NFL Tiebreaker Status (update after week 15, vanity)
December 16, 2012

Posted on 12/16/2012 8:21:13 PM PST by campaignPete R-CT

AFC

for a bye:

Hous has head-to-head over DEN, giving them stronghold on #1 seed and bye NE has head-to-head OVER HOUS and DEN

MI has tiebreaker over CIN/PT, still kickin' with an 8-8 finish. Their 6-6 conf record will give them tiebreaker. NYJ has tiebreaker over CIN, IND, but not PT. They have a shot at 9-7, but eliminated at 8-8.

cin/pt uncommon games is 1=1, so common games will be tied. Winner of head-to-head in week 16 clinches tiebreaker.

BALT-CINN-PITT all went 1-1 in uncommon, so common amoungst the 3 is clinched to be a tie and therefore no longer a factor in any divisional tiebreaker.

BALT is playing for seeding in the wildcard round. They have clinched tiebreaker over CINN (div record) and clinched tiebreaker over PITT (conf record)

TIEBREAKERS FOR INDY, if:

PT 9-7

CIN 9-7

IND 9-7

CONFERENCE WILL BE 6-6 FOR ALL 3 TEAMS

IND VS. CIN, BOTH 3-2 COMMON GAMES

IND VS. PIT, BOTH 3-2 COMMON GAMES

therefore, the IND tiebreaker goes to SOV (strength of victory) with both teams. [note, the NYJ at 9-7 would be 7-5 conf and therefore sweep in, in a 3-way tie, or head to head vs. INDY)

SOV current:

PITT 60 wins (at 9-7)

CIN 46 wins (at 9-7)

INDY 48 wins (at 9-7)

INDY could be out of playoffs at 9-7. Of course, they play @ KC next week. And they have a slight lead over CIN in SOV. (Jets are "on the march", too. Sort of.)

NFC

bye: GB has tiebreaker over ATL (conf record)

Giants are in bad shape within the division, but have tiebreakers vs MN and CHI (conf record)

if DAL beats WASH final week, creating a tie and a tie DIV record ... DAL vs WASH common games:

DAL uncommon is 0-2 (SEA CHI) WASH uncommon is 1-1 (STL MINN) therefore DAL has clinched common over WASH

NYG is 2-0 uncommon, so DAL & WASH have common games over NYG NYG have no tiebreakers vs either DAL or WASH, they are in deep dire straits.

MN has clinched common games over CHI. Therefore has clinched tiebreaker over CHI. CHI cannot have better DIV rec if the 2 teams tie.

(head to head is split.) but MN has much tougher schedule.

NYG & WASH tiebreakers over the other 3 wildcarders {MN CHI SEA) in CONF record here is NFC head-to-head:

........... NYG DAL WASH CHI MN SEA

NYG ......X ...... X ...... X ... X ..... X ... X

DAL ,,,,, X,,. X ..... wa ... CHI ... X ... SEA

WASH ... X .. .. wa ... X .... X .... WASH ... X

CHI .... X .. CHI ...... X .... X ... X ... SEA

MN .... X .. X ....... WA .... X ... X ... SEA

SEA ..... X ,, SEA .... X ... SEA ... SEA X

example: SEA beat DAL CHI MN, did not play the other 3

there is still a game outstanding WA vs. DAL which is why 'wa' is lower case.

harpu, livin' 5 miles from JerryWorld (also known as 'Jerry's last erection'), says the Cowgirls won't play in an NFC Championship game as long as Jarrett and Romo are leading the team.

harpu also says; the 'girls won't play in a SuperBowl until Jerry turns the GM keys over to someone who knows football.

it looks like the Cowpokes could be hosting SEATTLE in the playoffs. Will it be a blow out? 58-0 or 50-10?

This is a 2-way tiebreaker grid for NFC. Y=Yes so NYG has tibreakers over CHI MN SEA (due to c=conference record)
The grid in the main article is only head to head victories.

........... NYG DAL WASH CHI MN SEA

NYG ......- ...... - ........... - ...... Yc ..... Yc ... Yc

DAL ,,,,, Yd,,. - .......... ? ........ - ....... ? ... -

WASH ... Yd .. .. ? ... - ....... Yc .... Yhc ... Yc

CHI .... - ...... Yh ...... - .... - ... - ... -

MN .... - ....... ? ....... - ........... Ydg ... - ... -

SEA ..... - ,,... Yh .... - ........... Yh ..... Yh ... -

example: MN might end up with the tiebreaker over DAL (?). They have tiebreaker over CHI (d=div g=common games)

The winner of DAL vs WASH game gets the tiebreaker between the two.

WA & SEA are strong in tiebreakers. CHI is weak.

WA has strong tiebreakers, see grid in #25.

