Dinosaurs and Denial
New York Times ^ | Dec 7, 2012 | Charles M. Blow

Posted on 12/08/2012 6:44:00 PM PST by posterchild

Finally, Senator Marco Rubio of Florida — a Tea Party darling and possible 2016 presidential candidate — admits that dinosaurs and humans didn’t co-exist.

Last month, when GQ asked Rubio “how old do you think the Earth is?” he stammered through an answer.

“I’m not a scientist, man. I can tell you what recorded history says. I can tell you what the Bible says, but I think that’s a dispute amongst theologians.” He continued, “Whether the Earth was created in 7 days, or 7 actual eras, I’m not sure we’ll ever be able to answer that. It’s one of the great mysteries.”

Give the straight answers, not play around the words in fear of the nuts. Show some leadership. I think creationists are same as liberals — living in a make believe fantasy land and feeling offended when somebody pops their bubble.

If they want a REAL bizarre answer to that question, ask ANY muslim cleric.

He’ll tell you that allah made the earth out of a big blood clot and then Adam, no, Abraham...no wait! Mohammed built the kaaba as the next order of bizness.

I am not making this up.

Here we go - I’ve been wondering how the left was going to delegitimize a man as attractive and well-spoken as Rubio before 2016, and this looks like the start - jump on every careless or provocative statement he makes (you know - things like “57 states” or “vote for revenge”) to make him sound ignorant or out-of-touch - after four years of such relentless demonization 83% of the public will believe he can’t tie his own shoe laces in the morning......

I do not get the Rubio bandwagon...the man was born to Cuban citizens living in the US, both of whom only became naturalized only when he was a about 4 years old

Does obama’s trashing the Constitution’s natural born citizen requirment make it OK for any anchor baby to run as President?

Is Charles Blow a paleontologist? Has he done original research into this? How does he claim to know how old the earth is?

He relies on Authority, same as a Biblical literalist. Make him admit it!

The only thing Charles is Blowing is hot air out of the wrong end. Rubio should have been ready for the gottcha moment.

“For me, it is troubling that Senator Rubio hemmed and hawed about answering that question because it tells me he might believe or at the very least he hasn’t given the subject much thought.”

No, he was walking a tight rope between not wanting to offend the evangelicals and creationists, who make up a decent chunk of the conservative base, and being ridiculed by the rest of the world if he said the earth was 6000 years old. So he chose to stammer.

But that ain’t going to work long term. As with the abortion issue, the left has learned how to exploit inconsistencies between science and the belief systems of some conservatives, so whoever is going to run for national office better pick one side or the other and be consistent and confident about it. I would recommend they pick the scientific answer. Even the pope eventually agreed with Galileo.

We lost two slam dunk senate seats because of stupid answers to these type of issues. Don’t think for a minute the dems are going to forget it.

“Throw the question back at them. Make them expose their position.”

Naaa, They would just reply, “According to St. (Carl) Sagan 1:1, the earth is Billions & Billions of years old”. (Not to be confused with St. (Harry) Reid 5:17, “Trillions & Trillions”.

After all this is the NYT.

But, then you just smile and reply “Well, there you go. If you already knew, why’d you ask?” and leave them with a non-answer.

"stereoptypes"

I've known a number of Democrats who believe in the recent earth theory. I think the Dem elites would be shocked to know how many of their constituents i.e. Obamatons are creationists.

You have a point! (Actually, I’m for deflecting the landmine questions, turning them around and using the interviewer’s answers to nail down their position—and bias—something which lets everyone know what the interviewer is pushing.)

The earth and indeed linear time have no meaning absent Man and The word of God for which they were created. (If a tree falls in the forest does it make a sound? In the absence of an intelligent auditor, no). God created Time but until He placed Man in it it had no meaning or point.

I have no problem with the earth being only as old as the Bible says. The One who wrote the Bible invented Time and gets to define it in all respects.

No matter what Rubio says, they are going to mock him. However, many paleontologists believe that birds are dinosaurs of the same family as the infamous raptors. So, if you think of humans and dinosaurs coexisting, think not of Fred Flint-stone, but of Long John Silver.

I would not vote for someone who explicitly stated that they believe the Earth was created in 6 literal days. They are too irrational in my opinion to hold office and vote on laws effecting everyone’s lives.

I would not vote for someone who would NOT deny that they believe their religion teaches that they would be a GOD someday. They are too timid IMHO to hold office and vote on laws effecting everyone’s lives.

