A bicyclist who apparently was angry at being cut off in traffic fought with and stabbed the motorist he believed to be responsible.
D.C. police officers were called to the 1600 block of Massachusetts Avenue NW about 10:20 p.m. Wednesday for a report of a stabbing. Witnesses told investigators that a bicyclist struck the driver's side mirror of a Smart car with a heavy bike lock.
According to the police report, the driver then got out of the car and asked, "Why did you do that?"
That's when it escalated into a fight, which ended, according to witnesses, when the bicyclist stabbed the driver in the ribs and fled the scene.
More bikes and cars are sharing the road than ever before in the District, and it can, at times, make for an uneasy co-existence. Gregory Billing of the Washington Area Bicyclist Association said its important for both motorists and bike riders to observe the rules of the road. He noted that the time of year when the days are shortest is the most hazardous.

You should read the comments on the page at the link. The cyclists and the fed-up drivers are going at it.
Is why I posted this here!! I know how most FReepers feel about the spandex nazies.
I thought they had knife control in D.C. ‘Bout time they make it a law . . . no knifes! (/sarc)
LOL! Thanks for thinking of us!
I am sick of the bicyclists in my town. I really don’t care what happens to them at all. If they get killed, being stupid children- I won’t cry about it.
I try to post the stories that FReepers will like best...
Now have at it everyone, I want to see funny pictures and remarks that only FR can do!!
Most FReepers can't tell the difference between responsible riders that always let cars have the right of way, who have been riding for most of their life like me, and the spandex Nazis/hipsters on fixed gears.
I hear you.
Witnesses told investigators that a bicyclist struck the driver’s side mirror of a Smart car with a heavy bike lock.
Most of them are like me, have had bad experiences with those nazies.
Had one pull out in front of me, my light was green his was red. They don’t seem to think the rules of the road apply to them. He got upset cause I would not break for him, well I had the right of way. I also have a ton of steal around me, what does he have for protection? Spandex and a crash helmet. I’d think he would have known better.
The driver! At least he HAS to obey the rules of the road where has bikers think it does not apply to them.
That looks like fun to me.
That's because, with few exceptions, their behavior is the same.
Maybe I should get a GoCam and make an instructional video on how to properly ride a bike.
I commute to work on a bike when it’s not raining, and I always CCW when I ride. I’m very polite, too (see: Robert Heinlein).
One of those idiotic Cabinet Members of Obozo bikes to work.
May be commendable BUT the 2 Black Suburbans that have to guard him create twice the pollution than the one it would take to drive him in.
PLUS how much extra fuel while keeping those ‘tanks’ idling at bicycle speeds.
I ride my mountaintrail bike at the shoulder here.
Even so, I have idiots aim at me despite my not doing anything in the lane side of the road.
That said, I have seen bicyclists block the entire road by riding in the lane and expecting everyone to just plod along behind them.
[This in a 55 MPH zone.]
Basically, it’s “this is MY space, stay out of it.” territorial aggression.
I bike to work. I assume all cars are there to kill me. It makes one careful!
I agree with many of the posters here. Just because you have the right of way doesn't mean you should insist upon it. Especially when tonnage rules.
” Luckily the dog didn’t continue with the attack and ran off. “
Probably snickering behind its whiskers, “Hey look what I did to that goofy human.”
Dogs are like that regardless of breed.
On my road it’s a beagle.
Riding along and next thing you know you have a beagle on you.
One road over it’s a bluebird that nails you.
I avoid that road.
Was driving with my then boyfriend when a dog ran out in the road and was barking at my car. I veered to try to miss it but almost went off the road in the process. My boyfriend said to me “if the dog wants to commit suicide then let him but don’t wreck your car over a dog”.
He is correct and since then I keep my eyes on the road and drive strait ahead. Not going to wreck my car for a dog or a person on a bicycle but if they hit me it’s their fault.
If you ride on the sidewalk then no one is out to kill you. If you ride in rush hour traffic, in a group of 20 children, who are trying to piss everyone off, then all bets are off.
If you're doing it for exercise, a stationary bike makes far more sense. You can do it in the comfort of your own home, more carefully monitor your heart rate, resistance levels, calorie burn, etc. and not have to worry about exhaust fumes, road rash, punctured tires, stop signs, intersections, stop lights etc. In short, in an hour on a stationary bike and an hour on a road bike, you'll get better quality exercise on a stationary bike.
If you're using a bike for commuting or general transportation, a car is far more useful. You get where you're going faster, can carry more stuff with you, and you're not sweating like a hog when you get there. Some people will argue that in a big city they are more efficient (i.e. the bike couriers in NYC), but in all honesty, the only advantage they offer is that it's far easie to flagrantly violate traffic laws on a bicycle.
In my mind, the only place a bike really makes any sense is if you're taking a mountain bike someplace you really can't get in a car.
What are the laws in your town in regards to cyclists?
