One of these ran in front of our car three weeks ago. My family had been watching him play in the field near their home. Gorgeous. Bet it’s just the winter coat. (We think he was why my sister’s cat disappeared four weeks ago. MMMMMM...cat for lunch.)

Looks like a Red Wolf or Red Wolf hybrid.

They are all genus Canis and theoretically could breed with dogs if they were so inclined.

Coydogs are quite common and have been known to domesticate fairly well but not to the point a pure dog does.

That’s a coyote, and most coyotes are not very afraid of humans unless they have been hunted.

So, from your post, it sounds like you are tracking unusually large Asians in the woods south of Lansing. Are you sure thats legal?

They're a lot rarer north of Lansing so a special permit is required and you can only get it if you can prove they're a nuisance.

Coydogs are a myth that seems plausible on first glance. Various people have studied this and all the coydogs turned out to be regular wild canines or their crosses (genetic studies). Although the two species can cross, the studies concluded that the problem was that dogs and their crosses don’t provide for pups in a way that ensures survival in the wild.

Here in Pennsylvania, the first eastern coyotes were thought to be coydogs but they turned out to be wolf/coyote hybrids.

In the south,Red wolves are also hybrids. There is no evidence that they ever were anything else.

Looks pretty healthy. If I didn’t know better I’d say it once was somebody’s pet since it has no fear of the guy taking the picture.

Gee, that’s strange, I knew a guy who owned one of those “myths”. Coyote made one of his bitches pregnant, she had one pup that looked exactly like a coyote, was evil tempered and finally had to be put down when it was about 3 years old. Nice to know it was just a myth however.

The myth is that they’re in the wild.
