To: Young Werther

I don’t know much about the man, but in Hollywood where marriage is considered an accessory to be taken on and off at will, he leaves behind his widowed wife to whom he remained married for 58 years, through better and worse. I salute him for that. Rest in peace Mr. Hagman.

That's something I picked up as well. When I read a bio (or an obit) that's one thing I always subconsciously make note of. Now admittedly, there are some odious people who remain married for the long haul, but in general, I think it says a lot about a person's character, particularly as you point out, in Hollywood.

Hagman's marriage, ended only in death, outlasted the enviable marriages of George and Gracie Allen, Jimmy and Gloria Stewart and (Princess) Grace Kelly. I had to look it up, but Stiller and Meara were married the same year as Hagman (1954), which is impressive not only for Hollywood, but the general population as well.
