Word For The Day, Monday, 12/10/12
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
noun, plural quid·di·ties. 1. the quality that makes a thing what it is; the essential nature of a thing. 2. a trifling nicety of subtle distinction, as in argument.
Etymology:1539, "captious nicety in argument" from M.L. quidditas, lit. "whatness," from L. quid "what," neut. of quis (see who). Sense developed from scholastic disputes over the nature of things. Original meaning "real essence or nature of a thing" is attested in Eng. from 1569.
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.
The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....
Here is my example with WFTD.
In poor taste, and using bad business sense, a bartender captured the quiddity of these young women.

No pushing at the door please!
belly up to the breakfast bar and come to class.
In spite of all recriminations regarding a poor campaign, an inadequate candidate, or various gaffes, the quiddity of the matter is Election Fraud.
Did he offer them a vinegar-and-water?
"Quiddittyou're killin' me!", she said.
I was up early because my husband is in the hospital. I’ve scanned the news of the day, and you two (xsmommy and leftthatothersite) have captured the quiddity of today’s news in your two posts.
voter ID laws are essential. but even then, we may still be doomed, because i am sure the dems have all their bases covered in the fraud dept. A+++
oh i hope it’s nothing serious, prayers offered up for him.
My heart aches to say it, but you are probably right.
that is priceless!! A++++
The voters revealed their true quiddity
Good intentions all skewed by stupidity
Now end times are nearing
Sheep ripe for the shearing
Going FORWARD. all smiles and placidity
we need a big END TIMES countdown to the 21st! 11 more days? maybe only 10 depending on what time of day it ends on the 21st?
oh and excellent pome A+++++
Phooey. I’m a trader, and while the quiddity of the markets is of some importance, the real feature of concern is liquiddity (sic). If you ain’t got liquiddity, then quiddity don’t matter a bit.
i love that pic. am going to send it out to everyone i know.
ok then, gimme some : ) A++++
I thought this was a measure of how well you do at that Harry Potter game.
i am going to make a horrifying admission, right here in the open, on the internets. some of you may turn away in disgust, others will just talk badly about me behind my back, but here goes... We have lived in our present house for 12 years. I had custom made window treatments installed within the first 6 mo. i am guessing. they have never been cleaned. yes, you heard me right— 12 years and these austrian shades hanging in the living room, and they are/were off-white mind you, are FILTHY BEYOND BELIEF. i don’t go in the living room very often, can go weeks without stepping foot in there. but we are getting the house ready for our christmas party next weekend and that’s where the tree goes, right in front of those FILTHY austrian shades. i was near tears on Friday when i first noticed the filth. xshub was entirely nonplussed by it, which made me want to MURDER HIM ON THE SPOT. He said, have them cleaned. i said its a few weeks before christmas are you INSANE? do you think i can just snap my fingers and have them cleaned? once i calmed myself, after he urged me to SIMMER DOWN [my urge to murder escalated at that phrase, actually] i googled, and found someone in the falls church area who does custom drapery cleaning. The lady came yesterday to remove them [they are mounted on a board which is screwed into the window frame] and wonder of wonders, she thinks she can have them done this week. i saw $$$ in her eyes as she walked around looking at the filthy window treatments in the other rooms. if she does a good job, we will have her methodically go through and clean them all. so there, now you know my shameful secret. But honestly, she said she is one of only two in our area that does cleaning of custom window treatments. i am thinking i am not the only filthy person in northern VA.
A+++ and an extra + for the first quidditch reference.
Did you try vacuuming them?
the material is very delicate, they are sheer shades, i would be afraid they’d get sucked into the vacuum.
Is this your rapper name? Quid It T?
would be a great one, wouldn’t it??? A+++
You had me with “filthy person.”
You should confess to your priest. After hearing tales of adultery, thievery, and brutality all morning, dirty window treatments would give him a lift.
Which reminds me:
A nun was undressed, getting ready to step into the shower when there was a knock on her door.
“Who is it?”
“It’s John, the blind man.”
Feeling no concern about her nakedness in front of a blind man, she opened the door.
“Hi, sister! Nice boobs!! The blinds are clean and I’ve come to hang them back up.”
Love that, I do. Except he left out Yoda speak.
I think I’m a pretty good housekeeper but once in a while I see something and am stunned that I’ve missed it before!
vacuums have an adjustment to the suction, leave that wide open to try then slowly close to raise the suction. usually works for me, just pick a room you hate the window coverings in. ;^)
what an orderly toy room! he could come to our house and chan and jules could do that to him with their dog toys! ; )
I got sick of my elderly dog peeing on my floors....SO I bought doggie diapers. She can move pretty fast when I pick one of those things up. She hates them. I, however, feel much more at ease about leaving her with a diaper on. My house feels cleaner already.
we paid a fortune 12 years ago, though i don’t remember who even made them for me or what i paid. the lady yesterday had to tell me what they were called again. i presume i knew when i got them originally that the living room had austrian shades and that the dining room has a kingston valance with panels. but the lady yesterday told me what they were called and that they were very expensive. i am not a home decorating type, not interested in redoing anything. she can bleach these because they are offwhite. i don’t move furniture around or redecorate or watch any of those shows, they just make me nervous. i am missing whatever that particular gene is. Though i have to say i am happy with the new hardwood floors in the fam room. we had the berber wall to wall taken out and hardwood put in there, bc it’s easier to dustmop for dog hair than to vacuum constantly. Jules black hair became a problem on the light colored rug. Chan and Loosh[RIP] are/were only a problem if you are wearing black.
Omigosh, as if that elf couldn’t be any creepier!
now THAT is creepy. Mr Spanky was suave and debonair!
I’ve never treated my windows. I didn’t even know they were sick!
older homes, like my parents, you can throw up a pair of drapes and throw them out and replace them when they get dirty. newer housing has the more dramatic windows and unless you want to be on display to the entire street, you have to pay to have someone come in and cover them with draperies. My SIL is going to facing this situation when they move into their new house in Houston. They have lived in an old house in Ohio for years. They bought new construction and you can’t get that really, without the more dramatic window styles. Lucky for her, her mother worked in a drapery shop for years and does that kind of sewing. so she will likely do them for my SIL and bro’s new house.
So, a big box of Hefty bags for a house warming present.
Cleveland gets to win one more game and then the world ends, just when things are gettign good.
He’s well spoken but I don’t understand the tiny pockets.
I still hear the Dems whining and screaming that Republicans are looking to kill off the elderly by destroying medicare entirely. Please, the fact is we have parents and grandparents too, and we realize that it’s become a necessity for them, despite the quiddity that the program itself is so overextended that it will fail entirely within a dozen years. Refusing to look at it and take any steps of any sort will only ensure it’s demise.
