Posted on 12/14/2012 5:46:12 AM PST by george76

A man near Fresno, Calif., was mauled to death by four pit bulls ... The man was found dead Tuesday night in the driveway of a home in Selma. Animal control officers later impounded four pit bulls, six pit bull puppies and two other dogs at a house next door

...

A neighbor said he wasn't surprised, saying that the pit bulls had killed his own dog about a month ago.

They come in our front yard and will come in our driveway," Blake Anderson told KSEE. "I couldn't even get out of my car one time. There were like four of them, so yeah it's ridiculous."

Was it the owner of the pitbulls that was mauled to death??? The story is unclear.

The owner of the animals did sign all the animals over to Animal Control Services, where they will not be returned to the owner.

He’s 90 lbs of muscle and our 3 lb Chihuahua absolutely rules the Pit.

On the contrary, it’s a good thing this man didn’t have a gun. Because bringing a gun to a violent situation only makes things worse. (Well, this *is* California, after all.)

Disagree. A cocked and loaded gun won't fire unless you pull the trigger. A pit bull can attack for any reason or no reason at all, and then you'd better have YOUR loaded gun handy if you don't want to be seriously injured.

here in the South it is popular to raise pit bulls around children. They are misunderstood. they only attack you if you are scared, you wink at them, or move your arm in a 69% arc. If you abide by these basic rules, there is a good chance they will not bite your face off or kill your children.

I understand your point, it's just that one of the "arguments" that the pit bull loving hand wringers use against banning the breed is that banning the breed is like banning a variety of gun. Just ain't so for the very reason you mentioned. Guns don't attack all on their own. And I don't buy their crap that "it isn't the dog it's the owner." If dogs can be bred for different appearance, they can also be bred for different levels of aggressivness.

Saw a really interesting documentary on canines. They included a segment on Soviet efforts to breed tame silver foxes. From a captive population of approximately one thousand foxes they began breeding. The first captive generation they had about 1% that showed indifference, neither fear nor aggression, toward humans. They bred these with each other and in two generations had tame silver foxes. The really curious thing was that other physical traits in the silver foxes changed as well (although not specifically bred for these traits, they were just concentrating on the temperament), and the resulting foxes looked more 'dog-like'.

Anyone that thinks aggression is not a genetic predisposition in breeds is simply uninformed.

“We have a pittie that would kill you...with his tail and tongue. He is a great big love monkey.”

So did my friend Doug. Daisy would flop over on her back, with her tongue lolling out, as soon as she saw me, cuz she knew she was gonna get a tummy rub. One day Doug came home from softball, and was standing in the living room talking on the phone. Daisy attacked, latching on to his thigh. He had to kill her with his softball bat. He was bleeding profusely! Luckily, the friend he was on the phone with, called 911 as soon as he heard Doug start screaming. Paramedics told Doug he would have bled out in another one/two minutes if they hadn’t gotten there when they did.

So,,,, good luck with your “love monkey.”

If he was a rescuer, this is tragic.

How about if they weren't his dogs at all which in spite of the poor wrting in the article appears to be the case, then if the actual owner were a "rescuer." his worthless a$$ should be buried under the jail. Any jackass who endangers his neighbors by harboring dangerous vicious animals and then compounds the crime by not controlling them needs to feel the full effect of the law just as though he hauled out a shotgun and gunned his neighbor down for fun.

The neighbor is just as dead regardless of the motives of the owner.

Pit bull apologists are always blaming factors other than the dog. “It was provoked.” is a favorite, followed by “It was the owner’s fault for making the dog vicious.” Well it always is the owner’s fault legally, but that’s not what they mean. And as far as provoked, your mere presence where the dog can see you is often all the “provocation” these dangerous animals need. I wouldn’t keep a grizzley bear, a bison or a cougar. There are fewer injuries and deaths annually from these - considered the most dangerous of north american animals - than from pit bulls.

Yeah, it is in the training and raising.

By nature they love people. Don’t you love a dog that size that follows you around and wants to be a lap dog?

My daughter works with a rescue group and she fosters (mostly) pitties while finding them homes. She’s got a real sweetheart right now (Miss Frankie). I’m not the dog owner type or I’d probably take her.

