A new species of fish has been named after President Barack Obama by the researchers who discovered it.
The freshwater fish has distinctive bright orange and blue colours and is generally found in fast-flowing rivers around America.
It is one of five new species of darter - the smallest member of the perch family - to be discovered in recent months.
The remaining four species have been named after three other presidents and one vice-president.
The tiny fish - which are normally under 50mm in length - have been spotted by researchers from Geosyntec Consultants and Saint Louis University in waters in Arkansas, Kansas, Kentucky, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Tennessee.
Geosyntec Consultants researcher Steve Layman told The Guardian: 'We chose President Obama for his environmental leadership, particularly in the areas of clean energy and environmental protection, and because he is one of our first leaders to approach conservation and environmental protection from a more global vision.'
The other leaders were also picked for their environmental credentials.
Teddy Roosevelt was saving vast areas of wilderness by creating national parks. Jimmy Carter was picked for his humanitarian work in his post-presidential career.
Bill Clinton was honoured for his wilderness preservation and finally Al Gore, the sole vice-president on the list, for his environmental campaigning and raising raising awareness of global warming through projects such as his documentary An Inconvenient Truth.

A better fish to name after Obama would be the lamprey ... lampreys are parasitic feeders and just plain suck.
Not all scientists are hopeless, toadying Democrats ... but some sure are!
i thought jimmy carter has an aggressive aquatic rabbit named after him...
half puffer/half sucker
I’m hard at work looking for a new species of weasel.
I don’t think it looks very much like Barry.
I was expecting it to be black and white with a yellow stripe down it’s back.
Do you know the difference between Obama and a catfish?
One is a scum sucking bottom dweller and the other is a fish.
So the fish is a homo which mates with a wookie fish also called a beard fish and has no records of where it is from and is kept as a pet by the jarret fish?
No—this one is a good one. The fish uses its color as its primary defense mechanism. That suits Obama perfectly.
how appropriate... and like other fish, this one probably excels at evasive action and is real slimey so its difficult to catch and hold.
We have a winner!
black, poisonous and sucks the life out of white fish.
The “scientists” are just suckups.
If they ever find a fish that has never done an ounce of work in its life, that hates the big fish that work hard and honestly, and tries to steal the food that the big fish catch, that lies and deceives a lot, THAT fish can be called the BHO fish.
Invasive species. Get rid of it.

Is there a dam project that needs holding up in one of these states?

Just how does getting paid observing some fish make the guy a ‘scientist?’
I hope it’s a species going over the brink to extinction.
Sorry, Marine........this cannot be the serpent named after Obama. Obama only squirts RED ink.
