Jack Reacher Movie Reviews
Multiple | December 21, 2012

Posted on 12/21/2012 11:41:44 AM PST by EveningStar

The previous Jack Reacher threads are quite informative and can be found by clicking on the jackreacher keyword.

For those of you who are new to this discussion, 5'7" Tom Cruise used his influence to land the role to play author Lee Child's 6'5" anti-hero, Jack Reacher (Cruise is also a producer). Lee Child is OK with this. He says Cruise is a great actor and Reacher's size is a metaphor for an unstoppable force. Whatever.

I've watched the trailers and I don't see Jack Reacher, I see Tom Cruise.

Keep in mind that the majority of the people who will see this movie have never read or probably even heard of the books.

Anyway, the movie, based on the novel One Shot, goes into general release today. The reviews are coming in and they are mixed.

I think of an Adam Baldwin type when I think of Jack Reacher.

At 6'4" isn't he too tall to play Reacher :^)

Remember this post by you?

Also, which is the book where Reacher learns that deserting soldiers are being smuggled out of the US into Canada and is totally sympathetic with it?

If I’m remembering correctly, I think that’s also Nothing to Lose.

Saw the movie.

Tom cruise has a tremendous on screen presence and simply carries the movie on his back, a very good movie and well directed.

The casting is perfect, you need someone with the ability of Tom cruise for this to succeed, simply casting someone like Dwayne rock or any massive guy would not be enough.

Careful now, you’re going to disrupt the whole Tom Cruise Sucks meme. What do you know about it anyway? You only went and saw the movie. Don’t upset those who opine without seeing it first.

Good point.

Don’t understand the blind hatred towards Tom Cruise in this site, as an actor Tom Cruise has delivered consistently some terrific performances in his career.

In this movie, Tom Cruise on screen presence is simply brilliant and makes a huge difference. Complaining that he is not 6.5 inches tall or not being massive is nonsense, what matter is the ability to deliver the character on screen and Tom cruise does it well

An another interesting point is the good guys eventually who take out the bad guys in this movie are gun owners and gun enthusiasts. So this goes against the typical Liberal argument of hating the 2nd amendment supporters.

I read One Shot last week, and with Cruises’ picture on the front, Reacher kept sliding from my mind and I was picturing a little, creepy shithead twisting bad guys heads off their shoulders and it wasn’t working. Is Cruise even big enough to be a gate guard in the MP’s?

Too bad it was fabulous. I too have read all the books. There are a few awkward parts but overall I give it 4++ stars.

After seeing it I think Tom Cruise read the books too. The stunts are great, no CGI I could detect.

I just don’t think I could stand it especially now that they’ve removed the opening shooting scene.

I certainly don’t hate Cruise, blindly or otherwise. In fact, I think he’s a truly fine actor.

It’s just that after reading the books, I had an image of Jack Reacher in my head and it wasn’t Tom Cruise. That didn’t change even after watching the trailers.

I guess I’ll just have to see the movie. ;)

Yes it is a good idea to see the movie to review it.

To translate a book into a movie reaching an audience of many millions more is not a easy thing but I think the movie has done a good job.

Amen to that.
The best I could come up with was David Bowie at 35, ... with good teeth ... and a top notch wardrobe guy ... and ... well you get the idea.

There was another good book titled “Point Of Impact” about a former Vietnam sniper. The movie titled “Shooter” was an unimaginable mess.

Yeah they ruined that one too. I generally like Mark Wahlberg but he was all wrong as Bob Lee and then they also made it all about oil. As the book's author Stephen Hunter said, it was ruined by TULWC*.

*: The Usual Left-Wing Crap....

BTW, Stephen hunter is a conservative...

I like Hunter’s books but not that one where these Russians took over a missile site in the US. Totally not plausible.

Wow. Old thread. I’ll say it again: Tom Cruise is no Reacher!
