Kokomo — General Motors Components Holdings, LLC in Kokomo has said they will let go all temp workers Friday.
“We are releasing our temps,” said Kent Eaton, personnel director for GMCH Kokomo. “Its basically based on business volumes, which have decreased late in the year. It makes business sense to adjust the workforce to meet the needs of the business.”
Eaton said less than 50 workers have been informed of their impending loss of employment.
He said GM doesn’t have any additional employment cuts planned in the immediate future.
“There are no future projections that this would be an ongoing event,” Eaton said. “We wish them all well. They’ve done a great job for us.”
Chris Waymire, president of the Business and Professional Exchange chapters in Kokomo and Lafayette, said there are many resources for displaced workers in Kokomo. The BPE helps primarily white-collar workers without jobs build skills and re-enter the work force. Meetings are held at Inventrek each Tuesday morning at 8:30 a.m. Waymire said he’ll be saving seats for any displaced workers from GM.
“All of them would be welcome,” he said. “BPE is certainly an option for them.”
He also suggested workers visit the WorkOne office in Kokomo for training, resume preparation, interviewing and job search skill development. He said many workers are likely eligible for unemployment insurance and other services that WorkOne can connect them with.
“The folks at GM are well-skilled and desirable as employees,” Waymire said. “They should certainly check [these programs] out.”
