I am truly bothered
Now I am not advocating a "Police State", or a complete armed society. But suppose each state government authorized the States' National Guard to post several trained members in each school. Being state employees this should not conflict with the ban on using the federal military in our own country. This would be done only after the participants have qualified as expert on the range with both sidearms and rifles, and have had CQB training and have shown themselves to be proficient. These could be posted on a revolving basis, and the time spent "on duty" would count toward their required ACDUTRA time for the year. Their "deployment" would be reasonably local, and they could spend their nights at home.
I know this might give the appearance of an "armed" society, but if you recall this was done following 911 and no one really objected.
These are our children and grandchildren we are talking about, and I cannot think of anything more precious and worth protecting. It is sad for me to think that after over 5 decades of life in this country, several years of which were spent in defense of my country, that I would even consider such an option. Evil has once again shown its' very ugly face, and it scares the hell out of me.

The military is for breaking things and killing people. It's what they do. It's the only thing the government is half-way competent at doing.
Want security? Hire security.
Leave the military out of it. Call them if you get invaded.

I think we are all troubled... but your solution is expensive and IMHO a bandaid. How about we throw out the political correct crap and deal with mental illness? The Colorado guy was a nut case. The Arizona shooter was a nutcase. As were the folks that were at the universities but we can’t deal with that. The gun laws worked as this fellow found he was unable to buy guns a few days ago... this was not a spur of the moment decision on his part. It was a long time ago (but not that long— I am not retired). When I was in high school —1,200 kids, I could have gone into the parking lot and found over 200 rifles and shotguns in students’ cars and pickups ... most in plain view in gun racks... all the vehicles unlocked and all of the guns loaded.
It is very sad, it is a tragic moment. The loss of a child is something that a parent should never have to deal with.

The current GOP House or the next GOP president should enact a law or executive order which requires school systems to have at least one trained civilian or police guard with a firearm at every public school. This guard must carry a semi-automatic pistol with a large capacity magazine or an evil black rifle such as an AR-15, and meet the marksmanship standards required by the United States military or their state police with those weapons. If they fail to comply, they receive no, I repeat, NO federal funds of any kind.
School shootings would then be a thing of the past. Count on it.
Americans are going to have to learn that it is up to us to protect our children and our families. The government sure as heck isn't going to do it.

I worked in a school office, and any one of us would’ve let that “man” through security. Because. We. Knew. Him.

That is another great idea, kind of a variation on my theme. I was trying to consider the costs involved, and hey we are paying the guardsmen anyway.
I would prefer a law allowing any teacher, school administrator, or college student who served and was honorably discharged from the U.S. Armed Services to conceal carry in any school.
We have to send the message to the evil among us that our schools are no longer target-rich, gun free zones where no can fight back.
Once we have demonstrable success with that, open it up to all citizens who could otherwise be issued a concealed carry permit.

Guardsmen have better things to do with the time we’re paying them for than babysitting kids, on the off-chance that a bad guy might show up at some school some day.
It’s a different world out there now, and not the Guard/Reserve you knew way back when. I’ve deployed three times as a Guardsman and been in close contact with the active component all three times (including having my infantry company as the main effort for an active duty armored task force in Iraq for five months). I won’t lower my standards to the active component’s level.
There are jacked-up soldiers, and jacked up units in both the active and the reserve components. Fact is, we’ve never won a war without the reserve components.
That having been said - - - you’re right. Keep the military out of it.
They need to be training in their MOS or AFSC, not pulling guard duty (badly) at grade schools.

Since staff and older students were issued arms, no school has been attacked by Palestinian terrorists.
The Ma'alot massacre was a terrorist attack in 1974 which included a two-day hostage-taking of 115 people which ended in the deaths of over 25 hostages. They threw kids off the roof to their deaths.

Let’s start informing said students that it is not just against the law to murder people - it’s a SIN as well!
Let’s put the fear of God into them.
The question then becomes on how to pay for it.

And make the schools stop teaching them that reality is a subjective concept.

We are NOT paying them for what they need to do, let alone add-ons like that. With all the additional training burdens placed on our Guard and Reserve Soldiers (Suicide, sexual harassment, IT security just to name a few) we are already using 120%-plus of available time before we get to tactical training, maintenance or administration.
We are telling these guys already to go home and use their family time to do their on-line training, but we won’t pay for it. And it gets worse every time the idea-fairy drops another shiny object anywhere near the pentagon or Guard Bureau.
TV, movie standards and video games need an overhaul, adults at schools should be armed, and mentally ill people should be safely off the streets, into institutions where warranted. All recent mass killings involving guns were involving mentally ill persons, or Islamist terrorists. But I repeat myself.
I doubt we could get that implemented, but if we could, I like your plan better than mine.
The only solution that will have any effect at all is to fortify schools and other soft targets, PWK.
Your idea is great, but it does not go far enough. We need more than several in each school.
I’d say a team armed and visible at all times backed up by plain clothes running electronic security and carrying concealed.
They need to be there all day, every day for the rest of time.
Now is the time for such security companies to form, and they should not be union, because unions will strike leaving the schools exposed to attack.
Furthermore, schools need to change their architecture. They need to be physically harder. Doors need to be solid steel and locked down except when classes are changing.
Front doors need to be locked down as well as all exits and entrances. Fences need to be erected around the property and those fences need to be secured and guarded at all times.
May sound extreme, but it’s not as extreme as a bunch of dead kids and vulture politicians trying to consume civil liberties as a result.

Study your history. Massacres have occurred throughout American history. Some data suggest they reached their peak in the 1920's. Government can't solve this any more than it can stop people taking drugs.
My daughter is about to graduate with a degree in elementary education. For obvious reasons she has been following the events in CT with great interest. She positively LOVED this picture!

I would’ve let him on the campus as he was the son of a teacher, and I’d have KNOWN him. I’d probably have seen him on campus many times.
That would be fine except that most teachers are liberals and would refuse. The whole mindset needs to be addressed. Guns are tools, for good and evil. Right now, they consider them evil in every aspect. Until that changes, then we will continue to see the gun control rants and no viable solutions.
This troubled young man intended to suicide and wanted to take as many easy targets as possible with him. A school is the ultimate candy store to someone in that state. If he has known there was a possibility that someone was armed, well, he may have chosen differently, or, there may have been a different outcome.
OR! Retired police/military AND PARENTS, who are trained...to walk the campus.

Absolutely agree. Holywood and particularly the video gaming industry need to be examined and REAL research done on the desensitizing effect of video gaming by young men. I believe the schools should institute an armed teacher program, similar to the airlines’ armed pilot program, which teaches not only firearms use but also hand-to-hand techniques to overpower attackers. There should be arms-qualified teachers in each school and weapons on the school property, readily available. On a personal level, we all need to learn how to protect ourselves and our families, starting with concealed carry. Teach your wives and children to be aware of where they are at all times; to be alert for abnormal behavior; to constantly scan for places to hide and escape. And, yes, I totally agree with locking up the mentally ill. Their families will thank you, believe me.
Allowing armed big government resulted in TSA, IRRC. All they are good for is stealing luggage, groping/molesting passengers, ‘inspecting grandma’s soiled Depends, ad nauseam.

If you "trade" rights for security you get neither.
Maybe you can explain what caused mass killings before video games. There were a lot of them over the centuries.
The only armed guard arrangement that would work is to station an armed man in bullet proof cupola ABOVE the main ~ and ONLY entrance ~ just like liquor stores do it.

The military patrolling our schools is the last thing on earth we need. Perhaps after the total collapse of civil authority in the future, your suggestion might be warranted.
