Didn’t know that. Good news.

You could also try this approach...

Dear Father-in-Law,

Please forgive me for voting for a RINO for President. I’m not sure what came over me. It’s not like most of his positions were any different than Obama - pro-choice, pro-gay, Romneycare, etc. Really, how could you be disappointed. As a Romney supporter and with you being an Obama supporter, we came really close to voting for the same person anyway. You picked the democrat version of those views. I picked the GOPe version of those views.

Anyway, in the end, we both love your daughter. Plus, I’m assuming you want to keep seeing the grandkids.

Kindest Regards,
Your son-in-law

Let him dis-own you....they can say goodbye to their daughter and grandchildren as well.

Fight fire, with fire.

This is the only thing that gets through to them. Tell your wife that under these terms they are no longer welcome in your home, nor will YOUR children be permitted to see them. You will not have their minds polluted by such a bitter and demented person. THis shoudl include your Mother-in-Law as well. Zero contact. No birthday parties, gifts will be returned unopened. The cutoff must be absolute and without mercy.

Explain this to your wife. If they want to play this game then they have much more to lose than you do. They will die in a few years...sans a relationship with your children.

Conservatism comes from privation. You conserve to preserve what you have. This makes the approach to success much more stellar and able to create drag for others, pulling them along, too, as the conservative rises.

‘Liberalism’ comes from profit only. Having more than enough money and time available, you can go about busybodying whoever and whatever you like. The presumption of power comes from that very position of wealth, as though you act from noblesse oblige. In this sense, liberalism is absent morals by definition because it is based on a vacuum of spare energy.

The Dickensian, avaricious financier preys upon individuals as surely as the greedy, lustful glory hound whose idle hands shelter only those in thrall to them.

Believe me, I would have few qualms about doing that. I'm trying to be an adult for the sake of my son though. But I did tell my wife not to worry; they won't tolerate being away from their grandson, and they have to go through me to get to him. Bwahahahah!!!

I found it rather surprising as well, but the same poll found that black women in that same age group went for Obama against Romney 98-1, so it seems well calibrated. I don't think conservatives should "pander to blacks". I do think that if there were an honest debate within the black community between conservatism and progressivism, conservatism would take a substantial percentage of the support. The trick is to find ways for that debate to occur.

I think your tone is respectful and caring and friendly.
That said, the letter is entirely too long.
It should beget been more concise. Brief even. Then, if he responded you could have said a little more.

Remember. You cannot control another person’s decision or choices.
If he does suspend you, it is his choice and doing.
Don’t react. Respond just like you are (but with a whole lot fewer words) being friendly, caring and loving. That, will be your decision and response. And he can’t control it or you.
God bless you and your good efforts.

Your could have just said this:

Aye, fight and you may die. Run, and you'll live... at least a while. And dying in your beds, many years from now, would you be willin' to trade ALL the days, from this day to that, for one chance, just one chance, to come back here and tell our enemies that they may take our lives, but they'll never take... OUR FREEDOM!

Unless you're pandering by adopting certain positions only because they appeal to one group or another, I don't think it needs to be either/or.

I don’t knowingly allow Democrats in my home. Democrats walk into the polling place on election day and vote for big government to confiscate more tax money... from their neighbors, friends, and even complete strangers. I find that kind of behavior so rude and boorish that I could never have an ounce of respect for anybody who votes Democrat. I certainly wouldn’t trust them in my home.

I am very fortunate that my family is civilized and courteous to others and so there are no issues here.

You should really tell your rude, selfish father-in-law to do everybody a favor and go have a happy heart attack.

FRegards,
LH

Your advice (and I use the term loosely) should come with the number of a divorce attorney, because the net result would be that she’d take the kids and be gone in the morning. FIL would enjoy a good chuckle, when the poor guy had to come to his house with his tail between his legs to pick his kids up every other weekend. Dear Abby you ain’t.

I went through this with my father-in-law.

I made it clear to him that I was in charge of my family...not him and I don’t take kindly to intimidation or threats.

After the birthday gift for my oldest son was returned to sender, my mother-in-law was in tears on the phone with me and I calmly explained the situation to her.

