Padre Island National Seashore remains nearly as wild as it did 50 years ago

Outside of Padre Island, there is not a beach in the country where visitors can drive for more than 60 miles without seeing a utility line, light pole, street, boardwalk, commercial or residential structure.

Padre Island National Seashore represents the longest stretch of undeveloped barrier island in the world. And 66 of the park's 70 miles of beach are open to vehicle traffic. It has been that way long before Padre Island National Seashore was established 50 years ago this year.

Most of the park remains as wild as it has ever been.

Horine said the national seashore stands out as major player in the region's nature tourism scheme, which represents 54 percent of the area's overall tourism. Non-Texans ranked the park among the top 10 Texas attractions in a survey by the Texas Department of Economic Development and Tourism. The American Bird Conservancy has designated the seashore a Globally Important Bird Area. It helps that Corpus Christi for years has been recognized as America's Birdiest City and is part of Texas Parks & Wildlife's Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail, providing further recognition as a birding destination.

By this time a project to establish the national seashore as a secondary nesting site for the endangered Kemp's ridley sea turtle was beginning to generate quite a following thanks to local and national media attention.

Here are some pics I took around the area:

Picture I took of a church on Shoreline, Corpus Christi, with a beautiful statue of Jesus in front, facing the bay, entitled, 'It is I', by Kent Ulberg.

Years ago the city had a proposal to erect a giant statue of Jesus (Corpus Christi means Body of Christ) downtown on the hill, (similiar to the one in Brazil-which would have put CC on the map), but Libs rejected it as not PC, I suppose.

Corpus Christi is supposed to be the ‘Windy City’ not Chicago.
It’s not windy here most of the time.

We lived in Corpus Christi for a while in 1964 when I was 4. We went to Padre Island several times and I vaguely recall one shack falling down and no people. We had the place to ourselves usually. I saw some deer down the beach. That’s about all I remember of it.

Then in the 80s I saw spring break on TV on South Padre or somewhere and there were hotels and people and riots and clubs. Wow.

It’s good to know the old quiet place is still quiet.

Yeah, we are always getting bit by big snakes and spiders! They are everywhere! Even in your bed! Don’t walk around without spot lights on at night in Texas. Big snakes and spiders is the real reason why Texans carry around guns. It’s terrible. : (

Thank you for the compliment. I am now using it for my desktop image on my computer.

One morning, a year or so ago, I did see a porpoise playing and jumping out past the breakers. Really cool.

Come on back down it is still a great little beach town. A lot more construction but still nice.

Well, as Liberals hate guns, they had best not go to Texas with all those snakes. They’ll be eaten alive. If you can’t aim and shoot multiple attacking snakes at a time, you are a gonner in Texas. If don’t have a machine gun, the snakes pull up a chair and demand gritts every morning! That is why EVERYONE in Texas has to participate in the annual rattle snake round ups!

Texans wear those cowboy hats cuz spiders will nest in their hair if they don’t. And you seen those great big silver belt buckles they wear? If they don’t put them on, the spiders nest in their belly buttons. They collect belly button lint to make their massive nests! Lordy, big enough nests to capture a three year old. That’s the main reason Texans wear those strange hats and big buckles!

Did you hear about the liberal from California who lost his bedroom slippers to a family of Texas poisonous spiders! His feet nearly froze off. I heard his wife went out to get in the car for work one morning and snakes were all over the front and back seats. Anyway, I would not move to Texas if I were a liberal.