Do bikes have the same right to be on a road as cars and trucks?
Are there bike lanes?
“the driver then got out of the car”..
Darwin alert
Exactly how hard is it to knock a review mirror off one of those stupid toy cars? I suspect a cyclist could sneeze as they rode by and blast the mirror across the street..geeesh.
Had a black lab run head first into the side of my car on Route 6 as I was heading towards Middletown.
Surprised the crap outta me.
One second I’m tooling long at 55, next thing I hear is “Clunk” and i see a dog sliding across the road behind me.
I pull over, put on the hazards and looked the car over.
Small dent, nothing much.
Dog was fine, oddly enough.
And pleased as punch that people were talking to him.
We found his owner and asked them to take him for a looksie at the vet.
Dunno if they did, they never contacted me about it.
Perhaps we need to ban knives. After all, people are getting killed. If it wasn’t for that knife, there would be no crime here.
“In my mind, the only place AN ATV really makes any sense is if you’re taking AN ATV someplace you really can’t get in a car.
There, fixed it for you.
Not self defense. Bikeliberalmania.
“We found his owner and asked them to take him for a looksie at the vet.
Dunno if they did, they never contacted me about it.”
Okay wait a minute!!
Most states have a leash law, so why was “rover” not on it?
Second because the dog was not contained by his/her master it hit your car and did damage to your property.
Yea I’d be calling his master about paying for my damages not the dogs. If the dog had been on his leash that would not happened. I am sorry dogs get hit everyday but it is the duty of the master to keep them safe not your duty to kill yourself trying not to hit them.
That knife has been hanging around guns for too long and now look what happens. A good knife gone bad. He was probably born to be hunting knife with asperations of becoming a butcher knife. but in the wrong company he went from being a concealed weapon/pocket knife to a STABBER.
My concern was for the dog, not the owner.
The vet I knew, I would have had a dog out of the deal.
Dunno why the dog was out, owner didn’t seem too concerned.
*idiots*
Joe ‘round these parts we only use an ATV to go up and down the holler.
You think the cars are hard on the spandex nazies? They have never clashed with the ATV’ers!
“Dunno why the dog was out, owner didnt seem too concerned.
*idiots*”
Exactly! It is not that I don’t care for the dog but buying a new car in this economy is kinda hard. Like I said not gonna crash my car over a dog let out by a careless master.
In a perfect world we would smack the owner but usually I just call the pound.
That is a picture from 2008 story of a drunk driver who fell asleep at the wheel and plowed his car into a bike race. He injured 10 and killed 1.
Dunno what the outcome was.
The trooper behind me stuck around after telling me to split.
:-/
If anythng, he likely called animal control.
I didn’t have a cellphone at the time.
Regret having one now.
Ever see those mind numbed robots on “Cops”?
They sit there and say the dumbest stuff possible?
That’s what the owner was like.
Haven’t seen the dog since.
I wonder how a group of bicycles would do against a 13,000lb John Deere?
I ride in traffic. I either keep up with the cars and follow the laws, or get out of the way.
And defensive biking is 10x more important than defensive driving. You have no mass as a biker. Each of those cars can kill you. Ride accordingly!
Probably not so well.
And we do have idiots here that will block the lane and look at you as if you are the idiot.
Flipside, we have idiots who will try to tag you with the vehicle simply because you are there, doesn’t matter if you are on the other side of the white line or not.
I was on grass when I had a truck try to hit me.
When I drive, it’s a 4 door Tundra 4x4. When I’m home, I’m armed. 2hen I bike, I have double blinkers front and back, masses of flourescent, etc. When I vote, I vote as conservative as is available. Biking is not a political act. :-)
If bicycles were banned this wouldn’t have happened.
“I wonder how a group of bicycles would do against a 13,000lb John Deere?”
Question hard to answer without knowing if the Bush Hog attachments were turning .......
I’d probably have to stop from time to time and clear the shreaded spandex from the radiator to avoid overheating the engine.
It sure seems to be taken as a political act on FR.
And I suppose not just on FR. I had a woman accuse me of "saving the earth" after I got off my bike in a supermarket parking lot. She beamed at me in what she apparently thought was a special moment of communion between two kindred liberal spirits.
I told her firmly that I was not saving the world, I was just riding my bike. I'm certain that she did not understand. If she knew my political views she probably would have spit on me.
My post was a joke. You have the tree hugger smart car driver vs. tree hugger biker. Si?
Over here- it is a political militant act. It drives me nuts. They dart in and out of traffic and ride is a swarm. They love Sunday mornings so they can really mess with people. It is totally out of control. I have even spoken with the police about it, because I am going to have a new driver soon- and they make the roads hazardous. The police agree that they are a huge nuisance and cause danger- but it is a political green movement- and nothing is going to stop them. We even have miles and miles of parks and trials and places for bikes- and they love to mess with drivers. They are not biking to work, in groups of 23-30.
