The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread ... there is no telling where it will go and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
It's a cloudy day here in Missouri, but the weather is mild going to a high of 58 and low of 48 tonight. We have had sunshine and balmy days for most of the week, and I took the row covers off to let the plants breath a little more, but also to harveset the bounty.
A little lettuce and lots of Rosemary, Stevia, Lavendar, Parsley, Carrots, and a snip of tarragon. Still eating on falls tomato pickings-all are various shades of red-no green ones left.
The green bells are blooming like crazy, and already have 9 peppers of various sizes developing. My lemon tree has almost 20 little pea sized buds, but I may pinch back some of those.
I planted some more spinach and lettuce this week, but it hasn't sprouted yet. Hope the weather in your location is great and you are enjoying your gardening activities. Best Wishes, and God Bless.
Pinging the List.

We still have lettuce, turnips and turnip greens in the garden; some spinach in the gutter garden on the side of the garage. (So far, I’m not excited about the gutter garden; it’s messy, soil is of necessity shallow and production is low. It’s husband’s project, so I don’t want to hurt his feelings.) - If a person can just raise a little lettuce and a few tomatoes, they’re ahead of the game; tomato growing season has been over for us for a while.
I am awful. I snort disparagingly everytime I see this ridiculous post/thread.
How exactly, what should maybe be a letter to the grandchildren (under nine years old) becomes a regular post on FR, eating up band width, I’m so sure I don’t know.
I recommend posting in Junior Scholastic.
Sorry. I now feel better for getting this off my chest.
“I snort disparagingly everytime I see this ridiculous post/thread”
And yet you click on it each and every time?
The bamboo we planted along the driveway a few years ago is doing very well.
Isn’t stevia the plant that can be used as a sugar substitute? If so, do you dry it and grind it up or simply add as a green?

I agree with your first sentence, you are awful, but there are around 500 Freepers on the Garden Ping List, and I just recently took over posting the thread from Red Devil, so I can't really tell you how it all started.
Frankly, I recommend that you just ignore the thread, it must have been awful holding back all these years, but I am glad you feel better.
It appears that your response to stress is to spread it around and denigrate others who are enjoying a little discussion about growing their own food.
I prefer to spread a little cheer, so you have a great day and God Bless you and your family. May the Lord grant you tolerance to forbear all the many trials and tribulations that obviously come your way frequently.
Bless her little heart!
Sorry for the triple ping-I only hit the button once I swear. I also missed some typos before posting-distracted by a sick grand daughter. LOL.
Enjoy the lettuce and turnips.
What is a “gutter garden”?
Ridiculous? Really? Then why open this thread? There are many of us that enjoy gardening, and enjoy this thread- if you don’t then BYE
Carry on.
The Garden thread predates your date of joining and claims many regular participants. Have you ever heard of “When in Rome...?” At least tolerate those who do.

