CLERMONT, Fla. -

Authorities say an 8-year-old girl caught on camera stealing a package off the doorstep of her Clermont neighbor's home has prompted an investigation into a string of thefts.

When residents on Briar Run Drive noticed the missing packages, Tim Lebede told Local 6 he put a camera in his office window and another neighbor put decoy packages on their front porch to catch the culprit.

The video shows a child taking the boxes off the doorstep. Nobody would ever question a little girl walking around the neighborhood with packages in her hand," said Lebede.

Jessia Araujo runs a small business from her home and says she constantly receives packages for her online store. She said since September, she has had packages with more than $1,000 worth of merchandise vanish.

That’s what I’m thinking too. A lot of crooks get kids to do their legwork knowing that the consequences are minimal. Around here a kid under the age of 12 can’t be prosecuted.

Long story short, my neighbor’s young teenager was stealing our mail. Most of the stuff we got back from his closet. The upset mother wanted me to call the police on him. I told her where I come from we don’t call the police on our neighbors children. Later, the boy and his father (divorced) came, apologized and thanked us. Turned out the father was a police detective!

Some years later my bonehead wife got in trouble with the law and I contacted the father. The case went from criminal to family services the next day. I was amazed and relieved. Everything is settled now. I thanked God.

My Grandfather never believed in calling police regarding family or neighbor differences. He looked at it as a betrayal to do so.

There's actually a word for that. It's not new. Fagin did it in Charles Dicken's 'Oliver Twist'.

I agree with you. You don't call the police in a situation like this, unless your neighbors have a dog you want shot.

Fill a box with bedbugs and roaches and rats, have it delivered, and take delight when the neighbor kid takes it. They’ll get the message.

Jessia Araujo doesn't have tracking numbers on her packages?

After about the second package showed as delivered and it was not on my door step I would be taking steps.

So, did the girl’s parent(s) question where the stolen items were coming from?
