Four-year-old Gavyn Boscio loves to cook and asked for an Easy-Bake Oven for Christmas. But when his big sister went to buy one, she discovered to her disappointment that it comes only in girly pink and purple, with girlsand only girlson the box and in the commercials.
So the eighth-grader from Garfield, N.J., started an online petition asking Pawtucket, R.I.-based Hasbro to make the toy ovens in gender-neutral colors and feature boys on the package.
By Friday, 13-year-old McKenna Popes petition had garnered more than 30,000 signatures in a little more than a week.
And celebrity chef Bobby Flay, who owned an Easy-Bake Oven as a boy, is among those weighing in on her side.

I don’t understand the barfalert. So guys shouldn’t cook? I suppose they should just hit something over the head, drag it past the fire and eat it raw?
Horse dung.
What difference does it make what color it is?
Toss the Easy Bake in the trash and teach the kid to cook on a real stove.
It’s not a reference to the oven itself, but to the endless search for so-called “gender-neutral” everything. I learned how to cook a full Irish breakfast before I was six years old after all . . .
Teach ‘em on an open flame. Nothing like meat cooked in that fashion . . .
Petitioning the manufacturer, instead of suing is the right way.

Why doesn’t mommy cook with both of them in their real kitchen? That’s what this mommy does with my four year old son and 14 month old daughter. The bigger the mess the more the fun!
Did you happen to notice the words “gender neutral” in the body of the article . . . ?
And I may be no professional, but I learned on the real thing in my youth, both with electric and gas stoves.

Bushmills it not just for breakfast anymore.
Is this the Irish version of Ke$sha, LOL
I applaud the sales of AR-15 style firearms in pink, so they appeal to girls, why wouldn't I be happy if Hasbro made an Easy-bake in OD green? I might buy one for the grandsons.
/johnny
It appeals to me. I want to stick this kid’s head in one.
But it does pretty good if you can't get a real Tennessee breakfast.

Only when girls want the Red Ryder bb gun.
How are they going to keep making these ovens anyway? Don’t they use an incandescent lightbulb to cook the food?

Teach the kid to use a real oven, good lord, people have way to much time on their hands.

We don’t have to cook. We marry the cook, dishwasher, coffeemaker, Roomba.
BBQ and fishing is what we do best.
If you have an old one then I believe that used a 100 watt light bulb for heat. Now banned.
In the meantime, her younger son was already baking cakes in the real oven.
Easy bake oven was just plain stupid. My daughter learned. Doubt if her granddaughter will ever get one.
Not that I would ever have done such a thing.
You have no evidence.
Officer.
My son wanted one when he was four to make cookies. He learned a real oven an seven.
He can cook anything, but generally he cooks the meat and the wife cooks the rest.
I thought it was just stainless steel or yellow, some neutral color. Cannot recall now.
He would not have cared. What four year old does?
Bushmills it not just for breakfast anymore.
________________
I think you have to have a handful of oatmeal with it to qualify as breakfast.
My wife teach’s all of our Grandkids to cook cookies in a real oven.
The secret is in the batter, rolling it out, and cutting the cookies, The oven is superfluous.
What are "gender-neutral" colors?
In the context of the article, colors that are not “girly pink and purple” or presumed otherwise “girly” (their description).
It’s one way I suppose, a little hard to bake that way though.
It appealed to my youngest son. He wanted me to buy one for my oldest granddaughter (4 years younger than youngest son) so she would cook things for him to et :-)
seriously - mean and women should be able to cook a good home-made meal. Taught all my boys how to cook - it’s a basic survival skill
Your breakfast looks pretty good - except for those black things on the front of the plate.
What is that?
It will appeal to boys just fine if they can cook bugs and spiders to death in it. :)
Other than the “gender-neutral” phrase, the article has a fair amount of merit. The advantage of the toy oven is that you don’t have to have an adult around to use it. Yes, cooking with the real thing is fun, and you do get a much wider range of dishes, but you *have* to have an adult around when the child chef is only 4 or 5. I learned on an ancient Glenwood gas stove, where the oven was lit by dropping a lit match into a hole where the burners were and turning on the gas, and the cooktop burners had to be lit with a welding striker; Mom or Dad was always around to handle that when I was small.
Yes, electric or modern gas cooking is a lot safer now, but you still can’t let a 4-year-old run one unsupervised, and that’s where the EZ-Bake comes in. The kid can “cook” on their own for fun, doing the basic things, and still do more complex stuff with a grown-up’s help.
When I was a kid my little sister got an easy bake oven. I think my brothers and I cooked up half the stuff. I can still remember the taste of that stuff.
They were fun and it’s a good toy.
Sure, have little kids try and cook stuff over a real stove or oven and scar them up for life...
He sort of makes a point. It used to be that toys were mini adult things and were made to look like it. Why shouldn’t toy stoves come in stove colors?
You have to teach the boy how to cure Duracoat somehow. Easy bake oven just might work.
AND THERE'S A REWARD AT THE END !!!
Buy the kid a real cast iron dutch oven so he can learn to cook like a man!
He can make stew, roasts, soups, biscuits, and he can turn the lid upside down on the fire and use the inside to cook bacon and eggs!
The freaks think they’ll “domesticate” young males; instead they are just guaranteeing that they won’t even cohabitate anymore (they won’t need to).
Marriage is basically off the table already.
I don’t really see the problem with this. Many boys grow up to be bakers and chefs. Look at the popularity of a show like Cake Boss. Boys like treats like cakes, brownies, and cookies as much as girls do. There’s nothing wrong with making an Easy Bake oven in a color like blue or red for boys. Some of the cookware supplies could come in fun shapes like cars and dinosaurs.
Power to the peevish!!!
I think we should leave those decisions to the company not a stupid politically motivated online petition.
They can start their own company and do it
What came out of the Easy Bake oven. ;)
Beat me to it. I had mine using a real kitchen knife at 3, was flipping crepes at 5 and was able to put out entire the Thanksgiving spread at 12 the year I was too sick to get out of bed.
What’s a ‘barphalert’?
I’m just messin’ with you. :)
I think so. I saw one at Walmart the other day.
I didn’t have an Easy-Bake oven but I had a Lite-Brite. That was fun.
LOL!!
I actually drank two beers the other day! I didn’t think I could do it.