At 9-7 (victory over DAL), likely division winner.

at 9-7 (victory over PHIL), possible wildcard winner. Tiebreakers over NYG MN CHI (even SEA)

at 8-8, still hope for WA, but will CHI lose 2 games? No.

Thanks but I don’t think the BEARS will need a tie breaker. I hope they lose their next two and slink out of the playoffs completely.

The coaches all have to go. Lovie stands there on the sideline with the headset on but it’s not connected to anything at all. All he hears is the blood rushing to his feet. So stupid, he tries to call for the end of the game pizza and just mutters “NO Anchovies, no anchovies” over and over again...

Cutler sucks worse than ever.

Spring Training opens in a couple of months. GO CUBBIES!!

here are the playoff tiebreaker procedures:
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?page=tiebreakers

note: in the PT-BA-CIN 3-way tie ... even tho BA and PT would be 4-2 division, PT would have 3-1 record in head-to-head among the 3 teams and gets the division. BA has tiebreaker vs PT and CIN in a 2-way tie with either.

these look like good scenarios for the coming week:

Ah here’s the football thread.

Yeah.

My woeful Bears need MN to lose 1 (they have the Texans and Packers) and NYGs too (Ravens, Eagles) or else the Skins (Eagles, Cowboys) so the Giants win the east. If the Giants win out they are assured at least the last WC.

San Fran is my SB pick.

Jets pathetic, LOL. The worse punt I’ve ever seen that wasn’t blocked set them up on the 25 of TN and the Sanchize fumbles the snap. Time for Rex Ryan to put out resumes?

And to proclaim Sanchez even worse than Tebow?

San Fran is my SB pick.

They didn't play like a contender in the second half against the Pats.

Well they did in the first.

Brady being Brady I guess.

Who do you like, Atlanta? Houston?

I don't really see a superior contender. Every contender has looked terrible at times. Injuries to key personnel have been a factor and could be more so in the playoffs. I'm very interested in the SF vs Seattle game this week. Denver has played a weak schedule. Green Bay destroyed Houston at home. The Giants haven't looked like a SB team. Atlanta is good and lucky as well. The Pats are always dangerous with Brady playing. Which team will have a hot QB and an intact defense going in and can remain relatively injury free will be my pick.

I forgot Denver. I think they will win the AFC.

AFC: Either NE or Denver, period. HOU is a paper tiger. PIT has too many injuries. BAL is sucking at the wrong time. IND or CIN? Not this year, although Andrew Luck is fun to watch play.

NFC: My boys (SF) looked damn good beating the Pats. GB is peaking at the right time. ATL is another paper tiger. MIN/DAL/NYG - same as IND/CIN above.

But my real wildcards for the NFC are: WAS and SEA. I could see either one upsetting either SF or GB and going to the SB.

Should be a good round of playoffs all around. Too bad the games have become the filler in-between the commercials.

And please, NO Ed Hochuli!!!

I agree about Seattle. Granted they raped bad teams the last 2 weeks but still impressive.

They also showed they could win a close road game by pwning the Bears.

“I agree about Seattle.”

Yep! Should be a great game this Sunday night: SF vs. SEA.

My Ravens are too beat up. They may not win another game this year. Final record will be 9-8 or 10-7 if they win one of the last two games. I look for a SF vs NE Super Bowl.

“My Ravens are too beat up.”

Yes. Them and the Steelers beat the sh*t out of each other too often.

“I look for a SF vs NE Super Bowl.”

Hmmm...I think in a rematch in their stadium, DEN can beat NE.

NFC: The winner of this Sunday night’s game will in all likelihood go to the Superbowl. GB being the other possibility along with WAS.

Basically, this is down to six teams IMHO.

COWBOYS UPDATE!!!

if cowboys beat Redskins, at 9-7:
Cowboys have tiebreaker over WASH (split head-to-head, div is tied at 4-2, Cowboys win common games)

So at 9-7, Cowboys win division. Unless NYG finishes 10-6. Therefore,

NYG 10-6
DAL 9-7
WASH 9-7

MINN 9-7
CHI 9-7

MN gets tiebreaker over CHI (div rec and/or common games)
Minn and DAL get 2nd place, so it is MINN vs DAL:
both would have conf rec of 6-6
both have common games rec of 1-4, so it goes to Strength of Victory:

MN leads DAL in SOV 55-53 going into today week 16, update to follow below.

MN leads DAL in SOV 55-53 going into today week 16, update below:

9 TEAMS DAL Would have beat are
3-4-2 today with NYG and CLEVE still playing

9 TEAMS MINN Would have beat are
2-6-1 today with SF still playing

so DAL HAS GAINED A GAME, THUS FAR. PANTHERS AND ATL came thru for them! I will review these numbers later for accuracy.