Any FReeper in the greater Louisville, KY area that likes dogs should go here:

http://www.savingsunnyinc.org/

I have been very impressed with the care and training these dogs get from this group. They are very careful to only adopt out dogs that have been thoroughly vetted, with all medical stuff done. And they also are *very* careful to check out the potential owners. Usually they do a test weekend with the interested party. The new owners have to sign an agreement that they will not sell or give the dog away & can bring the dog back if they feel it is not working out.

If I were interested in a dog, I’d probably start with this organization.

They are lapdogs, that’s for sure.

Our pup climbs right up and plops on my lap, all 90 lbs of him, then the Chi is right behind so he’s not left out.

I looked at the site...some nice pups available there. Wish I had room for another one.

in 2011 there were 31 fatal dog attacks of which 22 were pit bull attacks in the usa. in 2011 there were 2 fatal bear attacks in the usa. no fatal bison attacks that I know of and I think one cougar attack, but not a fatal one.

It is not just the fatal dog attacks, but the hundreds of injury attacks caused by pit bulls each year.

I am always amazed at the number of pit bull owners who say the dog never acted that way before. They cannot understand what caused them to go off.

It has gotten to the point that pit bulls cannot be treated as pets anymore, but like unpredictable wild animals.

Love beads & dope...LOL. Should I take insult, or just laugh?

I figured I’d get a frenzied ad hominum response. Thanks for not disappointing me.

I’ve seen all that. I find it somewhat perplexing that the same agenda driven “journalists” (I use the term journalist very loosely) that are shoveling out crap on global warming, guns and crimes stats, evil conservatives, arsenic, ozone holes, et al, are suddenly right on the money when they write about pit bulls.

Lies, damn lies...and statistics.

Had a case in Louisville a while back that blamed pit bulls for an incident. Turns out the dumb ass “reporter” never talked to anyone involved, nor did he see the offending dog. He picked up a couple of basic stats like time and location from no one knows where and proceeded to make up the rest. When cornered on that, he admitted that he had heard “somewhere” that it was a pit bull. There was no correction or retraction published. Lot of that going on.

Just more proof that people will believe anyone if that person tells them what they want to hear.

The checklist...

1) large and aggressive breed of dog? Yes.
2) multiple dogs? Yes.
3) off leash/out of the yard - out of control? Yes.
4) prior reports of violent behavior? Yes.
5) unrealistic expectation of passivity by owner (often despite #4)? Not reported - but likely.

Yada, yada, yada.

It’s boring and fascinating at the same time to watch the hysteria in these “pit bull” threads. Never fails & it never varies.

These threads aren’t discussions or debates. They are a bunch of monkeys throwing their feces at each other.

Laughably, I’m not a apologist for pit bulls or dogs in general. I just throw a few facts and opinions into the mix and watch the anti pit bull crowd go bonkers. Most of my gripe is with dog owners, who are the root of pretty much all dog related problems.

BTW, one reason I like my handle is because when someone gets pissed at me, it’s a guarantee they make snarky hippie comments. He he. Like what I did (work hard & party hard) or didn’t do (get all that nookie that was supposedly so available) in the 60s has anything to do with dogs.

Again I point out that many people here regularly rip the bias and (lack of) quality reporting in the media, and justifiably so. Yet when it comes to some topics all critical thinking is abandoned. My example of the reporter in Louisville that made up most of the printed story on a dog “attack” was completely accurate. Critical thinking would suggest that we question the accuracy of all “reporting”, not just on dog attacks. Do you seriously think that moron reporter is any better at his job when covering other subjects?

Some years ago, long story I will make short, the Tampa Tribune published an AIDS related piece that was so inaccurate it would have been laughable had it not been so dangerous. When I talked to the reporter who had reported as the gospel all sorts of bogus CDC numbers that the speaker just made up, I asked if she had verified any of them. Nope, said she, I’m sure he was telling the truth. I obtained the real CDC info which was almost 180 degrees opposite what she published and made her verify that I was correct & she was not (she called me a liar at first). She and the paper refused to print any sort of followup correction or even a BS clarification. My point? More consistent skepticism of our so called information services is in order. Especially when it conveniently supports our views.

Most news stories are poorly researched and written. Quality followups are extremely rare. We get presented 10% of the facts, those often inaccurate, and everyone is off and running.

I’m done, need sleep.
