Good question. I just pet him on the head and shoulders.
But then, there is also a Lab in with him so I am going to get doggie slobbers on me no matter what!

“Btw, if you ever need to get a pit to let go and dont have a gun, you can pick it straight up by the tail. Trust me it works.”
Another option is to pummel the offending canide into submission. While it was a violent spectacle, the customers on my route have kept their dogs penned, or chained while I delivered their mail, since. As a plus, I’m shown more deference...in this day and age, that is a good thing.

I half-expect to see a Victor Davis Hanson article about this incident. He lives in Selma, IIRC.

I have Boas.
Feeding them is boring.
Open door, toss thawed rat in.
Close door.
Snake pokes head of hide, picks up and swallows rat.
Did you have some hard core herps there?
;D

My daughter ended up with a half pit bull half boxer. My boxer has played with many pit/boxer mixes at our local dog park. Boxers are people lovers, so it turns out to be a good mix. To punish a boxer, you ignore it. Boxers turn out fine if they aren't left alone for long periods.
I once took my boxer for a walk, and had a really large pit bull get loose. He wanted to play with my smaller boxer. It was friendly, but it was so muscular it good have wiped us off the map in a matter of minutes. It was like having a tiger want to play with us.

and the pit added some wonderful szauce to the lab.

Its really frightful what some horrible people have done to the Pit breed and its reputation.Haven't pit bulls been bred for aggression - meaning the friendly ones are culled and the aggressive ones kept for breeding with other aggressive dogs? I don't think any amount of training can overcome a genetic predisposition to be aggressive

Odd, who would have thought that pit bulls; bred to fight in rings for entertainment, might possibly be violent?
Exactly. I have tried to say this to my Dau/Son-in-Law who are involeved in dog rescue and sometimes take on a pit.
I remind them that when my daughter was growing up we had two dogs. First we had a Border Collie - then we had a Sheltie (Shetland sheepdog). We got them both as very young puppies and niether received any training during their lives outside of not to poop on the carpet.
Both were major "herders" right out of the box. The Border Collie got a bit too big for our yard and I gave him to a friend who had a ranch in Colorado - it instantly became an excellent cattle dog without requiring any real training by the new owner.
I've told the kids that they have to be very careful with a rescue pit - and the example I use is our previous dogs. I say to them "just imagine trying to teach Bandit or Chelsea NOT to go into herding mode when they see a bunch of kids playing in the yard - it would be impossible". Those dogs' inbred insticts simply overcome the training.
I don't know if the inbred fighting/aggressiveness instinct is as strong in a pitbull as the herding instinct in a Sheltie....but I certainly wouldn't want to risk death or serious injury to find out.

That’s one of the really bad things the low lifes, like Michale Vick, hkave done to pits. Having a wonderful dog who’s half Pit and all love and silliness has given me an entirely different take on the breed and a real loathing for the “people” who abuse it and the individual dogs.
To: Salamander
Say hi to Bob for me since I can’t shake his hand. :)
To: Redcitizen
I told him what you said and said he said "Booo! Hisssss!"
LOL!
[oh, that was *so* bad it was good] ;D
