Word For The Day, Monday, 12/3/12
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
1. grossly or obscenely abusive or defamatory 2. characterized by gross or obscene humour
[C16: from Latin scurrīlis derisive, from scurra buffoon] Synonyms 1. vituperative, insulting, offensive. 2. vulgar
Etymology: "using such language as only the licence of a buffoon can warrant" [Johnson], 1576, from scurrile "coarsely joking" (1508, implied in scurrility), from L. scurrilis "buffoonlike," from scurra "fashionable city idler," later "buffoon." According to Klein, "an Etruscan loan-word."
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.
The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....
Here is my example with WFTD.
It is the season for atheists to loudly mount their scurrilous attacks on Christmas. Buffoons is a good word for them.

No pushing at the door please!
Good morning. I was out past my “bedtime” at a wedding last night. I can’t believe I am up this morning. I am feeling sluggishly smug.
.......at least his minions are happy with this, while we approach the fiscal cliff.
I supposes Syracuse would have thought it scurrilous had they been “passed over” for Pitt in the Pinstripe Bowl.
I still think they missed a chance for a great bowl game.
September eleventh, 2012, a date on which the leader of the free world showed his hindmanship and scurrilously scurried away from responsibility like a squirrel scampering among the scattered leaves.
This one is too easy. Scurrilous: brings to mind the behavior of the Obama Administration both before and after the recent election.
Your village looks like a Currier and Ives print!
The fiscal cliff looming is perilous
But Obama’s solutions are nebulous
Deflect, cheat, and lie
Is how he gets by
Each attack on republicans, scurrilous
seriously? that’s not photoshopped? good grief. A+++
what were the possibilities? i didn’t follow it. I know SU is going to the Pinstripe bowl, i thought Pitt was going to that bowl, but xshub said SU is playing WVU?
A father and daughter in their holiday finery headed to Cotillion for the Holly Ball.
now i KNOW that’s got to be photoshopped or airbrushed, bc i KNOW upstate NY! LOL!!!
A+++ and he’s getting away with it, which is what drives me absolutely insane.
A+++ and there is no mistaking that he is her father, bc she looks exactly like him!!
And is there any mistaking that that is Richmond, VA. Where else in this country would there be a program called “Cotillion” where 13 year old girls wear white gloves?
During the Primaries, I had my own theories as to the origins of the scurrilous attacks on the more conservative Republican Candidates.
that was a fine looking birthday cake, though i couldn’t figure out why it said David and not SOOTHER ; ) did you have a good bday? i enjoyed myself on your bday. The girls and i went to King of Prussia to shop, had lunch there, and then went on down to the U of Delaware for xsboy’s game. They were stomped by the Blue Hens, 7-0, but it was still good to be able to see one of his games. Avg age of player on the DE team is 22, since their freshmen have generally played two years of junior hockey before going to college, so they were all huge and way older than the SU squad. the hens also won the championship last year, so it wasn’t terribly surprising. it was a 5 hour bustrip each way for the team. We sat a few rows behind the SU bench and had to inhale that stench for the duration of the game which is three 20 min periods, just like the NHL.
Yes, SU plays WVU. Pitt is going to the same bowl for the third year in a row.
The Pinstripe Bowl had the rights to the 4th place Big East team (or to pick 4th, anyway). There was talk that they might choose #5 Pitt to get a Backyard Brawl Bowl. There’s a storyline and you know the teams will be up for a contest. No need to manufacture hype.
But the bowl probably thought they’d sell more tickets to a NY team and wanted to stay in their pecking order.
I think it sucks, but it’s their choice.
Kids at xsbaby’s HS do Cotillion, so it’s not restricted to Richmond, it’s a suthren thing i guess. Being from Pittsburgh, i never saw the point of it : )
i love a backyard brawl! i wish it had been Pitt.
and Gonzaga beat Georgetown Prep in hockey on Friday, in a backyard brawl of sorts. that is always good to see, as Prep is a DESPISED opponent.
The purpose is to teach them how to behave like ladies and gentlemen in Jr. High. I don’t know if it works, but it is a nice program. That young lady’s older brother loved the experience and was crushed when he wasn’t chosen to be one of the “older sponsors” when he got to HS. They could choose 8 older boys, and there were 21 applications. So, he is throwing himself into marching band where he is the percussionist extroidinaire. For a shy kid, I would have never predicted it.
The percussion section is on the sideline while the rest of the band is on the field, and he is under the spotlight when they perform. He “dances” when he plays the marimba and has been the “hit” of the football half time show all year. Saturday he played the clashing cymbals as they led the annual Christmas parade. This from the kid who said he’d never march and had to be coerced to join the program. I credit Cotillion for his new found self confidence.
Yes, I like the Care Britt from Costa Rica. My dad still orders it from time to time (he is on their mailing list from one of the trips he and my mom made to Costa Rica). I also like Tres Rios coffee from Costa Rica. It is always good to get some that was obtained fresh there and brought back home.
very nice pic tioga.
Always remember that if you do your Christmas
shopping early, you invariably scurry less as
that holiday approaches.
Yes. Mind Boggling to say the least.
A++++ he wants to go over it.
and i am trying to do just that ; ) A+++
It’s everywhere, and i simply cannot bear to listen to it. A+++
Love the picture-truly charming.
That is beautiful ti -
I have a bid to deliver in a few minutes-I’m not enthused about it-I’m sure the customer is a scammer, but I’ll be polite because I know the value of customer service.
The alarm that is raised again
About a terrible fiscal fall
Is now a panic button to use
To hold the masses in thrall
All the scurrilous rhetoric-
Obama’s minions blowing smoke
Is a call for endless spending
And to them its just a joke
Let them crash and burn this time
Things are already so damn bad-
Leaving the rats stuck in the mud
Is much better than what we had
I’m having 70’s deja vu-I probably listened to too much old heavy rock over the weekend-I’m off to see the bogus customer...
Sad but true and well done
Good, that scurrilous beast is completely polarizing.
I had to stop on the way out the door to tell you you are not alone-I was born cynical, and in my former life as a casemanager, I knew several “homeless” people who hung around near our offices, figuring the nice casemanager(s)at the worker’s comp place would give them goodies. It never occured to them that in that line of work, we were trained to spot scammers.
Only one of them was really “homeless”-the others lived from shelter to shelter, moving so they would not be familiar to those they took money from-they always wanted money and were not pleased with the other stuff. They only sold any clothes you gave them, and many bought drugs with the money, usually bathtub crank, crack or such.
There are no homeless out here-just what we call mountain men (and women) who live in remote and tumbledown places in the forest, and are hermits. Neighbors and church members check on them and bring them stuff which they really use-different world from the city.
Back to back generations of marrying 1/2 Italian men will remove any semblance of English, Irish, and Swedish genes (or blue eyes) in the grandchildren! LOL.
I’m 100% Eastern European. All four grandparents came off the boat. I married 100% Italian man whose grandparents were also off the boat. All three of my kids have my green eyes instead of his brown ones.
I does have it’s charm. Thanks.
LOL....upstate NY is quite beautiful......it’s the long frozen snowy winters I detest....and the libs and the taxes!
Thanks, it’s hard to believe it’s been over a year since you visited.
That must have been some boat. ;-)
"There be a lot of scurrilous in my trees"
Thanks. We have our version of mountain men here (usually referred to as woodchucks around here) and I have been in the back of the ambulance with a few. Too close for comfort.
Thanks. I didn’t realize so many would like it as much as I did.
