CANTON, Ohio -

A northeast Ohio man caught on video apparently making fun of a young girl with cerebral palsy has been sentenced to a month in jail.

William Bailey, 43, was sentenced to the maximum sentence after pleading no contest Tuesday to reduced misdemeanor charges of disorderly conduct and aggravated menacing, court officials said.

Bailey was caught on cellphone video at a school bus stop making fun of how the 10-year-old disabled girl walks. The video was then widely disseminated on the Internet and local TV news, the (Canton) Repository reported

Not to pick nits, but WTF? ‘aggravated menacing’?!

It’s true there is nothing you can’t do w/out getting locked-up if they so chose.

Now we can go to jail for mocking someone?

Yes, picking ona disable kid is reprehensible. No quarter given on that point. This guy deserves to get his butt kicked.

But jail? For hurt feelings? I am not sure that is a direction we want to go.

I actually don’t have a problem jailing any grown man who does this to any 10 yr old let alone a disabled child.

Although justice would be him getting his butt severely kicked.

Idicates judicial system is f’ed up and based on touchy feely BS.
Guy thought it was a joke and obviously defended himself and lost.
Should a got an attny.
This judge needs to be removed, sentence appealed and town sued for some type of false incarceration.

“But jail? For hurt feelings? I am not sure that is a direction we want to go”

This would not have happened 50 years ago. A man harassing a child would have been confronted by other men, and that man would have been dealt with. Knowing this, the harassment would not likely have occurred.

Our society has changed so much that anyone coming to the defense of the child may themselves have been attacked (verbally or violently) and with no assurance they would be backed up. Or, if someone did step in, they may have been arrested or even sued.

Society is slowly evolving to where the only real punishment available is being arrested and sent to jail.

We once had a social compact with each other, obey societies rules or the community will deal with it.

Civil societies can exist only when the majority understand and obey the rules of living together. We are no longer a civil society.

Unfortunately the law is a poor substitute for individuals not doing bad things.

Our popular culture praises and rewards bad behavior so we should not be surprised when people behave badly.

As CIB-173RDABN put it so well, if someone were stupid enough to do this 50 years ago they’d get their butt kicked.

Today that would lead to your arrest and jailing. So what other punishment can be applied to people who do stuff like this?

Behavior this can scar children for life. He should have been charged with child abuse.

He’s a disgusting crud, but you can’t throw people in jail for that reason alone. Making fun of a crippled child is about as low as it gets, but it still does not qualify for getting thrown in the slammer.

“...if someone were stupid enough to do this 50 years ago they’d get their butt kicked.”

Fifty years ago, this child might well have been locked up in an institution. Things have changed, thank G-d.
I saw this video on Fox this morning. It was despicable. There is such a thing as mental abuse and mental assault and this was damn sure it. I would have broken his kneecaps and he would have walked funny for the rest of his life.

WELL SAID!! Applicable in so many other arenas of bad behaviour as well. To examine the other side of the coin.... “we” have allowed seemingly normal acts to be CRIMINALIZED to the extent that if by-standers DO act...they are usually liable, and sued, and end up the loosers. So, who can blame them for NOT stepping in? I agree with you 100%, but that’s how a lot of people think, and I can’t blame them.

If I was the judge, no jail.

However, I would sentence the guy to be handcuffed and leg-shackeled, in a soundproof and locked room, for 59 minutes and 59 seconds.

With the girl's dad, a blowtorch, and a pair of pliers.

He’s a douche-bag all right, but deserve jail time. Hell, no. He should be ridiculed for his insensitivity. Of course, you can see where this will go; this is something the left will love to utilize. Take for example Susan Rice. That could be constituted as “mocking” or hate speech or what have you, and BOOM—off to jail. It will become a way to silence critics.

Jail, for a first offense at least, might be a bit to harsh. The guy's a scumbag for sure and some sort of punishment should have been forthcoming. It's the parents’ job to comfort the girl and assure her that the guy was 100% wrong.

"It will become a way to silence critics."

With this one sentence you got right to the root of the judge's actions and its ultimate multipication effects.

Anything else is beanbag.

It's Alinsky and anti-Constitutional all the way.

There is a difference between abhorrent behaviour and criminal behaviour. This man is juvenile and cruel. But unless he was threatening the girl, he did nothing criminal.

This is a scary reminder that just below the surface of our justice system is mob rule. Do something that people find disgusting and loathsome (like this man did) and society will brand you a criminal (ie, take your freedom).
