, wouldn’t this be the equivalent to walking around with a cell phone strapped to your head?

Brain tumor, anyone?

Vernor Vinge’s book “Rainbows End” provides an interesting take on a future with incredible advances in wearable computing/ubiquitous computing.

After the glasses, the next step will be a contact lens:

“Riiiiight.....people are just going to be watching porn on them.

You say that like it’s a bad thing!”

Guess what “DEAR OLD DAD” wants for Christmas?

If the options settings are set up well, you could possibly choose the info that you want to see and turn the sound off completely.

Voice recognition will have to get a lot better than it is.

“Riiiiight.....people are just going to be watching porn on them.”

Brings a whole new meaning to the old bumper sticker “Watch my rear end, not hers!”

I’d guess that there will be a whole new class of moving violation tickets written by troopers:

DWL -”Driving While Leering”.

Auto accidents will skyrocket!

Oliver Stone produced a terrific TV mini-series about this 20+ eyars ago.

It seemed pure sci-fi in the era of dialup modems only.

Folks mostly just escaped into virtual reality play rooms, sitting in the corner like junkies.

I remember seeing those ads when I was a kid. Did anybody ever order them? What did they get? Did they work?

How about using smart glasses for something more quotidian, like vision correction? With lenses that emit a counter-blurred picture for the near- or farsighted to see properly?

Granted that it's not a whiz-bang idea, but it'd sell like hotcakes. No more paying for new glasses [or lenses, which cost close to a new pair] just because you need a new prescription.

I remember those ads, too. I figure if they DID work, you wouldn’t have to ask as we would all have a pair of them already.

Eye strain, headache and possibly migraine city.
For the people who can't walk and chew gum, frightening.

It won’t be long until someone is found with their car wrapped around a telephone pole with a porno running in these glasses.

I wonder what people will be like in 100yrs if we keep finding ways to input and increase the data we are exposed to?
