Those redheads got around.

I wonder how many know that Ramses the Great had red wavy hair? Originally they thought he just colored it as there was henna found on his hair but tests showed his natural hair was also red.

The Khorasan empire specialized in slaves so it should come as no surprise there is an assortment of DNA in the populations in and around the area. Even after the empire was destroyed by the Mongols the successor states in the area all traded heavily in slaves. The Quaker adventurer Josiah Harlan led an Afghan “army” against Uzbek slave raiders in the 1830’s (Harlan was Kipling’s inspiration for The Man Who Would be King - except of course Kipling’s hero was English).

I have been studying this phenomena for about eight years... A few important points. The mummification was a result of being buried in relatively shallow graves in very hot desert sand that remained hot for eons. Thus some of the best preserved mummies ever found. And as an odd note... In one woman’s grave a particular ‘grave good’ found that was a long/tall black round brimmed pointed hat made of felt - basically identical to what we call a witches hat. The style of clothing (including the cloth and weave of the cloth) was nearly identical to the same sort of items found near Halstat Austria in excavations of Celtic ruins there.

According to the Secrete History of the Mongols, Genghis Khan had red hair.

(I keep flashing on John Kerry pronouncing it "Jen-Jis".)
