Increased Airline Security Has Killed Far More Americans Than 9/11

Businessweek points out a staggering study suggesting that the delays and hassle caused by post-9/11 TSA airport screening procedures encouraged travelers to go by car rather than the far safer choice of flying – resulting in thousands of extra road fatalities which would not have otherwise occurred, a death toll dwarfing that of the attacks on the Twin Towers:

Created in the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, the Transportation Security Administration has largely outlived its usefulness. These days, the TSA’s major role appears to be to make plane trips more unpleasant.

I never fly anymore. I drive 800 miles when I want to visit the kids instead. I would wind up on the news when I told a TSA goon to kiss my ass.

On trips under 1,000 miles, I always go by car. If I’m going from the Los Angeles area TO San Francisco, Las Vegas or Phoenix, I can get there from my home faster by car than I can by driving to the airport, going through security, and then flying there.

There are a lot of annoyances in flying in addition to the TSA. The TSA is the biggest, but not the only PITA when flying. If your entire family is going it is cheaper to drive than to fly (if you're going less than 800 miles anyway), and you can bring some of your defensive items without the risk of their being stolen or confiscated.

On a related topic I actually encountered a polite friendly TSA agent in the PBI airport. No I really did. This is something that I have NOT seen in the ATL airport.

I never fly anymore and increased security is only a small part of the problem. Surly airline employees, tiny cramped seats on tiny cramped planes are my biggest complaints. I used to say if I could drive someplace in 4 hours I’ll drive. Now it’s anywhere in the Northern Hemisphere!

look at the rectangular pixelization that surrounds the “airplane”

Along with the edges of every other item in the picture.
What's your point?

Wanna have some fun? Use crtl + to enlarge this photo as much as possible. Then look at the rectangular pixelization that surrounds the “airplane”. Neat huh?

It does the same thing around the edges of most of the buildings, too.

Cool ... there's rectangular pixelization around most of the sharp edges in that picture. See the rectangular pixelization around the "building" to the left of the "airplane"? Neat, huh?

Lossy compression in a JPEG image is noticeable if you look for it.

In spite of overwhelming evidence government operations will fail.

IN the Cincinnati airport, a lot of the little old TSA guys are Shriners. Don't know about the rest of the public, but if you are a patient at the Shriners hospital there, they will know who you are and speed you through. At least that is that is what happened to my daughter.
But then you get to Atlanta...

When was the last time you boarded a commercial airliner? What type aircraft was it? How wide was the seat (in inches?) What was the seat pitch (in inches)?

Look at the three largest buildings on the left of the image ... the bldg with the green roof and the bldgs immediately left and right of it. Look at the "bell" logo on the bldg immediately in front of the burning WTC.

If you're some kind of 9/11 "Truther", please go F@ck off and die.

Are you insane? Do you dare to imply that an airplane didn’t fly into the Tower? If so, please log off and never come back to FR.

That's how digital zoom works.

Well, I have the luxury of a 21-inch monitor, and if I zoom in the two spires on the left are most pronounced, but the edges (vertical and horizontal) of every building seen against the sky has pixelization to one degree or another.

You imply that the image was photoshopped because of those artifacts.
I think it's just a result of the magnification process, since it exists all over the image.

“What was the seat pitch (in inches)?”

What was the cloth covering the seat made of?
