NASA Debunks Doomsday, Apocalypse Prophecies (Video)

As December 21, 2012 grows near, the hysteria concerning the end of the Maya calendar is coming to a head. Gullible people all over the world are stocking up on non-perishable items and preparing for an apocalyptic disaster. For scientists, though, these latest doomsday prophecies are the same thing as any prophecy – a claim without enough evidence to even be worthy of the label ‘hypothesis.’

Not everyone knows bunk when they hear it, though, so NASA recently devoted the precious time of some of its scientists to debunking the spurious claims. NASA researchers from all over the U.S. gathered in a Google Hangout to discuss prophecy, the winter solstice, and the track record of doomsday prophecies (spoiler alert: they’ve all been wrong).

Among the participants are Astrobiologist David Morrison, Asteroid Scientist Don Yeomans, Archaeoastronomer Mitzi Adams, Heliophysicist Lika Guhathakurta, and Astrophysicist Paul Hertz. The scientists methodically pick apart every silly prophecy and rumor about what disasters will happen on December 21. In particular, the group tears into the myth of the fictional planet Nibiru, which is rumored to be on a collision course with Earth.

The real question is ... what the hell is the History Channel and H2 going to talk about come December 22nd?

I work in the field of IT disaster recovery both on the planning side and the execution of DR plans. I get to talk to a LOT of people. Most right after a disaster strikes. I have NEVER heard anyone who has survived a disaster tell me that their preparations were a waste of time or that they felt stupid for prepping. I highly doubt that the people who prepped and were prepared for Sandy would be called "gullible" by their neighbors.

I really don’t see this as 4X times important than any other thread.

Our TAX dollars at work. It could only be worse if NASA were used as an organization for socio-political outreach.
Oh, wait ...

How do you prep for the actual end of the world? Other than having a shotgun, a life time of food and a nice cabin in the foothills of Olympus Mons. Better have more than half a tank of gas to get there.

It never hurts to be prepared. I am not preparing for the end of the calendar, I am preparing for 4 more years of the monster in chief.

I can see prepping for disaster, but stocking up on 30 year shelf-life food for the end of the world in less than three weeks is kinda funny. Fresh tomatoes would just about last long enough in the fridge.

Some people hate being proven wrong. Can you imagine being disappointed that the world didn’t end just because you thought you could assume the ancient Mayan calendar prediction was correct? Pathetic!

If it's the end of the world, what's the food for? Everyone will be dead.

It's true that not everyone knows bunk when they hear it -- including NASA "scientists" like James Hansen. When is NASA going to reveal both him and the junk science of anthropogenic "climate change" as the frauds they are?

I may not be preparing for the end of the Mayan calendar, but TEOTWAWKI ended on election day 2008. My prediction is we'll have more than 4 more years of either him or his minions. I hope I'm proven wrong.

TEOTWAWKI = the end of the world as we know it

Doesn’t mean the total destruction and no more planet Earth like the libs are spinning things. Before Nov. 2008, I would gripe and complain about life and government but was confident things would eventually bounce back. After Nov. 2008, no it was the minute McLame said we didn’t have to be afraid of the usurper, that my stomach wrenched and I knew we’d never be the same. Four years later, nothing I’ve seen has changed my mind.
