WWII code 'may never be cracked'
BBC ^ | 23 November 2012 | staff reporter

Posted on 11/23/2012 7:43:21 PM PST by Daffynition

Experts at intelligence agency GCHQ have asked for help in de-coding a message found attached to a pigeon leg, thought to date back to WWII.

The dead bird was found in a chimney in Surrey a few weeks ago.

But without more information, the code may never be cracked, according to the BBC's security correspondent Gordon Corera.

The code is as follows:

AOAKN HVPKD FNFJW YIDDC

RQXSR DJHFP GOVFN MIAPX

PABUZ WYYNP CMPNW HJRZH

NLXKG MEMKK ONOIB AKEEQ

WAOTA RBQRH DJOFM TPZEH

....[snip]

If it was created using a 1 time pad, doubt there will ever be a solution.

Yep, if you have no key.

It might be in a different language. It might not be complete words.

It might be a whole different code when unraveled!!

Yep, looks like each word is 5 characters. Likely look-up to the real words in a one-time pad. Without the pad there is no way to break the code.

I have a first derivative of the coded message on the Pigeon’s Leg. However, I can’t make any sense of it. Maybe y’all can figure it out. Here it is:

It was already decoded in 1963 when another bird, same message, was found in a trashcan by the trashmen.

The problem is what if their code was sent in a different code and the original message left out vowels or was in a totally different language?

Joe hasn’t changed much through the years. Here’s the translation...

“The food sucks. We never get our mail. The Officers are idiots. The Germans have better weapons than us. I never get enough sleep. It’s too hot, cold, rainy and snowy at the same time. My boots are too tight. The Air Force gets all the girls....and some of the guys. Everyone yells at me. I went on sick call and they made me eat a worm. I never get promoted because the Captain hates people with eyebrows.”

Crypto structure is very important.

For instance:

Japanese KataKana methods.

That was a challenge, with much of the world hanging in the balance.

This is the world of Herbert Yardley and others like him. Including our own Thomas Jefferson.

Looks very much like a message sent by some Russian agent using their typical onetime day pads. All this type of code - day cyphers - use 5 letters, usually read over radio with Russian first names being used for each letter.

AOAKN being read as Anna, Oleg, Anna, Kirill, Nikita.

And so on for each group. These messages can drone on for a long time.

The code itself has been long broken, but that particular message will likely not be deciphered, unless some one discovers the key to the one day pad in use on that day by Russian agents in England during WWII.

Someone once wrote that the codemaker’s chief weapon is guile.

27 five-letter groups, of 135 characters, long enough to succumb to a skilled codebreaker. I’m not one. The first group of five and the last are identical, hmm.

AOAKNHVPKDFNFJWYIDDCRQXSRDJHFPGOVFNMIAPXPABUZWYYNPCMPNWHJRZHNLXKGMEMKKONOIBAKEEQWAOTARBQRHDJOFMTPZEHLKXGHRGGHTJRZCQFNKTQKLDTSFQIRWAOAKN

alphabetical:

AAAAAAAAABBBCCCDDDDDDEEEEFFFFFFFGGGGGHHHHHHHHIIIIJJJJJKKKKKKKKKKLLLMMMMMNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOPPPPPPPQQQQQQRRRRRRRRSSTTTTTUVVWWWWWXXXXYYYZZZZ

Every letter is used, with the uncommon letters showing up it decent numbers, suggesting (not proving) that it’s a single-layer substitution cipher. There’s only one instance of U, but it’s a short message. Here’s an example frequency table:

E T A O N I S H R L D U C M W Y F G P B V K J X Q Z

Here’s another one:

Some of the groups are obvious “place holders”, and the message reads:

“Pound pastrami, can kraut, six bagels—bring home for Emma.”

We believe this to be an embedded code, rather than the message itself. Dan Brown is doing further research on it.

BTW, is that a pic of The Maltese Pigeon?
