I was waiting in line at one of the office supply chains, the hired help was looking in back for some item I wanted (I think it was the Iomega 500 gb for Mac, it’s a beautiful drive, and tough as nails it turns out, I wish they’d kept making ‘em) and the geek in line behind me was carrying a hotspot in his pocket, and was using an iPod Touch (which is really just a small tablet computer, Apple tested the waters with that one IMHO) with VoIP software and a virtual phone keypad to have his business line on him at all times. Made a short story a little long, but basically, I’m sure what you’re trying is possible. I’ve been giving some thought to running a sort of in-house proxy server as a gateway, so the hotspot only knows about one device, and everything wired or otherwise would just be administered in the proxy. It has been working off a fast switch, but this morning I couldn’t connect, and didn’t have time to fiddle.
