Schieffer: NRA the lobby most feared by Congress
CBSthis morning ^

Posted on 12/15/2012 2:16:15 PM PST by RC one

"We're going to have to come together and take meaningful action to prevent more tragedies like this, regardless of the politics," Mr. Obama said.

CBS News chief Washington correspondent Bob Schieffer has been following the gun control debate since the assassination of President Kennedy. He said he takes the president at his word, but he's very skeptical about what will be possible, given the power of the most prominent gun lobbying group, the National Rifle Association.

"This is going to be a very, very difficult thing to do," he said. "Congress is literally afraid to take on the National Rifle Association because they know that if they make any kind of statement [that] even suggests some sort of limits on gun control, the NRA is going to pour, literally, hundreds of thousands of dollars in a campaign to defeat them."

Schieffer, who also hosts "Face the Nation," said Republicans and Democrats are so reluctant to talk about the issue that he's had trouble booking them on his Sunday morning news show.

"We talk about the lobby in Washington, AARP, which represents [people] on Social Security, as a very powerful lobby; you have the various energy lobbies; you've seen all kind of lobbies spring up not to raise taxes.

"I think the National Rifle Association is more feared than any of those associations," Schieffer said.

The libs may want to spend the weekend debating gun control, but BELIEVE ME, the Democrat leaders want NOTHING to do with it.

Oh, really?

Second Amendment Media War

We need to come up with ideas.

The "progressives" in the government, hollywood, and news media are, predictably, dancing in the blood of the dead children in Connecticut. Emboldened by Barak Obama's surprise second-term win (even he was surprised, you could see it in his face), they see the opportunity to "not let this crisis go to waste" and to push for far- reaching gun restrictions.

How far?

As far as they can go.

And, as usual, we on the right are about to get slaughtered in the media war.

They will convince the low information public that more restrictions on gun ownership (or even an outright ban on guns) will solve the problem and end these masacres.Once convinced, the measures taken to restrict gun- ownership, Constitutional or not, will be welcomed.

We know that a big contributor to these incidents are liberal policies. "Gun Free Zones" and the left's reluctance to allow criminally, dangerously insane individuals from being institutionalized have been the largest contributors to many of the recent attacks.

In the case of public schools: why are we not outraged at the continued existence of these federally mandated killing zones? We should be outraged, and we need to make our outrage known.

You know that the left (who's gun-control goal is not now, nor has it ever been about public safety) is going to do their best to manufacture outrage against law-abiding gun owners.

I know that, as conservatives, it is against our nature to organize. It is against our nature to band together behind a common method of acheiving our goals. It is against our nature to commit the slightest act of civil disobedience.

Our nature will continue to bite us in the backside.

It is a small gesture, but as a start, couldn't we print out several of these flyers:

and affix them over the top of the existing "No Weapons Allowed"/"Gun Free Zone" signs that are posted at businesses, schools, theaters, etc.

My hope is that if enough people do this, it will become news, and it may cause some people to think.

I'm sure that it sounds lame to many of you, but sitting around FreeRepublic bitching about our coming loss of freedom is not going to prevent our loss of freedom.I don't want to be the generation that allows freedom to go extinct.

Make no mistake, the media is where we will lose this war if we don't act.

If you have other ideas on how to attempt to use the media to our advantage, please contribute.

Get Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives off of TV and out of the movies.

Mexican school children would like to add 'get them out of the gun giveaway business por favor.'

Sorry, games made by Hollywood have mostly sucked.

Making them an “excellent and convenient scapegoat” would be lowering ourselves to the level of the leftists.

They are only bad when people have other major issues and or deficiencies, much like many other things.

The game companies are all Hollywood--they are very closely allied, if not actually owned and operated by studios. The execs who run them are pro-gay, pro anything leftwing, hate-hate-hate conservatives, and donate heavily to anything Democrat.

You won't see how ill the effects of these games are unless you spend a significant amount of time with developing teens who play them. They are as bad as porn.

Being a 1st Amendment type, I don't seek to regulate or shut them down. But being a 1st Amendment type, I am perfectly free to comment on the deleterious effect they have on young people and society--like drugs and porn and gambling. They take the place of real life to too many people; they're like Soma in Brave New World.

And we'd better find some scapegoats of our own to stop the momentum of the leftists who want to render us unarmed.

re: Making them an “excellent and convenient scapegoat” would be lowering ourselves to the level of the leftists.)))

I don't have any problem knowing myself to be better than filthy leftists.

At some point, we're going to have to learn how to fight back. Bloody entertainment is Hollywood, and Hollywood hates us and wants to ruin our lives. So attack bloody entertainment when they try to blame us for the actions of some game-addled, drug-addled loser who goes postal.

Or let them get your personal protection.

Just watch - they HAVE to do the lip-service. But watch for serious legislation - IT WILL NOT HAPPEN. They know better and have (much) bigger fish to fry.

One other thing, this was to be the weekend when the Dems started to twist the knife in the Republicans on the “fiscal cliff”. They had them RIGHT where they wanted them...the polls were killing the Republicans. This was to be the weekend when the Reps would scream UNCLE and give Obama his tax increases on “the rich” - and thereby finally cut the cord between the Republican Party and the Tea Party.

...oh well, not this weekend, and time is running short. This may have DESTROYED their plans and they cannot be happy about that, at all.

Somebody should remind our wonderful MSM exactly how many secret security police BO has in tow when he leaves the White House and how many planes it takes to transport his bullet proof limousine and all the security he schleps around, even to places like England where there are no guns allowed.

Somebody should also ask Bloomie why he takes security everywhere with him when he leaves his office in New York and Rahm in Chicago.

Yes, the same NRA. And because of their single minded goal of preserving our Second Amendment rights, they will reward and punish politicians solely on their stand on guns, all other issues be damned. This has led them to winning instead of losing. All the caterwauling by CNN and MSNBC will be for naught because the NRA has enough pols like Harry Reid scared to go against them. Dingy Harry couldn’t get elected dog catcher in Nevada if he voted against guns.

I really hope you are right. The one who doesn’t fit the mold is 0bamube though. His words “regardless of politics” echo his past ‘my way or the highway’ pattern. He is brutally efficient at demagoguery and demonizing his opponents thanks to the ultra-compliant MSM. Lacking the Congressional cooperation he will demand he may try an EO once again.

I do fear the EOs somewhat, but there are limits to what he can do, and he’ll find the going quite difficult if he goes overboard and has the states telling him to take a hike. There simply aren’t enough federal pigs to do it all themselves...as they’ll find out.
