Sounds ideal.
My pick would be a Smith Airweight. Not sure if they're still in production though.

I would suggest dropping by a firing range and trying guns to see what you can handle.

Most good firing ranges have a wide selection of guns.

I carry a Glock, that being said, Glocks are not for the inexperienced.
They do NOT have a thumb safety.
The only safety is on the trigger itself, which is not a safety at all in the regular sense.
Would recommend a 9mm compact with a thumb safety, loaded with Remington Golden Saber rounds.
Rugar may be a good choice, I have Rugar revolvers and they are excellent, but I do not own a Ruger compact semi-auto 9mm.
Recoil is not bad at all with a 9mm and 9mm Golden Sabers will do the damage of a standard .45.

If you want “small” get a hat pin.

If she’s not going to the range every other week, forget the semi-auto.

Forget the light weight Ti stuff, because she’ll want to get the weapon back on target for the second shot.

.38 S&W w as long a barrel length as you’re willing to carry, up to 4”.

Practice & train with a qualified instructor.....NOT the person you’re sleeping with!
Emotions affect the way instruction is received and delivered.

(imho) it should fit her hand ... as a hand in a glove. This requires the lady hold it in her hand and she is comfortably able to grip the handle and reach the trigger. That would kind of spoil the surprise angle though. If she is not comfortable holding the firearm, she will not carry it. Buy a gift certificate, if offered, and let her find something she is comfortable with. Or buy her a machine gun. It doesn't matter if she hits what she is aiming at; the sound alone will scare most intruders off that come into her space.

Home defense,I am afraid right now.If I had a gun I would feel safer. The police are keeping an eye and said things should be OK and have the names of people who showed up at my house 2 times. One time after dark to say they wanted to do construction work.I need a gun.

S&W M&P .22 LR

http://www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product4_750001_750051_785503_-1_757765_757752_757751_ProductDisplayErrorView_Y#

Load it with CCI Stingers.

I carry it every day. Light, accurate, minimal recoil, zero muzzle rise. Instead of 1 shot put 12 in the same spot.

There are a large number of guns which would be fine for home defense. I think the two most important things to consider are reliability and ease of use in the middle of the night.

One gun which you will never go wrong with is a Sig P-226. They seem to fit just about everyone’s hand and are dead stone cold reliable.

The same could be said for a lot of others but the Sig is pretty common.

Now that I think about it, there is a Walther PP in .380 about two feet from my bed right now. It would be about as good in .32 or even .22LR. About six feet away is a Winchester Defender pump loaded with seven 00 Buckshot tho about any shot size would work.

I would prefer a Remnington 1187 automatic but the Winchester is tactically as good as any.

When my wife and I were first married, I had a Browning Hi-Power but when a drunk tried to break in one night, the gun I grabbed without thinking was a Ruger 10/22 rifle. I probably should have grabbed the Browning but the Ruger was about as good as anything. I can remember confronting the guy and wondering if I would have to shoot him or if I should just punch him in the chest with the barrel as he was not really physically large enough to threaten me even if he attacked.

Yep!

S&W .38 w 4 in. barrel.

Get it in steel so you can get 2nd shot on target.
(weight reduces recoil)