Decent weather, all considered.
14 of my 18 germinated apricot seeds have pushed through the surface, and are putting out their first leaves.
"But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel." 1 Timothy 5:8
G-d has provided us with seed...get those orders in. :-)
I harvested leaves all summer, brought it in and it has grown like gangbusters in and outdoors ever since. It has even been knocked off ledges and put back in the pot. It still survives.
Just harvested a bunch for #1 daughter when she was here cooking tomato sauce for lasagna. It is the geneovese(?spelling?) variety. I potted it in Mels mix and give it a dose of dynagrow once in a while, and have to give it just a little water daily cause it is so big and the pot is so small.
‘posed to freeze here next week Monday and Tuesday...
I guess my Bell’s and Jalapeno’s will be done...
I had a free range ‘mater pop up about 6 weeks ago I may put a bucket on it since it has had a couple blooms stick...I doubt I can nurse it through the Winter tho.
My Neighbor with the tiller is moving I’m gonna have to come up with a tiller...unnnggghhh.
It is vigorous, and is also evergreen. I ordered it online and it is excellent. I just wish that I had made a note of the company name, because I wouldn’t mind getting more of it. Next spring I’m going to try to either dig up part of one of the plants, or try to grow a cutting. It’s beautiful.
Greeneyes, will you add me to your ping list, please? Thanks.
I’ve got 12 cabbages growing in the winter garden, along with about 200 garlic cloves, about half of which have sprouted. This is near Raleigh, NC.
In the space between the barn and a wall I’ve got a few arugula plants and some spinach.
In a month or so I’ll start some broccoli indoors.
Yes, Stevia is the natural sweetner. I just use the dried leaves in with the dried tea leaves when I make tea. I have a little book, though that tells how to make a green powder and has some recipes.
It also gives hints for growing it. It is supposed to be perennial in zones 5-6, so this is the first year I am trying it in the outdoors garden.
Thanks for your support with the disgruntled poster, by the way.
Thanks for your support.
Yours is the first flame post, lame as it was, that I’ve ever seen in the WGT.
You should be proud.
Stevia is great stuff. Mrs. Augie uses it in her tea and has been experimenting with it as a sugar substitute for baking.
Just switch to no till. It is easier.LOL
I nursed some tomatoes and peppers through some short term freezes with row covers and straw, but you are correct about long term in the winter. Best to dig them up and bring them in.
Tomatoes won’t set fruit below a certain temperature,IIRC it may be 50 degrees.
You have been added. Welcome to our little thread. Glad to have an addition after the snorting complaint that we are too “junior” to be allowed any bandwith.
Nothing growing up here in Michigan except my Egyptian walking onions. They’ll have green shoots all through the winter. Those of you unfamiliar just google it. They root incredibly deep and stay alive all through the winter. I always have green onions and the older ones get almost as large as leeks. In the summer they form clove heads at the top that can be used for propagation or peeled and used like shallots. They do spread like crazy and have given away many clumps over the years.
Thanks for your support!
LOL...I've been around from 'square one', and I believe you might be right. Wonder if 'biggirl' has one of those blenders she can spare for a trophy?
Hey, Greeneyes...pay no attention to the person behind the curtain...
I love this thread, read it when I can even though I’m a horrible gardener...
Keep up the good work!
Carry on.
Dittoes to that.
Thanks for the quote, keep it handy in case we need it.LOL
While the local non-gardening liberals and marxists will be ordering Domino’s tonight; my wife and I will be enjoying home-made pizza featuring sauce made from (OMG) home-grown tomatoes from the garden...there’s ten bucks in our pocket for bills or whatever. :-)
Thanks for the support-I really was a bit incredulous that someone could get so worked up over a little harmless chit chat.
Stevia is something I am experimenting with too. I wanted to grow my own, because so much of what is in the stores is mixed with sucrose, dextrose, or one of the ose’s.LOL
Not to mention, a product that is much more nutritious and so much better in taste! Nothing beats home-grown herbs and vegetables!
Thanks for the reminder! Broccoli and cauliflower...
Are your tomatoes and peppers in pots?
Not to mention a food item that isn't going to be handled by/exposed to other people before I eat it...creepy; if you think about it.
Sounds like a good type of onion to have, and very versatile.

That's a good point. I didn't even think of it, but anything that is touched by human hands can carry disease, which supports the idea of washing any fruits and vegetables gotten from the grocery store or farm stand.
When we grow our own, we also know what is in the soil, and whether or not pesticides or chemicals were used.
Thanks for your support. Just keep working at it. I used to joke about having a brown thumb, cause all my house plants died.
Then I discovered this thread, square foot gardening, and Mel’s mix. Even I the famed “Doom the Bloom” gal had more successes than failures. Who Knew??????
I really enjoy having some homegrown fresh from the garden all year round now. Keep in touch.
Who may have coughed on the ‘fresh produce’ in the store or at the market? It’s ‘flu season’, after all...

That Ten dollars could also buy a handy dandy sterno stove. It folds up kinda small, and easy peasy. Perfect for the backpack or emergency coffee when the electricity goes out, which is kinda often here where we live, or 5 or 6 silver war nickles, or........fill in the blank.LOL.
Thank you for maintaining this thread. I know how much it means to all of us to have this resource, inspiration, and gardening community here on FR.
That’s exactly why I wanted to start gardening. That way I know if pesticides have been used or not(not in my case), and I don’t have to worry about E-coli on fresh spinach.
Now, I have expanded to actually become a little more self-sufficient, and it helps on the grocery bill too.
It’s all good!
Thank you for the kind words!