The Doctrine and Covenants

Section 132

Revelation given through Joseph Smith the Prophet, at Nauvoo, Illinois, recorded 12 July 1843, relating to the new and everlasting covenant, including the eternity of the marriage covenant, and also the plurality of wives (see History of the Church, 5:501–7). Although the revelation was recorded in 1843, it is evident from the historical records that the doctrines and principles involved in this revelation had been known by the Prophet since 1831.

1–6, Exaltation is gained through the new and everlasting covenant; 7–14, The terms and conditions of that covenant are set forth; 15–20, Celestial marriage and a continuation of the family unit enable men to become gods; 21–25, The strait and narrow way leads to eternal lives; 26–27, The law is given relative to blasphemy against the Holy Ghost; 28–39, Promises of eternal increase and exaltation are made to prophets and Saints in all ages; 40–47, Joseph Smith is given the power to bind and seal on earth and in heaven; 48–50, The Lord seals upon him his exaltation; 51–57, Emma Smith is counseled to be faithful and true; 58–66, Laws governing the plurality of wives are set forth.

16Therefore, when they are out of the world they neither marry nor are given in amarriage; but are appointed angels in bheaven, which angels are ministering cservants, to minister for those who are worthy of a far more, and an exceeding, and an eternal weight of glory.

17For these angels did not abide my law; therefore, they cannot be enlarged, but remain separately and singly, without exaltation, in their saved condition, to all eternity; and from henceforth are not gods, but are aangels of God forever and ever.

18And again, verily I say unto you, if a man marry a wife, and make a covenant with her for time and for all eternity, if that acovenant is not by me or by my word, which is my law, and is not sealed by the Holy Spirit of promise, through him whom I have anointed and appointed unto this power, then it is not valid neither of force when they are out of the world, because they are not joined by me, saith the Lord, neither by my word; when they are out of the world it cannot be received there, because the angels and the gods are appointed there, by whom they cannot pass; they cannot, therefore, inherit my glory; for my house is a house of order, saith the Lord God.

19And again, verily I say unto you, if a man amarry a wife by my word, which is my law, and by the new and beverlasting covenant, and it is csealed unto them by the Holy Spirit of dpromise, by him who is anointed, unto whom I have appointed this power and the ekeys of this priesthood; and it shall be said unto them—Ye shall come forth in the first resurrection; and if it be after the first resurrection, in the next resurrection; and shall inherit fthrones, kingdoms, principalities, and powers, dominions, all heights and depths—then shall it be written in the Lamb’s gBook of Life, that he shall commit no hmurder whereby to shed innocent iblood, and if ye abide in my covenant, and commit no murder whereby to shed innocent blood, it shall be done unto them in all things whatsoever my servant hath put upon them, in time, and through all eternity; and shall be of full force when they are out of the world; and they shall pass by the angels, and the gods, which are set there, to their jexaltation and glory in all things, as hath been sealed upon their heads, which glory shall be a fulness and a continuation of the kseeds forever and ever.

20 Then shall they be gods, because they have no end; therefore shall they be from aeverlasting to everlasting, because they continue; then shall they be above all, because all things are subject unto them. Then shall they be bgods, because they have call power, and the angels are subject unto them.

21Verily, verily, I say unto you, except ye abide my alaw ye cannot attain to this glory.

22For astrait is the gate, and narrow the bway that leadeth unto the exaltation and continuation of the clives, and few there be that find it, because ye receive me not in the world neither do ye know me.

23But if ye receive me in the world, then shall ye know me, and shall receive your exaltation; that awhere I am ye shall be also.

24This is aeternal lives—to bknow the only wise and true God, and Jesus Christ, whom he hath csent. I am he. Receive ye, therefore, my law.

25aBroad is the gate, and wide the way that leadeth to the bdeaths; and many there are that go in thereat, because they creceive me not, neither do they abide in my law.

After all I voted for Romney but I don’t know how much of the Mormon doctrine he truly believes.

A lotof Christians voted for Romney but it indicates to me that they:

1. Don't know what MORMONism teachs
2. Don't CARE what MORMONism teachs
3. Don't KNOW what the BIBLE teaches
4. Don't CARE what the BIBLE teaches.

Romney has lived and breathed mormonism his entire life, he could never have received the Temple Recommend without doing so, not to mention become a Mormon Bishop and Stake President. He swallows all of it, whole hog and you think being a "New Earth creationist" is too weird in a candidate to vote for?
