A police investigation is under way, after a man suspected of shoplifting from a local Walmart died during his confrontation with store employees.
According to a police report obtained by Channel 2 Action News, the incident happened at the Walmart on Fairington Road in Lithonia. The police report said that about 1:30 a.m. Sunday, a middle aged man was caught shoplifting two DVD players.
He exited the front door of the store and three employees caught him in the parking lot, where a physical altercation took place while they detained him.
When police arrived, they found the employees on top of the man. The officer put the man in handcuffs and said he noticed there was no resistance from him.
The officer had the employees get off the man, and noticed the man was unresponsive and bleeding from his nose and mouth. Paramedics came and transported the man to DeKalb Medical-Hillandale Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The police report said one of those Walmart employees had placed the man in a choke hold, but the cause and manner of death will be determined by a medical examiner.

His relatives just got rich.
At least he died doing what he loved!
Cold ... but true. lol
“The police report said one of those Walmart employees had placed the man in a choke hold,”
I love Walmart.
Yes they did. From industry experience, I’m doubting Wal-Mart allows their AP/LP employees to detain shoplifters out of the store.
lol.
whoa.
true
Some of the commentary attached to various articles about this is downright unkind. Some comments, (slightly redacted):
“Walmart be killin n******!”
(followed by)
“Boycott Walmart until they stop hasslin shoplifters!”
“Another dead Obama voter”
“DVD players be reparations!”
“I ain’t stealin nothin else fum dem if dey chokes you!”
I was kidding with a door greeter at a Wal-Mart when the alarm went off as I was leaving. I showed her my receipt then told her I was tempted to one day take off running just for the fun of it.
She told me they were told to just let the person go if they didn’t want to show their receipt.
These employees were apparently trained in a different way.
The majority of Walmart employees I see don’t appear capable of engaging in such strenuous activity.
Possibly one of them laid on and crushed him.
Liability insurance policies of most stores result in their telling employees not to personally tackle a thief. It might be that Walmart, being as big as it is, doesn’t even bother having an insurance policy. It’s cheaper for them to handle such affairs in house.
There oughtta be a warning sign on the front door:
“There be rednecks here and they will rassle you down if you steal something! So don’t try it!”
Wal-mart has the incident on camera....the truth will come out...
Lithonia? I didn't know Walmart had stores abroad?
That would be Lithuania, kitty.
Now that TV stations and newspapers are on the web, one would think they would title their location (in this case, Georgia). The main article lead-in does show Georgia, though. Lithonia, Georgia.
Ah! Looks like an airline to me
Oh. Lighting fixtures.
You’re presuming they can read.
Lithonia. Populated, it appears, by the Amish.