Within days of my conversation with my mother-in-law, my father-in-law was at my door quite contrite and scared. I sternly looked him in the eye and told him man to man to never, ever, pull crap like that on me again.

I am to the right of Attila the Hun in economic freedom.
That said, I actually favor Romneycare since it is 78 pages and tackles nothing outside of Healthcare. Obamacare OTOH is 2800 pages and will affect every facet of our lives.

But some people do not bother reading the details and make off hand comparisons. That is a solid proof of a non-thinking, shallow brained individual.

The best part of Romneycare is that it forces the free loaders to share the burden of ever escalating cost of healthcare in US.

What this country needs is more economic freedom, less regulations and restrictions on business owners. I am guessing you are not a business owner. That is why you can not see the difference between Obama & Romney in their approach to business owners.

Our prosperity is diminished by restrictions to economic freedoms, not forcing the freeloaders to buy health insurance.

Conservatism comes from privation...

Some of the best words I've ever read on Free Republic. And there will be plenty of privation ahead.

In fact, IMHO, the most conservative groups of all time include the old Soviet Politburo, China's Communist Party and the mullahs in every nation in the Middle East.

American "liberalism" will quickly lead to the WORST form of conservatism.

Sounds like Romney met a few more of your pragmatic criteria (e.g. better on the economy) than Obama. Knowing that America as we know it will end regardless of who we voted for may lessen the differences between you and your FIL which are not all that great looking at the bigger picture. As a father you ought to realize that there is more to marriage than cohabitation and having better looking pieces of paper than power of attorney and hospital visitation rights. Marriage is infinitely more than that.

It would be interesting to think about what you would think about the past election had Hillary won the nomination instead of your preferred "outsider" BHO. BHO was not just an outsider, he has at least moral support from enemies of America. Hillary on the other hand would likely have lost the sycophant media once she got hit with a few Clintonesque scandals. All of BHO's scandals have been papered over with media lies. So we are stuck with him unravelling capitalism one section at a time (war on coal, union giveaways, etc) instead of replacing Hillary with a republican version of Hillary.

I do appreciate the thoughtfulness of your approach to politics, but I believe it lacks a bigger picture perspective and perhaps even a firm moral grounding (although I also lack that grounding). Hopefully you will have some success in fixing your personal life and that we can all survive until we get a leader that can bring America back to its roots and restore it as the beacon and savior of the free world.

You seem to be well informed about everything except Obama’s Marxist background, associations and statements, all well documented at the time, all of which trumps your (or anyone’s) noble excuses for voting for him in 2008. You helped elect a little wannabe stalin, friend of a domestic terrorist, parishioner of an America-whitey hating preacher. What did you expect? Seriously. The man had declared that the U.S. Constitution was a flawed document that granted the citizens what he and his Marxist pals “negative liberties”, and that he was going to fix that. Are you disappointed that he hasn’t (yet) managed to turn this country into a gulag without those pesky “negative liberties”?

Best wishes on handling your dispute with your father-in-law, an uninformed liberal like yourself.

You picked the democrat version of those views. I picked the GOPe version of those views.

You said it a lot more succinctly but that was my thought. The FIL voted presumably out of race loyalty and/or progressivism. The SIL voted out of loyalty to the cause which has more than a hint of progressivism.

I am nearly 60 years old. Here is my advice.

Don’t waste your time with Idiots and Fools.

How many heartbeats did you waste trying to explain what every rational person already knows? In fact, I do not agree with some of your points because it seems to me that you are capitulating to him looking for some common ground.

As a Conservative, you and he have NO common ground.

Your Email to him comes off as groveling to me. Granted, I could just be in a sour mood, but you owe your F-I-L no Apology for your Convictions. You are raising his Grandchildren and your F-I-L gives not one iota for their future.

F him and F all his sycophant Obama loving Family and Friends. You and your Family are better of without his poison in your lives.

Change your Email and Phone Number and move on.

Obama Supporters make Useful Idiots look like Einstein.
They are beyond redemption and have no capability of rational thought.

Now, you may think I am a fool or idiot (or both) after reading my thoughts on your Vanity. If so, I understand.
My patience for all things Obama is at its end.
